Vehicle Detail

Sometimes you get a car that’s just too good to be true. With all the emphasis on survivors lately, it seems that a lot more nice, original, unmolested cars are out there than we thought, and more and more of them are coming onto the market. This two-owner 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T is from the collection of a long-time Mopar fan, and it remains in virtually untouched, original condition throughout. Even more amazing is the stack of rare options it carries, including factory A/C and that incredibly cool “Gator Grain” vinyl roof. First off, Burnt Orange is a very unusual color today. In 1970, it was the height of fashion, but in the intervening years, many of them have been repainted red or black or even Hemi Orange to suit the tastes of new owners. This car sports all of its original sheetmetal and there are no panel replacements or patches anywhere on the body. Much of the paint is original, although the sides have been repainted in single-stage paint to precisely match the original paint. The work is so good, you’ll never be able to detect the break line and it looks 100% authentic with a soft gloss that truly looks 41 years old. The remaining paint, including the hood and deck lid, is original and suggests that this car has been treated very well since it came home from North Star Dodge on March 9, 1970. The chrome and stainless are likewise original, and not reproduction or re-chromed pieces, including the unique “loop bumpers” up front. The R/T badges and those fake (but very cool) scoops on the quarter panels are the same ones the guys on the assembly put there 41 years ago. The white bumblebee stripe out back was a cool addition to the Burnt Orange paint, but nothing can compare to that Gator Grain top. It was a fun, unusual option even in 1970, and finding a car that not only has the option, but also still carries its original top is truly astounding. Look carefully at it and you can see that it is definitely authentic, with no fading or damage, again, indicative of a car that has spent its entire life safely indoors during inclement weather. The matching Burnt Orange interior is every bit as unusual as the paint, and just as well preserved. Heading up the list of cool options is the factory A/C, which remains fully functional and complete. This car also includes the A04 Radio Group, which included the Music Master AM radio, power steering, a left-hand remote control mirror, and deluxe wheel covers. There’s a console for the shifter, and Rallye gauges give you a complete view of the engine’s operation and are all in working condition. Overhead, the original headliner is taut and wrinkle-free, and the original carpets have obviously been protected from wear by floor mats for most of their life. But this Coronet isn’t just about incredible originality and unusual options; at its heart, it’s still a performance car. With a 440 cubic inch Super Commando V8 under the hood topped by a 4-barrel carburetor, it cranks out a very stout 375 horsepower. Never disassembled or damaged, this is the original, matching-numbers engine that still runs like new today. The block and heads are still bathed in Hemi Orange paint, the air cleaner still has that unique wrinkle finish, and all the accessories are fully functional. It has been properly serviced over the years, but remains highly accurate and correct and would undoubtedly score very well in a preservation class, even at the national level. The transmission is the original 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic, and like the engine, has never been out of the car. The chassis is clean and tidy, and every bit as nice as you’d expect from a 47,000-mile original piece. It isn’t so clean that you need to show it off with mirrors, but it is an astounding time capsule that will provide an invaluable road map for restorers in the future. And again, the truly amazing thing is that it retains so much of its original equipment, including the gas tank and even the bright red brake drums! The exhaust looks almost too good to be original, but if it was replaced, it was done using factory pieces, and as a result it gives the 440 a nice, baritone growl. Wheels are optional W23 Road Wheels with bright trim rings and it wears a set of original-spec Goodyear Polyglas tires. Backing up this car’s incredible authenticity is the original window sticker, bill of sale, and receipt for payment—a whopping $2750.69 in 1970 dollars. The window sticker shows the following options: WS23 Dodge Coronet R/T A01 Light Group A04 Radio Group A62 Rallye Instrument Cluster C16 Console D34 TorqueFlite transmission D91 Sure Grip limited slip E86 440 cubic inch V8, 4-barrel carburetor G11 Tinted glass—all H51 Air conditioning V1G Vinyl roof—Gator Grain V6W White bumblebee stripe W23 Road wheels with chrome trim rings Most experts agree that the hobby is moving in a new direction, away from perfect restorations (and re-restorations) towards preserving highly original cars like this Coronet R/T. These cars are less about achieving factory perfection and more about preserving factory authenticity, which is a subtle but important distinction. Not only do cars like this represent something that is an artifact of history, but they provide a road map for others to follow, and for that they are invaluable. This car needs nothing to be competitive, and an industrious owner could probably spend a few weekends cleaning and detailing it for competition while simultaneously raising its value.
