Vehicle Detail
Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 1970 Long Wheel Base (“LWB”) - formal limousine with factory glass division T his is an astonishingly original Silver Shadow Formal sedan that is finished in Velvet green (a color normally reserved for the Phantom series) with light tan (cream) interior. A very special order with beige Connolly hides in the front section and fawn "Julian cloth" in the rear. The waist-rail and hubcaps are finished with hand-painted gold fine-lines. Recently owned by a private classic car collector and British motoring enthusiast, this car was previously a 1 owner car from new. Ordered here in Chicago and used by a wealthy family for private chauffeur use until the passing of the head of the family. The car has an indisputable 37,000 miles and it is nothing short of stunning in appearance. It was used sparingly (obviously) and not in salty snowy conditions by the look of the underside. Many will know, the long wheel base is longer than the standard Silver Shadow sedan by an additional 4” length in the rear door. The “LWB” is easily identified by the unique smaller rear window. Rolls-Royce’s glass division option, however, was very rare and was generally reserved for heads of state and VIP purposes. Only some 12 cars were ever shipped to North America with only a few survivors, making it a very collectible example. Unique features include front and rear air conditioning units (2 separate units), front and rear heating and individual radios in both compartments. Each and all can be autonomously controlled. The electrically operated glass division can be activated by the driver via a switch at the dash and independently by rear passengers via a unique burl walnut finished control panel located at the middle of the Julian cloth upholstered partition. Below the panel are left and right side air-conditioning fan speed controls for rear-riding passengers. The rear compartment also has foot rests for each passenger. It is indeed an original example which makes it highly desirable to collectors and or meticulous classic car buyers. The photos accurately represent its “real-life” condition. It is not perfect in that it was a car that was used for its intended purpose up until a few years ago but it is a definite 9-out-of-10 driver car standard. As a collector of the Rolls-Royce marque, what is particularly impressive with this Shadow is its incredibly original state. It is clearly a car that is a genuine well-looked after example. With extraordinarily low miles, it has the original Rolls-Royce owner’s guide and operating manual. The body is very straight and the paint is very clean and consistent without any scratches or dents. It is deep in luster and very original in presentation. It appears to be mostly factory original which is unusual for a Rolls-Royce of this age. The fine lines are the original hand-painted in accordance with Rolls-Royce specifications. The car’s unique Velvet green color is a non-metallic green that is so dark that it appears black in most light conditions. Only under full sun does a hint of green exude. Special effort was taken with some of the photographs to capture this rare color. Please review the photo link where you can see the colour in different lighting conditions. (Please note, the country badges on the front of the car are "self-attached" and so can be easily removed without leaving any mounting holes. I left these on only because they were fitted many years when the car was almost new and so it keeps the car's "heritage"). Like all long wheel base sedans, it is fitted with an Everflex vinyl top. This one is the original black Eveflex top from new. It does have some slight imperfections showing on the rear pillars and at the top front above the windshield, but these are not only typical but minor. Interestingly, the car was ordered with "over-size" "C" pillar badges. These are the same as seen on the rear above the boot handle. These were specially factory ordered and not changed after delivery. A nice bold, but still elegant touch. Also an interesting piece of "tit-bit" is the outside door-locks for the rear doors. These were only on pre 1971 cars. The beige Connolly hide leather and Julian cloth contrasting interior is totally original and certainly unique. The combination of the two has been done with considerable elegance. For example, the Julian cloth rear compartment area tastefully incorporates matching beige Connolly hide leather for all the piping on the rear seats and doors. I am confident in declaring this to be the only one of this combination in North America making it a very special car. There are no cracks in the leather – not even the driver’s seat – only the natural creases - and it remains supple and true to its Connolly characteristics. The Julian cloth is clean and unmarked with no signs of even the smallest amount of wear. All the African burled walnut wood throughout is excellent with very few cracks or chips in the lacquer. These are mentioned out of "clear disclosure" and are not objectionable. In addition to the dash, console and doors, the burl walnut finish also continues across the rear partition for the division model. Carpets, internal finishes, glass, badging, and bright-work in and out are all in very fine condition. Under the hood is extremely tidy and clean as is the boot/trunk, both of which are entirely original. The original tool-kit is included. The car has been recently serviced including brakes and hydraulics – all heights are correct - and there are no outstanding matters requiring attention. Other than mechanical and operational feature inspections and maintenance, I have done absolutely no aesthetic or cosmetic work on the car whatsoever. It is entirely original and I believe the purist will best appreciate this fine example for its totally original state. Having said this, there are minor imperfections here and there but it important I reiterate, they are "minor". The car is fitted with early specification Michelin X tyres. They are 205-15 dimensions which date back some 20 years. They may well not be ideal long distance driving quality but they are a wonderful original touch for authenticity