Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a very clean Original 1964 Mercury Monterey Commuter 9 Passenger Station Wagon with the "Z" Code 390-300hp engine and Automatic Transmission, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Tailgate Window and Cold Air Conditioning! This 1964 Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger is a very Original car and runs and drives like you'd expect from a 70,000 mile Mercury Wagon. These 1964 Mercury Wagons are fairly unusual and you rarely see a 9 Passenger Model as only 1839 Commuter 3 Seat/9 Passenger Wagon's were made for the 1964 model year. I cant imagine that there are many left after nearly 50 years and especially one in such nice original condition. This 1964 Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon is a nice get in and go turnkey car thats a whole lot of fun to drive. This car is nicely one of the cleaner original 1964 Mercury's that Ive seen over the years with beautiful original floor pans, nice original quarter panels...just a clean rust free car that was sold new in California where it would spend most of its life before coming East a few years back. This 1964 Mercury Wagon is a nice straight car with a typical California body which shows no evidence of rust or rust repair anywhere on the car. Its just a really clean original with nice straight body panels. The exterior looks nice and the car certainly turns heads everywhere you go. This is one of those cars that you can get in at anytime and turn the key and be on your way. Its equipped with its original 390-300hp "Z" Code 4 Barrel engine with factory dual exhaust and the Automatic Transmission. The engine starts and runs flawlessly with no noises or problems. The Transmission shifts very nice as well. This Mercury Wagon is a 9 Passenger Model with 3 Seats and the interior is in very nice condition throughout. The seats are all nice, headliners, door panels, carpets, cargo area are all nice and clean. The Dash Pad is very nice with no cracks or problems and the Dash Paint, Original Instrument Cluster bezel and all Dash Chrome is very nice. There are even Seat Belts up front and they look and operare perfectly! The Factory Air Conditioning is in great shape and blows nice and cold. All Lights and Signals work as they should. The Heater works well as do the Windshield Wipers. The Original AM Radio was sent out and professionally converted to AM-FM while retaining the original look. It works well and makes cruising a little more fun while listening to some good tunes. The Brake Lights, Head Lights, Turn Signals, Dash Lights and even the little bulbs in the Dash for each Accessory Light up as they should. The Dash even has a little Map Light that is mounted in the Dash just above the Radio and it works properly with its factory switch. The Headlights, Turn Signals, Interior Lights, Low and High Beam Headlights work as they should. The Tailgate Window works when you put the key into the lock on the Tailgate and turn to open or close and there is a Dash Mounted Tailgate Window Switch which seems to be the only thing thats not working at this time. I will try to get that working before the auction ends. Its just never been an issue since the window comes down as it should with the key so I never checked the switch. It may just need the contacts cleaned. The Horn works properly from the Steering wheel and the Turn Signals even cancel when the steering wheel returns after you make your turn. Its amazing just how clean the Dash and Instruments Cluster are in this near 50 year old Mercury Wagon. The Speedometer, Oil Pressure, Gas, Water Tamperature Gauges all work as they should which is another cool thing with this car as its a rarity that all original gauges work in these old cars. Its just a testament to how this car has been cared for over the years. The Glass in this Mercury Wagon is very clean throughout with no issues. All of the windows roll up and down nicely and the doors open and close very nice. This car still has an original set of Mercury keys which is very cool in my opinion. The Original Door Panels in this car are very clean in their Two-Tone Blue and the Seat Covers are clean as well with no problems. The Third seat could is unusual as they almost seem to be an afterthought by Ford. These 3rd seats are very interesting as they fold out of the rear cargo floor with the Original Cushions and Seat Covers held in place with snaps. Its pretty cool. I had a 1964 Galaxie Country Sedan 9 Passenger Wagon and it was the same with that car. Its just one of the interesting things that Ford/Mercury did with these full size Wagons. This Wagon has a very nice Headliner with clean original headliner bows and all original interior moldings appear to be clean. The Cargo are is nice and clean. The carpets are like new and fit great. I believe the carpets were replaced with the correct style reproduction