Vehicle Detail
What muscle car is more iconic than a '65 GTO convertible? Bright red, top down, wind in your face—tell us there's a better way to spend a summer day! And if you are a fan of the “best of the best”, AACA National First Place badges, the original drive train and full documentation make this a GTO a heck of a nice car and a true blue chip investment grade muscle car. By the original build sheet from the Baltimore plant, this GTO was assembled on May 12, 1965, and by its original window sticker was delivered to Reedman Pontiac in Bristol, PA. Of course, option 382 is the most important as it turned a standard Tempest Lemans into the GTO. You'll see it's code R1 Montero red over a white convertible top with a code 216B red Morrokide bucket seat interior. The original YS code 3.36 axle is out back. Code 501 and 502 (5N on the build sheet) "wonder touch" power steering and brakes are in place to make the drive effortless. Code 462 deluxe wheel discs are history in favor of Pontiac rally wheels with new US Royal 7.75x14 bias ply redline tires. The original window sticker and build sheet are amazing to find, but the capper has to be the original Protect-O-Plate. It's still on the original warranty booklet (next to the original owner's manual and convertible top instructions) and it verifies the engine and transmission are correct and original to the car. You can't prove the drive train is correct without it! Start underneath with the incredibly detailed chassis. New, crisp and clean everything is the theme here. Fuel flows from the new tank through new lines to the awaiting engine while brake fluid pushed through the new master cylinder by the new power brake booster runs through new lines and hoses to new wheel cylinders, shoes, drums and hardware. The frame itself was blasted and powder coated chassis black while the floor pans are sprayed in Montero Red to match the top. Of course, all new steering and suspension components, new body mounts and new hardware are in place. Correct spiral shocks are at their posts while a new exhaust system takes care of spent gasses. There are enough miles on the car to prove its roadworthiness without detracting from the visuals! We have before and after restoration photos, and that's not unusual. What IS unusual is that this was a shiny, running and driving car before it was taken apart! We're used to seeing pictures of basket cases, run down beaters and generally forgotten cars turned into show pieces, but taking apart a driver quality car to rebuild it shows the dedication and pickiness of the owner. Stripped of its paint you can see that very little work was needed to get the outer body of this super solid car into the condition you see, and that the floor pans were absolutely mint. The frame was separated off and the body was massaged into the straight, flat and gorgeous condition it's in right now. Panel fit is excellent, the chrome trim, bezels, emblems and bright work on this GTO are either expertly restored or excellent reproductions, and the chrome shines beautifully. You could sit and stare at the car for hours, and we couldn't blame you! When you sit inside this GTO, you're looking at how the original owner saw it when he took delivery in June of 1965. Perfect red seats, gorgeous gauges, new carpeting and clean trim greet your eyes and take you to another time. New door handles and window cranks and new pedal dress up pieces work with the chrome trim on the console and dash for an impressive sight. The wood grain steering wheel matches the wood grain dash while red door panels, carpeting, floor mats and trim invite you in. Someone at Pontiac spent quite a while thinking about the interior in these cars! The engine bay is exactly how it should be. Brilliant chrome on the air cleaner and valve covers highlights the high quality blue paint job on the engine while the correct semi gloss black panels frame it perfectly. Reproduction hoses carry coolant to the re-cored radiator while date coded spark plug wires light the fires. A reproduction Delco battery in the corner connects up with reproduction cables. Tower hose clamps hold everything together while the new power booster and master cylinder haul everything to a stop. Of course, there's plenty of smooth, big block power on tap to go along with the visuals—don't think this is some one trick pony! Since the restoration on this incredible car was completed, this GTO has won a number of awards, including an AACA Senior National First Place award in 2007. With that endorsement of its condition, paperwork to prove its authenticity and the GTOs proven track record of increasing in value, this desirable example is a car you can't pass up!
