Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a beautiful 1969 Lincoln Contential If you’ve been watching the market lately, you know that the “suicide door” Lincoln Continental sedans are great collectibles. For years, they lived in the shadow of their drop-top siblings, but they have recently found a very enthusiastic following of their own. And why shouldn’t they? They’re stylish, comfortable, and full of all the luxury features that we expect from today’s cars. In 1969, when you wanted to tell the world you had arrived, THIS is what you drove. This particular triple black 1969 Continental is recently out of long-time ownership, and actually spent most of its life being chauffeur-driven. Originally cream with a black top and black leather, it was given a bare-metal repaint in 2008 when its second owner purchased it from the original owner’s family. There were a few patches in the quarters and rocker panels, but they are all but invisible today, and nothing suits these cars better than high-gloss black. There must have been considerable disassembly involved in getting into all the hard-to-reach areas like the door jambs and trunk, and the trim was surely removed because there are no masking lines anywhere on the car. Only the engine bay gives away the original color, but as a low-mileage car, there was no need to completely disassemble the engine bay, and they wisely chose not to give it a quick mask-and-spray job that wouldn’t have looked right anyway. Today you can’t go anywhere in this car without getting thumbs-up, waves, and questions about it—almost everyone recognizes it as something special. Inside, the black leather interior is the height of ‘60s cool. Everything is 100% original and beautifully preserved, with a feel that new or restored cars just can’t match. There are no rips or tears in the leather, and the seats merely show what many people call “comfort marks” which is appropriate—these seats are all day comfortable. The rear seat is almost flawless, and the carpets are well preserved thanks to a set of rubber floor mats since the beginning. Everything is power assisted, including the windows, locks, and front seat, and it all works. In 1969, a stereo radio in your car was a very big deal, and this one includes fader and balance controls in a separate housing on the transmission tunnel. The automatic climate control was recently serviced, and the car just effortlessly glides along in almost complete silence at highway speeds. Mechanically, this car is ready to travel cross-country. The 460 cubic inch V8 makes 365 horsepower and a massive 500 pounds of torque, enough to move this 5200-pound sedan with real authority. It runs beautifully, thanks to a new intake manifold and Holley 4-barrel carburetor, which have been stashed under the original air cleaner, so nobody will ever be the wiser. New belts, plugs, hoses, a fresh radiator, a rebuilt master cylinder, and a new true dual exhaust system were installed last year—all things that you’d expect to replace on a car that spent a lot of time sitting in a previous life. Other work includes a rebuilt front end with new ball joints and tie rods, and four new shock absorbers deliver the kind of luxury ride you’d expect from a car of this caliber. Finally, it rolls on a set of beautiful and correct 235/75/15 Firestone dual white stripe radials that are less than 2000 miles old. Documentation is extensive, thanks to meticulous record keeping by that original owner. We have the factory window sticker, owner’s manual, warranty booklet, AM/FM radio operating manual, and a booklet called “Helpful Hints for a Safer Ride” from Ford. We also have receipts for all of the recent work and titles dating back to the original owner’s family, which authenticate the mileage claims. These Continentals were some of the last true hand-crafted luxury cars. In the years that followed, Lincolns became simply dressed-up Fords, and their unique personality was lost in the name of profit. From behind the wheel this car feels impressive, and more importantly, you’ll feel like a million bucks driving it. “Hemmings Classic Car” magazine recently named the 1960-1969 Lincoln Continental as one of the top future collectibles, and it seems that the market is starting to catch on. Values are only going up on these as a younger generation discovers them thanks to appearances in their favorite movies, TV shows, and music videos. This handsome, well-sorted triple black Continental is a sentimental favorite, and for all the right reasons. Call today!
