Rare! Rare! Rare! 1960 Devin D Roadster Porsche Drivetrain VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HISTORY: This Devin D, S/N DD 7-8, was originally sold in March 1960, and delivered to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to Devin sources, being only the 20th Devin “D” produced (of 49 total). It is believed the original owner raced this car in local hill climbs, gymkhanas and autocross events throughout Western Pennsylvania during the 1960s. In 1973 the current owner purchased S/N DD 7-8 from the original Pittsburgh purchaser. The car had been disassembled for a repaint, but never completed. Originally Silver from the Devin factory, it had also been painted Red, before being prepared for a repaint. It is unknown if this “D” was totally assembled at the Devin factory or one of the “kits” he sold. Most likely it was a kit (only requiring the engine/transaxle) as this one was done “Porsche” all the way, and comes with extra Porsche and VW parts. For the last 37 years this Devin D project has followed the current owner as his career moved him around the Midwest. Wherever he moved, there was always an enclosed storage location for his cherished Devin D. He had intentions of restoring it, but life got busy and he never got to it. He is ready to retire and it is time to liquidate some assets. It is time for a new caretaker to resurrect this rare Porsche powered special! MARQUE HISTORY: Bill Devin produced specials and fiberglass bodies in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Car and Driver magazine dubbed him “The Enzo Ferrari of Oakie Flats” because of his contribution to the sports car craze in America and his use of fiberglass to reduce cost (and weight) of the specials he built. Using many VW components in conjunction with a highly original, lightweight, and simply constructed frame, the Devin D became a reality. It could be ordered either as a $1,495 kit or a $2,950 completed car (with VW running gear). The kits were crated and shipped in an advanced stage of completion. The body was painted with a hand-rubbed acrylic lacquer finish and had everything installed – springs, wiring, switches, lights, pedals, doors, door latches, bumpers, upholstered seats, carpets, brake lines, fuel lines, top frame, top, side curtains. Its windshield was test-fitted and then removed for shipping. The purchaser received a list of drive train and mechanical components to buy and install, but any parts requiring modification from stock were included with the D kit. VEHICLE CONDITION: We do a complete 100 point mechanical and cosmetic inspection to each vehicle before listing it for sale. There are always items that do not show up in photos that need to be mentioned so the new owner has no surprises. You can bid with confidence knowing we have disclosed everything we have found wrong with the vehicle. Some people say I am too fussy, but we do the same type of inspection on vehicles we are purchasing for our Museum collection. I feel it is only fair the buyer knows everything that is not perfect with the vehicle. I feel so confident in our condition description that if you are not happy with the vehicle (or feel we have misrepresented it) when you come to pick it up we will refund your money. Once it leaves our property however, this refund offer is withdrawn. EXTERIOR: The car appears to have been painted silver when it left the factory, but was repainted red at some point in the 1960s. The previous owner removed the trim, gauges, and windshield, did a few repairs, and started to sand it down. There has been some patch repair to the nose, passenger door, and a few other little areas, but the rest of the car is remarkably free of major cracks or defects. A testament to the high quality of Devin fiberglass construction. INTERIOR: The original carpeting is still hanging on in a few places, and many pieces remain that could be used for a template. The original door opening pulls are still intact, and work to release the door latches. The original passenger grab bar is still mounted on the dash. There are some unknown holes in the dash for switches and/or lights, and a number of loose wires, switches, etc. under the dash that had been removed for painting. The body has the seat contour molded into it, but the seat have come up missing. The original rearview mirror (and mounting post) is still with the car. WINDSHIELD: The original windshield has a crack at the bottom of the passenger side, but could be used as a pattern for a replacement. The aluminum windshield frame is solid and intact with the original screws holding it to the body bracket, but will need polished. A rubber windshield gasket is included. The windshield is not installed, and is just sitting on the body. WEATHER EQUIPMENT: The original black vinyl convertible top is included, along with the top frame. All the snaps are in place. The rear window is cloudy and discolored. The snaps on the bodywork have been removed for paint. The vinyl side curtains are intact, but the widow material is discolored and cloudy. CHROME/TRIM: There is not much trim on a Devin D but what this one had when new is still there. The original three piece chrome rear bumper is solid, but rusting and pitted. The lower body stainless trim strips are there, but need redone. WHEELS/TIRES: The 4½X15 Porsche 356 wheels are all there including a spare, and are in good condition. The 165X15 tires are an assortment of old recaps, but they still hold air. GAUGES/INSTRUMENTS/CONTROLS: Included in the dash is an original Porsche speedometer showing 1,198 miles (likely not accurate). Also installed in the dash is a Porsche 356 combination oil temp / fuel gauge. There is a Porsche tachometer in the spare parts box that comes with the car. It is unknown whether any of the gauges work. There is a turn signal switch wired up and hanging from the steering wheel, condition unknown. DRIVE TRAIN: This Devin D has an all Porsche drivetrain. The engine is a 1959 Porsche 356 Type 616/1, 1600 Normal. The engine is free; it will start and run, but the carburetors are leaking and need rebuilt before any attempt to drive it is made. The gearbox is a Porsche 519 style w/close ratio Speedster gears. The original shift lever has been replaced with a “Hurst” unit. BRAKES: The brakes are all Porsche components including the aluminum drums. The master/slave cylinders are defective so the brake system has not been operated and the condition of the components is unknown. STEERING: The steering box and arms are Devin modified VW components. The uprights and kingpins are Porsche. The steering seems tight, but has not been operated to tell for sure. The wood rimmed Les Leston “Sterling Moss” engraved steering wheel needs cleaned up and refinished, but it is rare with its period Porsche center crest. ELECTRICAL: The condition of the electrical system is unknown, but the wiring harness and wiring appears intact. The ignition system is working as the engine fired up and ran for a short time once a jumper battery was installed. There is no battery installed in the car. LIGHTING: None of the lighting was inspected. The headlamp buckets, 5” sealed beam headlamps, chrome trim rings, front/rear light lenses, and all bulb sockets are there. UNDERNEATH: This Devin D is in remarkable good condition underneath for being 50 years old. There is surface rust, flaking undercoat, and dirt on most surfaces. But; there is no damage to any of the frame members. ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The deck lid opener handle has broken off and has been jury rigged to get access. The engine hasn’t been used for the last 37 years, but is relatively clean and tidy. After that long of sitting idle, corrosion can be found on most components. It appears everything is there to make this a fine running Porsche again. LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT: The parcel shelf for the luggage compartment is missing exposing the brake fluid reservoir, fuel tank, horns, and steering mechanism. OVERALL: This Devin D is in remarkably solid and complete condition for being 50 years old. It deserves to have, and would be a relatively easy restoration, as most everything is there. You will not have to spend a lot of time chasing parts and working with fabricators to bring this rare, Porsche powered sports car back to its original glory. Snook’s Dream Cars would be glad to tackle this restoration project for the new owner.
