Vehicle Detail

Rare! Very Nice Original Condition Challenger Convertible! VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: OWNER HISTORY: The original owner purchased this 1971 Dodge Challenger convertible for his wife new, from Maumee Valley Dodge, Maumee, Ohio. She did not much care for it so it was hardly ever driven accounting for its remarkable “like-new” condition and very low miles. The current owner purchased it from the original owner’s estate in 2005 with only 24,630. He has kept it under wraps to preserve its original condition putting on less than 300 miles in the five years he has owned it. He recently completed a L.O.F. service and replaced the coolant. Everything is in like-new condition, and other than the old tires, it is ready to drive away! MARQUE HISTORY: The Dodge Challenger was introduced in 1970 as Dodge’s answer to the Mustang and Camaro. Challengers featured a low profile with a full-width, scoop-like grille opening. The sides bore the familiar “Coke-bottle” profile, with raised rear fenders tapering down at the taillights. The 1971 Dodge Challenger continued to use the same body as originally introduced in 1970 with very minor trim changes, namely a slightly revised grille and slightly revised taillight treatments. MORE PHOTOS: http://s759.photobucket.com/albums/xx239/SnooksDreamCars/1971%20Dodge%20Challenger%20383/?albumview=slideshow VEHICLE CONDITION: We do a complete 100 point mechanical and cosmetic inspection to each vehicle before listing it for sale. There are always items that do not show up in photos that need to be mentioned so the new owner has no surprises. A copy of this inspection is available by fax. You can bid with confidence knowing we have disclosed everything we have found wrong with the vehicle. Some people say I am too fussy, but we do the same type of inspection on vehicles we are purchasing for our Museum collection. I feel it is only fair the buyer knows everything that is not perfect with the vehicle. I feel so confident in our condition description that if you are not happy with the vehicle (or feel we have misrepresented it) when you come to pick it up we will refund your money. Once it leaves our property however, this refund offer is withdrawn. EXTERIOR: The Tan Metallic paint is nice and shiny. It looks great from 10 feet away. The bodywork and paint is original from the factory and is not perfect. There are some runs, orange peel, DA marks, and poor construction evident upon close inspection. There is filler in the rockers where the rear quarters join and on the top of the rear quarters behind the rear window corners. There is some waviness on the side panels, a few slight dents, and some touched up scratches/chips. We have been told by a knowledgeable Mopar enthusiast (he still owns his original 1970 Plymouth) that these paint/filler/fit issues were common in the era. INTERIOR: The Saddle Brown interior is in very nice condition, practically like brand new. The carpets have some slight wear. The driver seat bolster is puckered in one area (see photos). WINDOWS: All windows operate as expected. The glass is nice and clear with no scratches. CONVERTIBLE TOP: The Black convertible top is in very nice condition, no rips or tears. The rear glass window is just like new. The power top works perfectly. The top boot fits nicely and all the clips/snaps are intact. The passenger side plastic header bar top post locating bushing is cracked (see photo). CHROME/TRIM: The bumpers are in very nice condition, showing hardly any age, as are the outside mirrors, door handles, emblems, and luggage rack. The stainless trim is also very nice including the windshield and door window trim. WHEELS/TIRES: The Dodge “Road Wheels” are in very nice condition along with the chrome trim rings. The FR70X14 Goodyear Custom Wide Tread Radial white wall tires have lots of tread, but are old and have sidewall cracking. A new set of rubber is definitely needed for any highway driving. GAUGES/INSTRUMENTS/CONTROLS: Everything works! Amazing for a 40 year old car and even the factory Air Conditioner blows cold. DRIVE TRAIN: The 383CI V8 starts easily, idles normally, accelerates smoothly, and does not smoke. With only 25,000 miles it is just getting broken in. The 3-speed Torqueflite transmission shifts and kicks down just like it should. The water pump is starting to make some noise and should be replaced at some point. There is some vibration in the steering wheel above 55 MPH, likely the old tires. BRAKES: The power brakes work fine. They bring the car down from speed with no swerving or pulling. The parking brake pedal does not set. STEERING: The power steering works well, easy turning and parallel parking. The steering wheel is centered as it should be. LIGHTS: All lights operate as expected. TRUNK: The trunk is original including the collapsible spare tire, inflator, and jacking tools. The mat is original and the rubber backing is starting to deteriorate. The trunk floor is solid (see photos). UNDERNEATH: The car was rust-proofed at some point. There is some surface rust is evident, but no serious rust issues (see photos). There is some oil seeping from the valve covers, leaving a few drips on the floor. UNDERHOOD: The engine compartment is “as original” and nice and clean. All the original decals and tags are intact. All fluids are up to specification. This is a very rare car as only 1,774 Challenger V8 convertibles were built in 1971. With all the options, this one is even rarer. You will not find a more original example available today. “They are only original once” and this unrestored example is the one to have!