and certainly period correct! ~~ This highly collectable “VIP” Silver Shadow Long Wheel Base "Formal" limousine with factory glass division is beautifully presented, needs little to no work and is ready to be showed or simply enjoyed. Taking this car to true show standard would be a relatively easy exercise and a very worthwhile investment. ~~ Many additional photos are available at this link: Click HERE to see 100s of additional photos! International bidders always welcome! A note from RRMOTORSINC: “For those Rolls-Royce enthusiasts who have followed my auctions in the past I welcome you all. For those who are new to my adverts and/or the marque, please note that as a serious collector of some 25 years, all my cars are truly described examples. I have my own private Rolls-Royce workshop (not open to the public but dedicated to my own cars) with trained Rolls-Royce craftsmen who are proficient in all aspects. As a team, we are dedicated to the preservation of the marque and as such, any car that leaves the stable is completely inspected and work-shopped to ensure mechanical and operational items are maintained appropriately. We adopt a “keep it original” mentality with pride and confidence, offering after sales technical support and assistance well beyond the sale. Because most of my cars are offered for the pleasures of driving enjoyment it is not always possible or practical to seek perfection (in the true sense of the word) but we do always uphold excellence in whatever we do. Our cars are by no means cheap priced cars but we like to think they are amongst the best. To this end, I firmly believe in the famous adage; “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.” We hope you do to.” 1-off order beige Connolly hides in front with fawn "Julian" cloth in the rear. The glass partition can be controlled by the driver or rear passengers separately. Only the "Formal limousine" Rolls-Royce has 2 individual air-conditioning systems - 1 in front and 1 in the rear. Julian cloth to the rear passenger compartment is very soft & comfortable, yet durable. Click HERE to see 100s of additional photos! ~~oo00oo~~ This Rolls-Royce is part of my private collection. I am not a broker or retail car dealer; I am a professional car collector of some 25 years with considerable experience and knowledge of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars. I have a long standing reputation being associated with the marque which I take seriously. I take a lot of pride in my cars and have fun in collecting and restoring them. However, auctions are not a game so when you place a bid or offer, and you are the winning bidder, please understand you have entered a binding contract. You cannot bid and win the auction and expect not to meet the terms and conditions. Bidding and/or winning does not mean you are expecting me to “hold” the car until you have the opportunity to inspect it. Any inspection contemplated should be undertaken BEFORE you bid of make an offer. You are bidding and/or making offers to buy WITHOUT conditions. A $2000.00 deposit (non-refundable) will be required within 24 hours of the close of the auction and payable by PayPal. The balance of funds are required within 7 days of the close of the auction and must be provided by cashier’s check or bank wire. I cannot accept PayPal for the balance unless you are willing to meet the cost of transfer fees. Full payment must be made (and payments cleared) before the title and/or the vehicle is released. If all the funds are not received as indicated above, I reserve the right the keep the deposit and resell the vehicle by re-listing or to another bidder. I am happy to assist with shipping arrangements on a worldwide basis but the winning bidder takes full responsibility for pickup and/or shipping and at his cost. As a collector and experienced restorer of the marque, I make every effort to bring my cars to a very high standard but the very nature of these classic Rolls-Royces is such that it is not always possible to attend to every single item, or perhaps I may have inadvertently overlooked an item. Further, a feature or function that is working perfectly one moment, may decide to play-up the next. After all, it is some 43 years old. For this reason it is necessary for the following condition: The vehicle is being sold "as-is/where-is" with no warranty expressed, written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are made with reasonable judgment and all efforts are made to ensure fair assessment and accuracy but they are for descriptive and identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. The seller shall not be responsible for errors in description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, unforeseen imperfection, defect or damage. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have satisfied himself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgment solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects at the buyer’s request prior to the close of the auction. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle. Being a classic car in excess of 10 years of age, in most US states, the mileage may be recorded as “exempt”. In this regard the seller makes no warranties as to the accuracy of the mileage indicated or shown. I can hold the vehicle up to 30 days while you arrange shipping but you must immediately insure it. I will not bear any responsibility for any additional costs including storage, transportation, or repair after the close of the auction. Whereas I am happy to store the car in excess of 30 days from auction end, a cost of $35 per day shall apply beyond 30 days of auction end. Also, you must remember that this is a classic +/-43 year old vehicle, and while it is up to you, I do not recommend that you just “hop in and drive it across the country”. At least, I have never done that. I have always professionally transported the cars from where I bought them to my home. PLEASE; IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ABIDE BY THESE TERMS, DO NOT BID. ~~oo00oo~~ "RRMOTORSINC": Qualified & experienced in Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars world-wide for 28 years
