Vehicle Detail
Theodore and Vivian special ordered and purchased this 348-V8 Chevrolet Impala brand new in California in 1960. Upon retiring, they moved here to Oregon in the early 1970's. They last registered the car in 1979. The 64,509 miles are 100% correct and actual. In fact, since they moved to Oregon, the car has traveled less than 5000 miles and only 200 miles in the last 30 years. The original owners passed away in 1980 and 1981. I'm 43 years old and I've known this Impala since I was just a kid. The father of a good friend of mine purchased the car from the Estate after the original owners passing. Even though the original paint was still presentable, he had the car painted in it's factory color of Ermine White shortly after purchasing. New wide white wall tires were installed and a standard service was performed. Since then, she has sat undisturbed in the same garage for the last 30 years. Just a few months ago, I personally removed the car cover and pushed her outside to a waiting flat-bed tow truck. I'm sure she would have started right up with fuel and a new battery but I had her taken to the well respected vintage car mechanic I use and trust that maintains my collection. Due to the cars long hibernation I had the fuel system drained and cleaned, carburetor rebuilt, battery upgraded, belts & hoses replaced, brakes gone over as needed, oil changed and a comprehensive tune-up completed. The original owners had all service work done at Chevrolet dealerships and it shows. First in California, then at Knauss Chevrolet in Tigard Oregon. This cars survivor status is incredible. The term "Survivor" is thrown around a little too freely in the collector car arena. Other than mechanical service items, one nice repaint and the replacing of the carpet (both done 30 years ago) the car has remained completely original. No aftermarket or restored trinkets of any kind. A garaged existence since day-one, quality care and a lifetime spent in a wonderful climate have kept the car in the beautiful condition it's in. More than deserving of the label "real survivor". I am passionate about my collection and especially attracted to local and original survivors. I still own cars from my high school years in the 1980's. They can only be original once and this is an outstanding example. Even the little things like chrome knobs, buttons and switches are still gorgeous on this car. She tells her 51 year story very well. They are never found like this anymore. If I said nothing more you'd be able to form a clear opinion of the car after the first few photos. To those that prefer a more detailed description, here it is: The car is rust-free in all areas and ALWAYS has been. To me, rust-free means NEVER any rust. Even the undersides and trunk are gorgeous. The paint and body are very nice. Body panel fit, gaps and alignment are excellent. Sighting down the sides of the car is impressive. She's extremely straight with no waviness or washboard effect. Even looking down the long quarter panels is also impressive. Both doors, hood and trunk lid open and close easily. The one correct color repaint was applied 30 years ago. A good job was performed at that time and the paint holds a very high shine. There are no chips or scratches to mention. Any blemish is minor and only visible under close scrutiny. The car shows and presnts itself extremely well. The bumpers are original and in wonderful shape. All original brightwork, moldings and stainless trim are gorgeous! There is no pitting on any of these items. The original trim pieces are outstanding and never seen in this condition. The entire grille area is exceptional. All light bezels, lenses and emblems are excellent. The special odered factory option EZ Eye tinted glass is all beautiful. Every glass panel is crystal clear. Again, there are no aftermarket or reproduction items on this car. The condition of the original components on the car are nothing short of amazing. Compliments were overwhelming on the few occasions I've taken her out in public. She more than deserves every one of them. It's almost as if time has stood still for this car. There is no exception for living in a mild climate and being garaged every night since new. Simply a beautiful car from every angle. The interior needs no written description. It is entirely original and one of the finest you'll see. Seats, door panels, rear side panels, headliner and even the rear window package tray are original. The original carpet was slightly worn near the entry edges from feet sliding in and out and replaced in 1981. Remember, the original owners were in their mid-fifties when the car was purchased new. The houndstooth black and white seat inserts are beautiful. They aren't soiled at all. The white in the checker pattern is still bright. The factory padded dash is MINT. Absolutely no sunlight damage. Even the California sun passed this car by. All gauge lenses are crystal clear. Every knob and switch looks almost like they've never been touched. All lights, gauges, heater, wipers, horn, etc, function properly. Yes, the factory air-conditioning is cold. And yes, the original AM radio tunes stations and plays perfectly. Even the dome light and glovebox light work. The gentle use and wonderful condition of the interior is obvious the second you open the door. The drivetrain is 100% original and numbers matching. The guys at GM are the last to touch the mounting bolts for the engine and transmission. At 64,000 miles the 250HP 348-V8 with factory 4bbl is running smoothly and quietly. She starts easily and performs well. As mentioned above, I had a full service done including carburetor rebuild, all belts/hoses, tune-up, etc. The 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission shifts perfectly. The power steering and front suspension are tight and sound. The power brakes stop evenly and on a dime. She drives and handles just like a low mileage original should. The car doesn't even