Vehicle Detail

~~oo00oo~~ Please note: The VIN shown in the listing header is NOT the correct VIN as the eBay system cannot/does not automatically accept gray-market VINs. The correct and true VIN of this car is: WDB1070461A009472. ~~oo00oo~~ Mercedes 500 SL 1984 Full European specification! This is a full on European specification 500 SL finished in black with cream leather interior. These gray-market 500SLs were a huge improvement over the local 380 SLs with some 20% more horse-power. With even more power than the 560SLs sold in the US in later years. Wikipedia: "The more powerful 500 SL with 5.0 liter engine, produced from 1980–1989, was not available in the US through Mercedes-Benz and was popular in "gray-market" import before the arrival of the 560 SL (only made for the USA, Japanese and Australian market) in 1986-1989. Despite the larger 5.6 liter engine of the 560 SL, the 500 SL is recorded as being the fastest production 107 produced (mostly because of the lack of emission restraints) The 500 SL was published by Mercedes-Benz as having 0-60 mph times of 7.4 seconds for a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph). Torque for the 500 SL is 296 lb·ft (401 N·m) at 3200 rpm and for the 560 SL 287 lb·ft (389 N·m) at 3500 rpm." These Euro cars look noticeably different to the US spec SLs as they have the slim-line integrated bumpers and the correct factory design European headlights. Not the ridiculously protruding rubber bumpers and ugly 4 round headlights designed for the North American market which look like after-market add-ons. The car also has a factory fitted rear spoiler on the deck-lid which was a common fitment to the 500SL. The body on this SL is straight and the paint shiny. It is consistent all-over and presents very well. The car was imported into Arizona and then spent much of its life in California so the car is clean as a whistle underneath with no rust at all. There are some small scratches just aft the convertible top cover – it looks like someone scratched the car whilst removing/installing the hard-top. It is not objectionable. The interior of the car is excellent. Finished in light cream, the seats, door panels, carpets are excellent. The original dash does have some cracks in it – which is rather common on these SLs - but they are limited to the centre section to the right of the instrument cluster. The wood is original and in excellent condition. The interior presents beautifully with new leather to the front seats. These were done by a Mercedes Benz upholstery specialist in factory specification leather. The steering wheel is excellent without the heavy wear normally seen and clearly in a condition conducive of a low mileage example. The driver's sunvisor would look better replaced as it has "lost its shape" but otherwise the interior is quite stunning. Mechanically the car is generally very good. A well maintained car by 2 enthusiasts for the last 15 years it drives tight and firm. None of the silly “rattles” and “looseness” quite normally experienced with SLs. This one is great – with the roof off, you can drive it down the roughest of roads and it feels nice and tight. It brakes true and sure and accelerates strong and hard. Exhaust is good (relatively new rear muffler) and the tyres sport good tread. The wheels are the polished Benz alloys and not the more common chrome-plated version so they look quite smart. The soft top is in good condition and the original hard top in black and tan interior lining is included and also in good condition. All the lights, signals, and interior illumination work as they should. This SL makes for an excellent summer driver. Please understand, although a high rated “driver” car, it would not be the purists idea of concours quality. Having said that, one could achieve that if desired. I love driving any of these SLs during the summer months and in the recent warm weather I have been overwhelmed by the compliments. But, nothing is quite as fun as the 500SL which has power to burn! Unfortunately, this one has to go to make way for a big restoration project I have in mind. ** Please note: This is a “nice weather daily driver” so mileage may vary at time of sale. The photos of this car say it all so take the time to have a look at the photo link below. If you have high speed internet, I highly recommend you use the “slideshow” feature. Click HERE to see additional photos! ~~oo00oo~~ This Mercedes Benz is part of a private collection. I am not a broker or retail car dealer; I am a professional car collector of some 30 years with considerable experience and knowledge of British and European Cars. I have a long standing reputation being associated with Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor cars which I take seriously. I take a lot of pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them. However, auctions are not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid or make an offer and I openly welcome any potential buyer to come and personally inspect the car. Once you bid or make an offer, you are doing so to buy WITHOUT conditions. A $2000.00 deposit (non-refundable) is required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal. The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire. I cannot accept PayPal for the balance unless you are willing to meet the cost of transfer fees. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. All payments are non-refundable. Payments as described above form an important part of this purchase contract and so, if all the funds are not received as outlined above, I reserve the right to terminate the transaction without notice. If there has been any deposit or other part payments received and I elect to terminate the contract, I reserve the right to keep any such deposits or payments and resell the vehicle to another bidder or interested party or re-list the vehicle at any time. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a national and worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost. As a collector and experienced restorer of classic cars, I make every effort to bring my cars to a very high standard. Unless specifically stated, the car is not of show standard but of good quality "driver" condition. Please understand, the very nature of these classics is such that it is not always possible to attend to every single item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked an item. Please note, fitted radio/stereo systems are usually subject to upgrade by purchasers so I do not ensure operation of these. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 33 years old. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition: The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is" with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment and accuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible for errors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle. Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end. Also, you must remember that this is a classic +/-27 year old vehicle, and while it is up to you, I do not recommend that you just “hop in and drive it across the country”. At least, I have never done that. I have always professionally transported the cars in enclosed carriers from where I bought them to my home. PLEASE; IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ABIDE BY THESE TERMS, DO NOT BID AS, RESPECTFULLY, THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS. ~~oo00oo~~
