Vehicle Detail
1988 Mercedes Benz 420 SEL - W126 Very nice condition driver quality. Firm, strong and fine presenting example. This is a really nice looking and running 420 SEL finished in Diamond blue with navy blue leather interior. Being the long wheel base it is a very roomy car. It is a 2 owner example having spent half its life in Texas. The AutoCheck report is outstanding with a whopping 64 points out of a typical range of 21 to 43. This Benz presents very nicely with good paint and finish. It does have a few nicks here and there but overall the paint is shiny, consistent and deep in lustre. Please have a look at all the photos to see how well she presents and any of the little defects - they are all minor dings, marks, etc. The car has fitted a brand new set of Euro style headlamps which are a major improvement on the appearance of the car. I replaced the North American style lights because they were predominantly plastic which are cheap looking and were beginning to fade. The interior is virtually mint. The dark blue seats are in great condition with no tears, rips, cracking or drying of the leather. Often on these 126 models, the leather dries and shrinks and looks quite awful. There is none of this. The dash is perfect and 100% crack-free and the rear parcel shelf is not faded and all original. All the wood is in excellent condition without the typical lacquer cracking you normally see. It is virtually like new. Carpets and headlining are all good without any unsightly wear marks. The interior overall presents very beautifully and original. There is nothing to fault. Mechanically, she drives very well. Maintenance on her is up to date. Timing chain and tensioner were done at 100,000 as required. She runs very good with a smooth engine. At idle you have to pay close attention to determine she is running (a lot of these older V8s can get lumpy and rough at idle). It has plenty of power and is responsive with no hesitation under acceleration. There are no oil leak and consumption issues. Valve stem seals have been replaced so when you start her up after sitting for long periods, the exhaust is clean without any signature puffs of blue smoke. All features and functions work; electric windows, seats, mirrors, gauges instruments, climate control etc. Heater is nice and hot. A/C has not been used since last summer so I cannot guarantee its operation but I am sure it will be ok. These Benzes had pretty trouble free systems. The trunk is clean with its original carpeting, spare, jack etc. Factory options fitted to this W126 model 420 SEL includes:- · 4.2 litre V8 · 4 speed automatic transmission · MB alloy wheels · Air Conditioning · Electric windows · Electric front seats · Electric mirrors · 2-way sun-roof · leather seats (all over - not just the seat facings) · Illuminated vanity mirrors The only after market option fitted is a the sound system which has a multi-stacker CD unit mounted in the trunk. This car has been a casual driver for me. It has always been garaged when not used. I recently purchased a W140 model so I have decided to sell her. She makes for a very affordable "luxury" driver that is reliable and safe. Fuel consumption is surprisingly good as a result of being a small V8. Overall presentation and condition is way above average for its year and I would rank it a strong 7+ out of 10. There are a couple minor outside rust spots above the rear bumper on the sides (see photo link) which are easy repairs. I spoke to my bodyshop which quoted approximately $350 for the repair. Not a big deal and I can arrange for you if interested. Remember - worth repeating - the AutoCheck report is an "off the charts" 64 points out of a typical range of 21 to 43 for this year. I am a professional car collector of some 30 years with considerable experience and knowledge of European cars and British classics. I take a lot of pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them (bit that this one was restored). However, when it comes to eBay auctions, it is not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid or make an offer. You are bidding and/or making offers to buy WITHOUT conditions. A $1000.00 deposit (non-refundable) will be required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal. The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire. I cannot accept PayPal for the balance unless you are willing to meet the cost of transfer fees. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. If all the funds are not received as indicated above, I reserve the right the keep the deposit and resell the vehicle by re-listing or to another bidder. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost. As a collector and experienced restorer of various classic cars, I make every effort to bring my cars to a very high standard but the very nature of these classics is such that it is not always possible to attend to every single item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked an item. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 22 years old. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition: The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is" with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment and accuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible for errors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle. Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end. PLEASE; IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ABIDE BY THESE TERMS, DO NOT BID. It will save us both a lot of aggravation. On Feb-13-11 at 08:34:22 PST, seller added the following information: **First unconditional offer rec'd TODAY above $3,000 wins! Will sell today - Sunday 13th February. Contact via eBay.**