sqeak or rattle. Even with the 30 year old Remington bias ply tires she drives superbly. The tires have NOT developed any flat spots or age cracks while sitting dormant. Just another detail that supports the environment the car has always been in. 5 minutes behind the wheel will convince any non-believer of the cars true condition and the authenticity of the 64,509 original miles. I did not pinch pennies making her road worthy. She is ready to be driven and enjoyed without concern. That being said, I would not drive her cross-country. She has sat untouched almost all of her life and certainly for the better part of the last 40 years. I would recommend logging a few more miles before a 75mph road trip. Again, she's fully serviced and anything found needing maintenance was addressed. I'm just overly cautious and I baby my collection. She's a sweetheart. I will continue this description with brief comments under some of the upcoming photos. All of my eBay experiences have been enjoyable over the years as I've rotated through and sold members of my collection. I'm grateful for the kind remarks I've received. My opinions have served me well and I stand behind them but please keep in mind that these are my personal opinions and they may differ from your own. I welcome and encourage showing my Impala in person to anyone with genuine interest. My office in Downtown Portland and my home are both less than 20 minutes from the Portland Oregon Airport and I would gladly pick you up. There are over 100 pictures to view and I apologize if they start looking similar and you get dizzy scrolling through them. They are all different. It is my intention to make this as close to you seeing and touching the car for yourself as possible. Feel free to click on the "ask a question" link here in the auction and I will respond to all polite questions. Phone calls are great too. My number is 503-887-1231 and calls between 8AM and 9PM Pacific time are just fine. My auction runs for 7 days and is scheduled to end on Monday evening, the 21st of March at 7:30PM Pacific. I do reserve the right to end my auction early in the event I'm contacted and accept a genuine offer making the car no longer available. PLEASE, read my terms of sale located towards the bottom of this screen. I'm a kindhearted person but I will not bend on these basic terms unless previously discussed during the auction. A little communication goes a long way. NO RESERVE AUCTION I'm not sure if it's bravery or just faith in this car but I did not set a reserve price on my Impala. All that I ask in return is for your bids to be real and your intent to purchase be sincere. My offer of answering questions is genuine so please don't hesitate to contact me. I took every picture you're about to see with my hand-held Canon digital camera. No photo has been enhanced or altered in any way. Each photo was taken on Friday, March the 11th. I was listening to the events unfolding in Japan on the Impala's AM radio while driving. Regardless of religion or personal beliefs, we should all wish them the best. Thanks for your time, DAVE Me and the Impala driving across one of Portland's bridges the day I took these photos. This car is the exception to so many rules. She has escaped the fate that most others suffered. They just aren't find like this anymore. As I said, all body panels line up beautifully. Even the lower sections of the quarter panels are gorgeous. Impressively straight as you get on your knees and look down the sides. Every tailight lense and all of the brightwork is original. Again, all panel gaps are excellent. Please note: Many photos will look similar. I wanted to show the car from every possible angle and in all light conditions. If you look closely at this photo you'll see a tiny little ding in the center bar of the grille on the passenger side. It is the only small flaw in the entire grille area. All components are original. All glass is excellent, even the windshield. Being a California car, she was ordered with EZ-eye tinted glass. All chrome items, stainless trim, window and door moldings are gorgeous. Nothing better than dual rear antenna's. All 4 original T-3 headlights are in-place and working. When I said every light worked, I meant every light. Even the back-up lamps and license plate light. I'm sorry to sound like a broken record but I can't stress enough how amazing the original trim and moldings are on this car. You will not find nicer. The Air Conditioned sticker has been attached in the rear window since day-one! This is NOT a replacement sticker. Nothing on the car is reproduction. All factory tinted glass is crystal clear and every window rolls up and down freely. Your impressions and understanding of the car should be clear by now. I'm sorry for being so long-winded. The sad thing is that there's actually a lot more to tell. Just a short drive Downtown before going back home. It's these details that make the difference and separate this car from most of the others. Even the chrome frames on the side windows is in impressive condition. The car has never been exposed to harsh elements or bad weather conditions. Nothing needs to be said but you know by now I will any way. The interior is outstanding. Rubber and vinyl items are still soft. The factory padded dash is mint. These NEVER survive and remain in this condition. Door panels are 51 year old originals. The interior trim moldings and brightwork are beautiful. Not one wire has been altered, replaced or monkey'd with in any way. All wiring is original. All connections are dry and corrosion-free. Even the rubber sheeth that protects the wires is all still soft. In over 50 years, nothing has gotten brittle. This photo really sums up the interior. The entire dashboard shines like 1960. Original side panels. Yes, really. The seat trim never stays this nice. Although it's not absolutely perfect it's the nicest original anyone will find. Feet, packages, purses, etc, always hit