I am the second owner of this bike and I have had it for about 7 years. Below is a precise history and description of the modifications made. There are even a few pictures of the build from back in the day. The Bike was ordered from MacDougal Honda in Charlotte, NC in 1975. The Original owner did All of the modifications on the bike except the spraying of the paint. The Bike was ridden daily from new until the mid eighties when it became a garage queen. The bike has never been left outdoors and has very little fading on instruments. There are very low miles on the engine since it was converted to the 970cc and the performance upgrades were added. The original Owner said this… “This motor is VERY strong for an old SOHC and I have no the bottom end is bullet proof . In the 70's I was the Crew for a Kawasaki drag bike, and was pretty good at building motors/chassis. I selected the best available stuff for this engine, and everything else on the bike. The motor was 836 for some yrs, but when the FJ1100's , CB1100F's, GSXR's and such came along, I needed more grunt to stay up with my buddies. I built the 970 in 1986 and ALL bearings were new: rods, mains, tranny. The next year, I went thru the top endwith fresh rings, O-ringed cyl, head/base gaskets, and baked motor in industrial oven so I could re-torque the cyl. studs prior to buttoning it up. Shortly thereafter, I moved, changed jobs, stopped riding on a regular basis and went about raising a family. Early 90's I put tag and insurance back on and rode it a bit, but all my old hotrod buddies were "dead or in prison" (just kidding), so I bought a BMW and started riding like an Old Guy. The motor has MTC's best forged pistons, also forged aluminum connecting rods. I cut NO corners on parts. To go 970cc, the stock liners are removed, the bare aluminum block bored, new liners installed, cylinder block decked, then bored for pistons. The top case half was also bored (not hogged out with a die grinder) so the big sleeved cylinders would fit like a glove. Of course the cylinder studs are the big chromoly ones, and I also put the big studs on main brg/case halves. My primary consideration when building this BIG motor was longevity/street rideabilty. On the 836 motor, I had to zing it to make run with the big bikes, but the 970 made so much power you can short shift it pulls like a freight train.” I received the bike with just over 3K miles on the big bore rebuild, and I have put roughly 1K on it in the last 7 years. It is an animal for sure and fairly noisy- there is no baffling in the 4-1. It is reasonable at lower rpm’s but when you rev it it really howls. The carbs are perfect- it starts, idles and accelerates beautifully. NO hiccups. I have changed nothing on the bike since owning it except for battery, oil, and plugs. The tires are old but in fine condition. It has NO TURN SIGNALS- the horn, sealed beam and instrumentation works. The petcock weeps a little fuel when turned off for long periods of time. The front brakes are strong and the rear brake is not working at the moment. It was sticky so I removed all the parts and cleaned them thoroughly and put them all back on could not get the MC to work right. I rarely rode the bike and when I did, the front brakes were fine so I never bothered fixing it. Too many other projects…. Which is why it is for sale. Baby on the way and I need to simplify my hobby. I WILL NOT SHIP THIS BIKE- PICKUP ONLY. IF ARRANGED BEFORE SALE I CAN DELIVER TO FORWARD AIR LOCATION FOR AIRMAIL DELIVERY TO THE USA. ALL ARRANGEMENT AND COST OF SHIPPING IS BUYERS RESPONSIBILTY.
