Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000105 EndHTML:0000008421 StartFragment:0000002324 EndFragment:0000008385 1961 Alfa-Romeo Giuletta Normal Spider Chassis Number AR167419 Owner history: I acquired this Alfa in about 2004 from a friend and SCCA Regional Officer, Larry Dent, who had owned the car for maybe 15 years. He purchased the car from a North East Indiana collector, Farris Gamble, who purchased the car in 1979. Prior ownership is unknown, however, according to Alfa Romeo Historical Department, the chassis number AR 167419 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, manufactured on the 15th October 1960 and sold on the 9th June 1961 to Hoffman Motor Car Co., New York, USA. Restoration History: Larry purchased the car as a complete unit and apparently drove it a bit. He later fully disassembled much of the car and began a detailed rotisserie restoration in his own shop. Larry has owned and restored a number of vintage Porsche, Lotus, Jaguar, Cooper, etc… and has an amazing list of resources for all sports cars. While stripped, he mounted the body onto a rotisserie and went through every square inch of the under side, addressing any rust or damage. He had every piece of chrome and stainless refinished by professional shops. The paint and body was completed by a now-retired pro-body man from Fort Wayne. In all, Larry invested about $12,000, less personal labor, into the car and sold it to me as an unfinished and unassembled car. I had the car for about a year or so than shipped it to Alfa owner/racer/specialist, Charlie Goddard in Muncie, Indiana. Charlie assembled much hardware on the car, addressed much of the mechanical, electrical and suspension. I invested more than $6,000 into this portion of the restoration. Recently, in 2010, the Alfa was taken to a specialist mechanic shop and the drive train was again addressed. All fuel, brake and electrical systems were gone through to allow for safe running, driving and stopping. This included a full set of new wheel cylinders at a cost of nearly $1,000 alone. Today’s Status: The car does run, drive and stop well. I have only driven it a few miles since the recent brake work. It may need some carb adjustment. It includes all of the chrome and stainless that is in nearly new condition and NOS wheel covers as shown. Restored wheels and new tires. The paint has yet to be buffed. The light damage to the front passenger above the grille occurred after I agreed to purchase the car, yet before I picked it up, sadly. It has all new biscuit upholstery including seat covers, door panels and rear panels as well as all new tan carpeting (not fully installed). Also have the original unrestored spare wheel with a vintage tire mounted. The convertible top mechanism is present and functional with latches, but the soft material needs to be purchased and mounted. I also have the ORIGINAL TOOL KIT in the original roll-out, which is something rarely ever found. The once-missing passenger headlight bucket has been located and installed! Aside from the soft top, I am not aware of anything missing to finish this car and most parts are like new. I have photo documentation of Larry’s restoration efforts showing the car in bare metal and probably more than 50 pages of information, receipts and related paperwork. Also have copy of 1979 title, and odometer disclosure statement documenting 21,725 original miles when Larry made the purchase. The odometer now reads 26,448. To Market, To Market: In an effort to streamline my collection as well as focus restoration and preservation efforts on other cars, the Alfa is one that must leave. It represents one of the most desirable sports cars of its kind and will be a great addition to any other collection. Thanks. http://s91.photobucket.com/albums/k294/gowildthings/1961%20Alfa%20Romeo/ On Oct-11-10 at 07:59:27 PDT, seller added the following information: I have been contacted by the AROC (Alfa Romeo Owner's Club) Technical Librarian. He has verified that it is Extremely Likely that the engine in my car is indeed the original as imported into the UNITED STATES and sold by Hoffman Motor Car Company. When the car was built in 1960, Alfa did not keep exact records of what engine went into each chassis. However, modern efforts are now able to document the production sequence of the early 60's chassis and drive trains. Chassis Number AR 1674719, Engine Number AR 00102 14739. He also stated that the owner history documentation with the current mileage further makes for a very strong case. Thank you to Jim Neill. On Oct-13-10 at 09:00:02 PDT, seller added the following information: The old soft top IS included. I just looked at the extra upholstery, as I was unsure what it consisted of. A good portion of old carpeting (black) that would be great for patterns and two sets of door panels is included. One door panel set is clearly not original and the other could be original- not sure- and it is currently black, but has been changed from red. The ALFA archives did not give me the original color combination in the response, so I tend to think they don't have record of the original color combination.
