Vehicle Detail

Normal 0 I am selling a 1990 Porsche Carrera 2 964, commonly referred to as a 911. The car is one of very few configured as a “Targa”; all the pleasures of a convertible but with a stiffer frame due to the “hoop”/roll bar configuration. This car is VERY clean. If you were to just go by appearances, it looks more like a 3 year old car than a 21 year old one. Car still has that Porsche smell and the classic lines of an air-cooled German monster. Car is well detailed below and I will include all the documentation I have. Note: all recent service performed by an ASE Certified and Virginia State Licensed Automotive Technology Teacher. I am also the Chief Instructor for a local Corvette Club and feel capable of making statements regarding the street/track worthiness of this vehicle. This is a 21-year old car, and is in amazing shape for its age and mileage. If you are looking for a flawless new GT3, this is probably not the car for you. If you love the heritage of these cars, this is a fantastic example at the height of their prowess. Background on the car: I believe the current owner is the 3rd to own the car, Carfax will verify this. The car has been lovingly driven and serviced over its lifetime. This is evidenced from the moment you see it. The current owner traded an exotic 60’s Italian roadster project car for this one in 2003 and set out to make this car stand out. 18 inch staggered fitment wheels, RS big cross-drilled brakes, new interior parts, motor service (motor removed for valve adjustments, new exhaust, new valve covers, new gaskets, etc), strut brace, adjustable Bilsteins with Eibach coils (a second set of performance springs and original valve covers are also included), stainless steel brake lines and a host of other high-dollar toys (Challenge Cup adjustable sway bars for example) were added. The car saw a few thousand miles until 2007 when it really wasn’t driven much. I inquired about it and began servicing the car, including completely draining all fluids (gas, oil, brake and clutch fluid) and bringing it back to its glory. This car is an absolute pleasure to drive and stunning to look at. Car just passed VA state Safety Inspection (April 2011). Exterior: Original Black high-gloss finish. This is a well-preserved finish, not a cheap repaint for sale. Recently detailed, this body SHINES like you would not believe. There are a few flaws in it, as it does show some use in its 21 years. The fenders and doors are dent-free, with only minimal scuffs around the door handles and small chips on the mirrors. Front end does shine but shows some wear from mileage (these cars are notorious for stone chips/sandblasting because of the low nose). It has one scratch on the lower plastic trim in front of the passenger side wheel. All in all I would give the paint a 7.5 out of 10. For being 21 year-old original, I would give it a 9.5. Hoop or Targa/roll bar has been re-sprayed matte black. Not perfect but very nice. Top folds nicely and is in good shape except for one small blemish over the passenger side. SSR GT-3 18-in aluminum 2-piece rims set this car out from the pack on a set of almost-new Yokohama AVS tires. Staggered fitment means a wide stance in the rear with good turning abilities up front. Included with the car is another set of chrome Porsche wheels and tires (one rim has some curb rash). One set of wheels for street and the other for weekend autocrossing? Weather stripping is in very good shape with no tears or appreciable wear. All of it still shines black and is not dry-rotted. As you may know, Porsche seals are expensive; these are in good shape and will serve for many more years. Rear wing works well, in good shape also. Interior: Carpets have been very well kept. Black floor mats cover the original tan ones, which are in excellent shape. Dash and door pads are all tear free and in good shape. Door handles and locks have been fit with aluminum pulls, which REALLY make the car. The original plastic ones are included but I cannot fathom you would want to put them back on the car! Shifter shows some wear around the top but no tears or deep marks. Gauges all work and the VDO clock keeps decent time. Alpine CD head unit powers a Blaupunkt amp under the passenger side seat. Boston Acoustic separate speakers in the doors let you turn it up and cruise. The rear speakers are not super clear sounding, probably the originals and could use to be upgraded. Seat leathers look new and have very little wear. I would not be surprised if they were replaced by the previous owner. All new window switches make sure you cruise with the windows down in style. Door panels are all clean of scratches and scuffs, door carpets are in excellent stain-free condition and fit nicely on the doors. Pedal box is clean and does not show signs of abuse in any way. All switches and controls operate as they should (save the oil level gauge, described below). Engine: Oil change just performed. Conical air filter replaces the original air box. Distributor vent modification has been performed (preserves the drive belt on these dual distributor 3.6L motors), updated trunk release cable, new fan shroud surround (Pelican parts, including receipts for all new parts). Motor is clean, inside and out. A/C just charged (held pressure while sitting, just needed a top-off of R134; has been converted) and blows about as cold as a Porsche A/C can (read as “still not