Vehicle Detail
In 1969, the Nova was still a strong seller for Chevrolet, combining a compact size with the Camaro’s chassis design that allowed a wider variety of engines and an updated suspension. For most buyers, the Nova was a standard, everyday driver, but for a lucky few who selected the SS package, they got a potent sleeper that handled as well as a small block Camaro, for less money. To many muscle car fans, that’s a lot of upside on a car that always had humble origins. This 1969 Nova SS is an exceptionally low-mile, matching numbers piece. Packing the 300 horsepower L48 350 V8, it’s an outstanding performer designed to embarrass many more powerful machines, and to do it quietly. Despite the bright red paint, this Q-ship has the ability to run with some seriously fast hardware without advertising its presence with stripes, badges, and other obvious come-ons. The car was restored in 1995, and its condition today, as well as the amazingly low mileage, is a testament to how carefully maintained it has been ever since. That’s 100% original sheetmetal, beautifully straightened and finished by some expert body men, because it’s radiant in person. No Nova ever fit together this precisely, and the quality of the Viper Red paint (this car was originally Garnet Red, so it’s pretty close) is worlds better than the 1969 stuff. The only tipoffs that this is an SS are the blacked-out panel between the taillights and small SS badges up front on the fenders; otherwise, this car would be easy to ignore on the street, which is exactly how Nova SS owners liked it. Adding a bit of dress-up to the car are a black vinyl top and matching rub strips, beautifully chromed bumpers, and all the Nova trim, including the “gills” on the front fenders, have been restored. Inside, the black Strato bucket seats are a welcome upgrade over the stock Nova bench. While perhaps not as stylish as the Camaro’s low-slung cockpit, it’s bright, comfortable place to be, with great visibility and comfortable bucket seats. And yes, the interior is 100% original in this car, with no major component replacements—impressive, isn’t it? The shifter for the automatic is on the floor between the seats as it should be, and the beautifully preserved dashboard and gauge cluster easily match the quality of the rest of the car. The carpets show very little wear at all, and the headliner remains taut with no sagging or loose areas. New weather stripping was installed when the car was painted, so it seals up tightly. The trunk also remains in original condition, with no signs of water damage or rust, as well as a full-sized spare and jack assembly. Power for the base SS was a 350 cubic inch V8, but not just a garden-variety 350. The Nova SS received a 4-bolt main block, a revised cam (which added 5 horsepower to the 1968 figures), and several other improvements that made it suitable for use in a high-performance application. The engine bay is tidy and clean, and this is the original, numbers-matching L48. Clearly the engine was removed and detailed during the restoration, but efforts were made to preserve original features. It runs beautifully, and the lighter weight of the small block V8 gives the Nova impressive weight distribution and handling and making it a true weapon on the street. Imagine having this much performance at your disposal in 1969! Underneath, the chassis is solid and clean, with satin black paint as original. A recent exhaust system includes the original style transverse muffler and gives the Nova a subtle performance sound, which only helps its stealth capabilities. The transmission is a TH350 3-speed automatic feeding a 12-bolt full of highway-friendly 3.08 gears on a Posi limited slip. Power front disc and rear drum brakes were part of the SS package, and stop the lightweight car extremely well. Wheels are great looking Rallys wearing modern white letter radials for a performance look and a big improvement in ride and handling over the original bias ply hoops. With the prices on 1969 Camaros spiraling ever higher, enthusiasts are rightly turning to some more budget-friendly alternatives. This 1969 Nova SS delivers all the performance of a Camaro with the added bonus of a usable back seat and stealthy looks that surely caught more than a few big name muscle cars asleep at the wheel. This car is also heavily documented, including the original build sheet, so you know that it is an authentic SS. With low mileage and a highly original interior, as well as top-notch restoration work where needed, this is a car that needs nothing to hit the streets today. Call now!