replacement carpets....they look great and fit perfectly. There is also a nice full length Front Floor Mat that I installed to keep the carpets looking nice and clean and the Floor Mat is an NOS 60's Vintage piece and looks as though it could have been in this car since new. Its a real beauty. The exterior of the car is nice and clean. The car looks great and has wonderful eye appear with great body lines and those Oh So Cool 1964 Mercury Wagon Finned Quarter Panels which are pretty interesting in themselves. These quarter panels have factory extensions installed that give them the look of a finned quarter panel much like the earlier Mercury Wagons. I love the look of these cars and expecially those cool quarter fins! The Original Trim is all there with even the Original Fender Top Chrome Turn Signal Indicators still working. For those of you not familiar with these Fender Mounted Turn Signal Indicators, they are a 1964 only deal and the Fender top moldings have the Chrome Turn Signals nicely fit into the moldings which light up with a cool Amber color when you put a turn signal on. How cool is that? The Original Grill and Headlight Bezels are in nice shape and look great. The Rear Tailgate Trim is still quite nice for original. The Side Trim is 100% complete with absolutely nothing missing on the outside or the inside of this car. There are a couple of little dings on some of the moldings but nothing terrible...just little stuff from being driven. The Bumpers are original and are straight...still have a nice shine with a little patina after 47 years. The Original Roof Rack is in nice condition and is complete. It gives this car a very cool look....again it just adds to the cool look of this car with its wonderful lines and body style.....it has incredible character to say the least!!! The Tailgate Opens and Closes easily and the Original Flip-Open Lock on the Tailgate still shows nicely with its Original Laminated Mercury Head emblem...way cool stuff if you ask me! The Original Hubcaps are still on the car at all 4 corners and still look good. The car rides on Nice Whitewall Radial Tires which give the car that smooth ride while cruising down the Highway. This car floats down the Highway at 55 or 85mph for that matter and is an absolute pleasure to drive. The steering is nice and is power assisted and the same goes for the brakes, which work as they should and have a nice firm feel when you hit the brake pedal. The car is a true cruiser and as smooth as silk when your cruising down the highway. I love driving this Wagon. I have owned many cool Wagons but this is by far the smoothest Highway Cruiser. This old Mercury Wagon just does everything right and is not only a cool car to look at but an excellent driver that I would confidently driver anywhere! The Original 390 engine starts easily and runs perfectly with no noises, no smoke and no issues. The engine keeps good Oil Pressure and runs cool with absolutely no issues. The same goes for the Transmission. It shifts as good as could be with no noises, no slipping and no problems. It just shifts as it was intended by Ford with no problems. There are no mechanical issues with this 1964 Mercury Monterey Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon. The engine compartment is very original right down to the Original "390 Super Marauder" decals on the valve covers. This is a California car and therefor has the California Air Cleaner and Cleaner Package as you can see in the pictures. Its all Original under the hood. The only thing thats been added to the engine compartment is an Overflow bottle for the Radiator Coolant and thats about it. It is amazingly original and shows no modifications under the hood which is pretty amazing considering the age of this Mercury Wagon. I guess it just goes to show that with well kept original cars, you no need for changing things! The old Mercury Wagon does have a Rotunda Tow Hitch and a Transmission Cooler which is a fairly unusual option although you wouldnt think so since many Wagons were used for Towing. Im not sure what this Wagon towed when it was new but it definitely has the Original Ford Hitch and the Ball is marked "Rotunda".... pretty cool stuff!!! You will love the way this Mercury Wagon runs and drives and you'd be hard pressed to find a better original body. The car is painted in its Original Code "Y" Glacier Blue and it appears as though much of the paint is original...its attractive although it has some minor scratches and a couple of very minor dings. Nonetheless a very nice and more importantly a RUSTFREE Wagon!!! The Original Door Mounted Warranty Tag reads as follows: Body: 71C= 4 Door 9 Passenger Commuter Wagon Color: Y= Glacier Blue Paint Trim: 32= Medium Blue Metallic and Light Blue Metallic Vinyl Date: 13J = Scheduled Production Date of September 13, 1963 DSO: 53 = Oakland California Ordering District Axle: 1 = 3.00-1 Conventional