this seat molding. This is gorgeous. The radio was on for this photo. You'll just need to believe me on this one. Notice the key toggle is in the on position. I was listening to sports radio. Go Trailblazers. As mentioned previously, the factory A/C is working just fine. A little history here. These car cleaning products were in the glovebox. I have no idea how old these cans are but each of them is at least half full. It wouldn't be right to remove them. They should stay another 40+ years. I'm leaving them right here. I think Theodore would have been a neat guy to know. Same goes for the 1960 California and 1964 Oregon Maps. They were here and I'm leaving them. I took this picture to remind myself to mention the door hardware. These window cranks and door handles always have pitting in the chrome. NOT on this car. This mat was new in the box when I opened the trunk. I don't know how old it is but it's been in the trunk at least 30 years. It is not a cheap reproduction. These items were also in a small box located in the trunk. I will leave them. This is the original trunk pan. No patches, no repairs. Original cardboard. The gutter area that holds the trunk weather seal is still like new. Many hours were spent cleaning and detailing the engine compartment. Don't get me wrong, it was already very nice but I wanted it even nicer. Again, the entire engine bay was already extremely nice. I simply brought it to the next level. Even this under-hood wiring at the heater/AC box has never been touched. It is 100% original and still appears new. Correct Rochester 4-JET carburetor still in place. Original engine block pad stampings located under the air conditioning bracket. Decodes correctly as 1960 Impala, 250hp, 348-V8 for powerglide transmission application. This undercarriage detailing was done 30 years ago. Nevertheless, the undercarriage was and is outstanding! Lightly undercoated when brand new and then detailed with black paint in 1981. Not touched since. As you can see, there isn't even a speck of dirt or roadgrime to be found. I did rub through the factory undercoat and black paint to see the original floors. No surprise, MINT! It could all be exposed and taken back to bare original with determination and elbow grease. Never any rust, no patch work. Transmission casting numbers. More transmission numbers. Back side of tail panel and rear bumper. Again, mint condition. True and correct mileage reading that reflects total miles traveled since 1960. NEVER disconnected, never tampered with. 64,509 miles. Maybe a few more before I say goodbye but not much. Factory trim tag located on cowl. Paint code 936A for Ermine White. Accessory line notes the air-conditioning and tinted glass. Terms of Sale: 51yr old vehicle being sold AS-IS: Please read and agree with the following: I have described my car honestly and to the best of my ability based on 25 years of owning and driving classic cars. I have 100% faith in the drivability of this car and to my knowledge everything is in excellent working order per my written description above. I have free and clear Oregon title in my possession. I would drive this car anywhere but she is over 50 years old and routine service and repairs should be expected. If you are not comfortable with a sight-unseen purchase, please come see the car for yourself or have an independent inspection performed PRIOR to bidding. I will not be responsible for the decisions of others. I would appreciate the winning bidder contacting me immediately upon end of auction just so the lines of communication are opened. My phone number is 503-887-1231. A $1000.00 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction ending preferably through PayPal just so we are both protected. Wire transfers and verifiable cashier checks are also acceptable. I'm an easy going person so if you need to make special financial arrangements just let me know BEFORE you bid and I'll try to help. I have been with the same bank here in Portland for over 8 years and the Management staff knows me. You are welcome to contact them for your own security if you like. Make sure if you are financing that your financial institution accepts the year and value of this vehicle before bidding. Please have your method of payment arranged prior to auction ending. TRANSPORT - SHIPPING I am happy to be an active and hands-on part of this process from start to finish but the buyer is ultimately responsible for pickup or shipping of this vehicle and any pre-purchase inspections need to be done BEFORE auction ending. If you wish to have it shipped using a service, I will gladly assist in loading and be present for the transport condition form and other reasonable help. Locating a transporter is the buyers responsibility but I can make recommendations and share the relationships I've built. Vehicle transport has become very reasonable. I personally use a privately owned trucking company. They are based here in Oregon and have handled my transport needs perfectly for the last 4 years with careful handling, excellent rates and fast service even all the way to the East Coast. Dependable Auto Shippers (D.A.S.) is a transporter that eBay recommends and my experiences with them were just fine. My location zip code is 97214. Coast-to-Coast enclosed transport is around $1500.00 and even less the closer you are to Oregon. Shipping to Australia, Europe and other Countries has also become affordable and easy to arrange. If you are outside of the United States or Canada, you MUST contact me BEFORE bidding. If you are an eBay member with negative history or have a (0) or low transaction score, I need to hear from you just to verify your sincerity and accept your bids as genuine. We all started from (0) and I'm happy to give a leg up. I reserve the right to cancel bids for these reasons. Communication is all I ask. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time if the vehicle is no longer available or otherwise SOLD .
