Vehicle Detail
1987 Porsche 928 S4 Let's start with some simple rules for this auction: If you have no money, DO NOT BID. If you are a Scam Artist, DO NOT BID. If you need permission to buy this car, DO NOT BID until your Spouse, Mother, Father, your cousin or uncle the used car expert or retired dealer, Clergy member, Accountant, Attorney or bartender approves the purchase. So let's be very clear: this car is being listed on ebay to sell, so my time is focused on helping serious buyers receive accurate answers to their questions in a timely manner. I do not waste your time, and I expect the same courtesy as well. With these simple rules in mind, here is the background on this car: This car has a Pennsylvania title, branded as a CLASSIC VEHICLE (15 years or older). For PA residents, you can choose to keep the Classic Title, in which case you only pay a one-time plate charge of $75, with no future renewal required. In PA, Classic tagged vehicles are inspected annually, but there is no emission inspection required, regardless of what county you reside in. You can also re-title it upon transfer back to a regular title; your choice. For purchasers outside of PA, you can transfer the title into your state based upon whichever options apply in your state of residence. I purchased this car on October 9, 2007. Prior to my acquisition of the car, it had sat outside for quite some time, and there are traces of acid rain spots in the paint. Since I purchased the car, it has remained garage kept on a daily basis. My need for selling this car is due to a recent home purchase, which did not include a pre-existing garage. I have several of my cars in storage garages away from my residence, which is neither convenient nor inexpensive. The car underwent quite a bit of detailing to remove the contaminants from the paint, and to general clean up the car and make it presentable. The service records are sketchy at best, but it did have a timing belt/water pump replacement performed 7,000 miles ago, but because of age, this should likely be done again. I have working on several small electrical gremlins since buying the car, mostly in the way of cleaning ground contacts, replacing items such as light housings, window switches and the like. The car is turn key dependable and starts with little effort, even after sitting for 2-4 weeks at a time. The previous owner installed a pair of Devek headers, a CAT back exhaust and a Devek Stage 2 ECU chip. The car also sits on 17 inch Cup 2 wheels, with Kuhmo Ecsta 225/45R17 up front and 255/40R17 in the back. Regardless of what you or anyone else thinks, these tires completely suck, and are some of the worst tires I have ever owned. I have a new unmounted set of ZZ3 AVON's that I will include for a Buy-It-Now purchase. Otherwise , they will be available after the auction close for $850 for the set. For anyone clicking the Buy-It-Now Button, you will also receive the following: The aforementioned set of NEW Avon ZZ3 Tires An Ignition wire set, with spark plugs ($472.00) An 8 Volume Shop Manual set (price a set out, and you will be astounded) The walkaround: Exterior: The paint is Felsengrun (Rock Green Metallic). On the nose, you will see a black textured material has been applied. This is radar absorbing stealth paint (just checking to see if you are paying attention!). Seriously, it is a Griots Garage product no longer available that was intended to be spayed on before a road trip, then peeled off upon arrival without any stone chips or bug juice. I chose to leave it on, but it can be peeled off at anytime you choose. The left rear corner has had some paint work, possibly from some parking lot damage. There is also some clearcoat issues on the cowl and on the leading edge of the sunroof, as you will see in the photos. The GTS rear spoiler was added at some time prior to my purchase. The Cup 2 wheels are in good shape, but the right rear has suffered some slight curbing and could be improved with some minor restoration. The tires are at about 60%, but they are horrible and really the worst part of the car. I have had them rebalance and still are miserable to drive on, which is why I have the new set of Avon's ready to install. All the lights works as they should, and as you can see in the photos, the driving lights, high beams and headlight motors all work as they should. Interior: The prior owner had a dog, and as you can imagine, the dog was allowed to ride in the car, which took it's toll on the seat leather. After I acquired the car, the seats and carpets were removed and cleaned until no dog hair or other trace of an animal could be found in the car. The dash and the instrument pod do have cracks, as do most other 928's, but this is a fixable problem. Electrical and Maintenance: The only item I have yet to attend to is the Thermal Control Unit. This unit controls the cooling fans, and currently the fans remain on (the control unit remains in an ON state) when you turn off the ignition. Left unchecked, this would run your battery dead. I have a battery safety shut-off mounted in the trunk, which serves as an extra measure of theft security, and serves to shut off or reset the thermal control unit. The stereo head unit is not functioning (it too may be a ground issue), but with the 32 Valve V8 blowing exhaust through the pipes, I really have never cared much; I'd rather listen to that engine playing one of my favorite sounds. Care and Feeding: This car burns Premium Unleaded. 92 or 93 is acceptable. If you don't know where to find the Premium pump at your gas station, consider another car. Predetonation is not a good thing with high performance engines, 87 and 89 Octane garbage should only be used in lesser, more mundane cars, not this one. Factory Options List: Porsche includes a sticker in the trunk area which includes each of the factory optional equipment. This car is equipped from the factory with: C02 Equipped with Catalytic Converter 220 Locking Differential 418 Protective Side Mouldings 481 5 Speed Manual Transmission 490 Hi-Fi Sound System 494 2 Speakers on Rear Shelf 513 Lumbar Support - Right Seat 533 Alarm System 537 Left seat with Positrol and Lumbar Support High Output Air Conditioner 650 Sunroof This car has seen very few miles in the past 3 years. Typically short cruises to dinner or to the ice cream stand. If you are introverted, or don't like people, then reconsider buying this car. You will get noticed, and when you pull into any gas station, ice cream shop or Starbucks, all eyes will forget about the that common Z-06 and will target a vector on you and your ride. While these cars weren't necessarily rare, they don't come out to play very often, which is why even after 23 years since they were one of the fastest production cars on the planet, they still command attention and are still more capable than most cars built today. Let's be clear: This car is not a perfect time capsule back to 1987. It is a used car, with wear commensurate with its age. It is sound, rust-free and worthy of the investment of time and money to make it as perfect as the buyer sees fit. It is a Porsche, after all. The winning bidder is responsible for arranging shipment. or local pick-up. A $500 non-refundable deposit is due with 24 hours of auction close, unless prior arrangements have been made. The deposit can be made by paypal, and will need to be an instant payment. The remaining balance is due within 7 days, in the form of cash or certified funds. I will NOT accept paypal for the final payment. I will store the car for up to 30 days for the buyer, after receiving full payment, in order for shipping arrangements to be made or for the car to be picked up. Storage beyond 30 days will incur a $10 per day charge unless prior arrangements have been agreed to. I have shipped cars many times, and so I am aware to the delays that can be incurred, so I can be reasonable and will help in any way I can. I am not interested in trades...well almost. If you have a nice later model Honda Reflex or Silverwing Maxi Scooter, I might be interested, depending on how much cash is included in the deal. Otherwise, I really am not interested in trades...I need to reduce my stable until my new garage is completed in 2011. Please feel welcome to ask any questions that I may have overlooked, but be sure to have already checked your bank or credit card balance beforehand...serious buyers only, please..