Rear Axle Ratio Transmission: 4 = Multi-Drive Automatic Transmission The Vin Number is: 4Z72Z502182 4= 1964 Model Year Z= St Louis Missouri Assembly Plant 72= 4 Door 9 Passenger Commuter Wagon Z= 390 cubich inch 300 Horsepower 4 Barrel Carburetor Dual Exhaust 502182= St Louis Missouri Assembly Plant Sequential Build Number As you can see this 1964 Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger Station Wagon is everything that its supposed to be and has been well cared for over the last 47 years. This car was sold new at Joe Kerley Lincoln-Mercury in San Jose California back in the Fall of 1963 and spent many years out West before making its way to the East Coast several years ago. It was in the collection of a Diehard Ford/Mercury guy that I know and I purchased it from him. It has been garaged for years which is obvious by its nice original rust free condition. This is a car that you can enjoy and drive anywhere! Its an old Mercury Wagon with a beautiful Interior and if you know Station Wagons then you know that you can spend upwards of 10k just restoring an interior correctly. I have a friend who restored a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Wagon and he spent over $11,000 on the interior alone. Can you believe that? I know the car and the interior was a Tricolored Cloth and Vinyl Interior with gold speckled carpets and a very interesting headliner with little star shaped designs in the cloth... pretty amazing interior in an absolutely stunning Tripowered Wagon!!! That 60 Pontiac Wagon was beautiful and the restored interior really made the car but Im not sure I could deal with spending north of 10k on an interior alone. Thats not even an issue with this Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon as the interior doesnt need a thing to be enjoyed or shown just as she sits. It is very clean inside and comfortable to say the least with nice big seats that you can sink right into while your cruising down the road. Everything works as it should and the car has an outstanding original body. I dont know what else to say except that this is one nice old wagon and quite rare as only 1,839 were built. This one doesnt need anything except a new owner. Get in and enjoy. Please call Tony 215-499-2693 with any questions. The engine compartment could definitely use some detailing but its an otherwise clean car inside and out. This is a turnkey and enjoy car that needs nothing to be enjoyed now. I would drive this car anywhere! I reserve the right to end this auction at anytime and for any reason without notice. Please call me with any questions or concerns. This is a nice old car and I think the new owner will be very happy with this 1964 Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon. Please call me for a very detailed description. I can go over this car panel by panel to insure that you understand everything there is to know about this old Wagon. Its a darn good old car and you would look long and hard to find another 1964 Commuter Wagon with an undercarriage as clean and solid as this cars. They just are not out there! This one is clean in and out and underneath. On Jan-18-11 at 19:10:32 PST, seller added the following information: This 1964 Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon needs nothing to be enjoyed now. It is an excellent driver and is exceptionally reliable. It always starts easily and runs very well with no problems. Its just a good original car! The electrical components are in excellent working condition from the Heater/Defroster, Windshield Wipers, Horn, Radio, Headlights, Taillights, Brake Lights, Parking Lights, Parking Lights, Turn Signals, Interior Dome Light, Speedometer/Odometer, Temperature Gauge, Gas Gas, Oil Pressure Gauge, Amp Gauge, Cigarette Lighter, AC Blows Cold, Tailgate Window Operates properly with the Key in the Tailgate but the Dash Switch needs to be looked at. The Dash Lights work as you can see in one of the photos. The Doors open and close properly as does the Tailgate. The Doors still lock and unlock with the keys and all of the windows roll up and down nicely. The Interior is nice and clean throughout. The exterior is in good shape with a nice solid original body. The Trim is Original and is in good driver condition. This is a very respectable get in and go car that drives beautifully whether your driving around your neighborhood or cruising down the highway. Its an absolute pleasure to drive and you will enjoy cruising in this old Mercury Wagon. This is a car that would surely be welcome at your local Cruise Night gathering and you can pretty much bet the house that you'll have the only 1964 Mercury Commuter 9 Passenger Wagon at most any gathering. This is a Nice car and I think it would be tough to find a more solid original example. Its not a restored show car but rather a clean original driver thats had proper care and maintenance over the years.
