Studebaker had been nurturing a sporting image for a few years when the Avanti sport coupe burst upon the scene in 1963. Its radical design by a team led by Raymond Loewy featured a wedge-shaped profile and a grille-less nose that drew radiator cooling air from under the bumper. Studebaker successfully applied its experience with centrifugal superchargers to boost the power of its 289 cubic inch V-8 ( 280 hp ) and these few unusual cars built only as 63 and 64 models have become highly prized by collectors. This 1963 Studebaker Avanti is finished in red with black & white vinyl upholstery. In addition to being supercharged with the 289 hp R2 package it has the Twin Traction limited slip differential automatic transmission AM-FM radio power steering power brakes chrome engine dressup and seatbelts. Importantly it is mostly original a sound and very usable Avanti that has never needed a complete restoration. This car was purchased from the original owner ( do not have documentation, owner died and puchased from wife who said they purchased it brand new ). The current owner purchased in 2005 with 73,422 and it currently has 82,486 original mileage. While this is not a showpiece it is a very nice car that shows good care and attention throughout its life. It needs nothing to be a rewarding car to display or drive. Fewer than 5000 Avantis were built by Studebaker and not many of them are still in such largely original and presentable condition as this. I have seen many of these for sale ranging from $20,000 to $38,500 on Hemmings. The reserve is considerable less since the owner has retired and needs to reduce his collection of classsic cars. I have included many pics and as you can see it is a nice original car with and extreemly clean ( Hog Troughs ) undercarriage.
