1973 Volvo P1800 ES Sport Wagon VIN: 1836353-007146 OK, I’ll be the first to admit I’m the worst kind of “Volvo-nista”. Way back in the summer of 1975, as newlyweds, we acquired our first two-door ‘67 122S from an older sister and were completely hooked! I’ve always regreted selling that car and know the same feeling is gonna well up in me when this exceptional (and rare) P1800 ES is loaded on a transporter or the lucky new owner flies here to Seattle and does a fun fall road trip home! As I’ve detailed in our other listing that’s running concurrently here on Ebay for an almost identical P1800 ES, this clean, virtually original car came to us recently from my wife’s Uncle Jack. Back in the early seventies, Jack traded-in his ’65 Porcshe 356 for an orange ’73 P1800 ES with Automatic. He arrived at Thanksgiving dinner that year in the new Volvo and at just about every family get-together since, I’ve reminded him to chat with me FIRST if the Sport Wagon ever needed to leave his stable. That day came a couple months back when he called and invited us out to the country to look at “the car”. Imagine our surprise when Jack rolled back the barn door and there sat TWO bright orange 1973 P1800 ES wagons! The 59,000 original mile automatic (with the roof rack) was just as I remembered it over the years, and I became really excited after checking out this nearly identical four-speed with electric overdrive sitting next to it (I much prefer a manual tranny). He and Aunt Alice had been out for a Sunday drive a decade or so ago and saw this car parked along the road with a “for sale” sign. How could anybody resist the twin to a car you’ve owned and loved for more than three decades? Jack struck a deal and bought it on the spot knowing we’d be very surprised someday by his little secret when the proper time came! THEN THINGS GOT EVEN BETTER. He was also including a third complete ’73 parts car in the package! So, here’s the deal: I’ve got both (running) cars listed here on Ebay but really only want to sell one. I haven’t even gotten back up to trailer home the parts car yet and have a feeling it’s probably well worth doing right and maybe putting back on the road as well. CONDITION: The photos really do tell the Volvo’s story. What you see is the result of a wash and vacuum only! The exterior has been re-done long ago in the original factory orange paint because of fading. I find NO evidence of body rust or cancer repair on this car! The chrome bumpers, trim and emblems are original to the car and are remarkably bright and shiny. I’ve always liked Volvo’s classic GT racing wheels and these are straight and true with at least 65% rubber on the 205/70R15 radials . Try and find a set as nice as these with the original, undamaged Volvo-unique trim rings! We’ve made no attempt to paint or update the remarkably clean engine compartment. I really think the vintage finned valve cover adds a cool vibe! Please look over the photos that clearly show the giant rear hatch window and trunk area that made the styling of these cars so unusual for their time. I’ll be sure and include the perfect, original Volvo Owners Manual as well. Mechanically I feel the P1800’s in very good shape. It starts from cold at about the first crank with that very dependable electronic fuel injection system. Uncle Jack told us the engine was rebuilt in the more recent years of his ten-year ownership, but I don’t have a receipt yet from him to back that up. The drive train certainly runs and drives out like a newer motor though! The Transmission shifts through all the gears properly and has a strong clutch. A flick of the small lever on the right side of the steering column while in fourth gear and the overdrive instantly drops the RPM’s back like a fifth gear. The glass is great all-around with NO cracks. Same goes for the factory black vinyl dash – I don’t find any splits or cracks in the usual places. About the only negatives I can think to point out is an eight-inch seam split on the outside edge of the still-very-nice driver’s front bucket. Have a professional hand stitch it closed, re-dye the front set and the result would be awesome! Also, someone “borrowed” the radio mast, but a Radio shack replacement will work just fine. Having now sold several hundred vehicles here on Ebay and thousands more from our regular location, we’ve helped arrange long-distance shipping for many of our customers. I’m no longer surprised when folks from as far away as Alaska, Eastern Canada, Chicago, New York, California, Arizona, Texas and even the Mexican Baja fly in and drive their new purchase home.