that great”). Drive belts are in good condition, as are all the seals, spark plug wires, harnesses, etc. The engine was serviced out of the vehicle within the last 5000 miles (several years back). The service replaced gaskets (these motors ALL leak oil when they sit, bimetal components all expand at different rates…it is an air-cooled motor after all), adjusted valves and replaced valve covers. I cannot tell you for sure but the motor feels strong enough that it may have been rebuilt internally as well. Porsche motors are extremely durable and even after 100K miles it is not uncommon to see hone marks still in the inside of the piston bores. These are well built cars; certainly explains their expense when they were new. Computer has been “chipped” and comes with the original PROM chips so you can pass emissions inspection in your respective state. The computer is under the seat and you can swap it without too much difficulty. Aftermarket exhaust sounds great but I could not tell you which brand. Air exchangers are all stainless steel and look like new, definitely not stock. Bonnet: Carpet looks new. Strut tower brace maximizes the handling of this already-amazing car. Fresh ATE Super Blue fluid for clutch and brakes as well as a brand new battery (warranty papers included). New hood struts to keep it open, as well as original spare and tool kit/tire inflator. Spare tire has never been used. New wiper blades (I highly doubt this will be a rainy-day car for most people) just in case… Driveline: Big brakes and 4 piston calipers have been fitted to the car. It has cross drilled rotors and almost new brake pads at all four wheels. Stainless steel braided brake lines give you an absolutely amazing braking capability. Driver side driveshaft was removed, both CV joints serviced and new CV boots installed this month. Things the car needs to be PERFECT: As mentioned before, the rear speakers are probably original and do not sound as good as they should. I would think replacement of these 4X6 speakers would be a good weekend project for the new owner. Easy to swap, covers just pop on and off. The car has a flaky sending unit on the oil level gauge. This is a gauge in the engine compartment that tells the driver how much oil is in the engine. This motor uses a dry sump system as well as a 12 quart capacity tank/cooler. As you drive the gauge fluctuates; it is my understanding the senders go bad and this sort of erratic behavior is the result. It could easily be that driving the car more will clear this up. The “trunk open” indicator light stays on in the VDO clock. I have cleaned and adjusted both boot and bonnet switches but it still indicates one is open. The rear compartment does not have a bulb, that could be the issue? I have also had the battery connected for several weeks and there is no “parasitic drain” or weird electrical issue, just something to tinker with. Emergency brake could use adjusting. Holds at the top but some people like it to hold right off of the resting position. Up to the new owner to tighten the cable. Extra Parts: Full extra set of Porsche wheels and tires. These 17 inch wheels are take-offs of another car. Tires are in great shape on these as well. Keep and use or resell to pay for other goodies… Extra wheel badge inserts, new in box. Car cover (non Porsche brand) included. 964 front and back license plate frames (aluminum, laser-etched name and number). Use Buy it Now and I will include a brand new in box Porsche Bra for the car (never used, never even unfolded!). Various catalogs, receipts and records as I can find them. If you make sure I have your address, anything found after the sale will be forwarded on as well. The car is available for viewing/test rides/drives with payment in hand in Alexandria, VA. Delivery locally is a possibility, as is shipping at your expense. Payment in full would of course be required prior to shipping or delivery. Title is clear and all parts (there are several bags of odds/ends as well as extra springs and valve covers) convey with ownership. Payments can be in cash, cashiers checks/bank checks or Paypal if you pay the fees associated with that. $500 deposit due at the end of auction, full payment within 5 days. Please know I have done my VERY best to describe this vehicle to the best of my abilities. I am a car guy and my reputation on ebay and in the automotive community means more to me than a quick buck. This is a solid, sound car that I considered purchasing for a daily driver. I honestly need more space than this car can provide, hence my helping sell it. I have a 100% feedback rating for a reason and I intend to keep it. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer it. I will do my best to help a new owner make this happen (I sold a Corvette on ebay about 7 years ago and even picked the new owner up at the airport!). Best to you and good luck! On May-19-11 at 18:45:49 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE: I have uploaded a number of pictures to a Photobucket account. My user name on there is 1990_9641 if the address below does not show up. I have had a GREAT deal of interest in this car and know that its new owner will be VERY happy. http://s1219.photobucket.com/home/1990_9641 Service history back until 1998 has been located, as well as the original airbox, filter and muffler. All of these parts will be included with the sale. Thanks so much for the interest.
