Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Up for auction is this 1967 Pontiac LeMans that I have owned since late 2004. It is with great regret that I list this auction, as it is not for financial reasons. This car was to someday be a project and a gift to my now 13-year old daughter who had come to like the car very much at a young age. The gift was to be at a time when she was of driving age and had proven herself responsible. It also held some very specific conditions to be maintained until that time, that I hoped would prevent her from taking the some of the paths that her older sister and brother have taken. Sadly, she recently decided at the age of 13, that experimenting with marijuana with her older sister and friends was more important than someday owning this vehicle, so her loss is your gain. In time, if she corrects her path of life, we may be able to share an automotive experience, but sadly, it will not be with this car. This car is in DRIVER CONDITION and has many issues that I will try to describe as best I can. The exterior was painted a short time before I purchased the car. It appears to be a single stage acrylic enamel, and is fairly presentable. It is better than an ‘amateur’ job, but a little short of professional. Still, no embarrassing drip marks or anything obvious. The interior had been half heartedly redone, with seat covers installed over the old front seat upholstery, and the upper part of the back seat. The lower part of the back seat appears to be original and in fairly good condition. The aftermaket door panels made for these cars tend to be slightly too large, and these were no exception, causing them to ‘catch’ on the rear panels and sills when opening the doors. In time, this has caused the clips to rip out of the cardboard backing. The carpet has also come loose from the driver’s side panel. The shelf liner is also stained and warped and will need replacement. The sail panels were also poorly glued and are peeling. The dash pad was replaced, but now has a split in the center. The gauges are original or older replacement, and suffer from the oxidation problem that is typical on these cars. I had planned to replace them, and they are easily available. This car has the rally clock option, (non-working) but could be replaced with the ‘clock delete gauge’ if you cannot find one. All of the gauges perform their functions properly other than the clock. Some of the bulbs are also burnt out, but this will be easily resolved when replacing the gauges. The regulator on the driver side window is shot, so the glass collapses back a bit when rolled down part way. It is fine when rolled down all the way, but will require some finesse when rolling it up so that the door will properly close. The 326 engine with 2-barrel carb runs good and the 2-speed powerglide transmission shifts smoothly. The powerglide does leak at the rear seal... enough to require fairly frequent checking of the fluid level. The engine does use a moderate amount of oil, and loses some from leakage as well. In spite of this, the car does not produce blue smoke, except a slight amount after long periods of storage, probably from dried seals. As shown in the pictures, the chrome valve covers were added, as well as headers and dual exhaust sometime before I purchased the vehicle. I believe the odometer reads around 100,000 miles, but I believe the mileage to be higher than this. I have a copy of the title from when I purchased it and I believe it states somewhere around 94,000 miles back in the mid ‘90s. When I purchased it, it read around 83,000, and doubt it could have flipped a second time, but it’s possible. This car has had bodywork over the years, and there are some repairs that are not easily seen right away. Rust bubbles can be seen starting again at the back corners of the doors, and in a slight line just above the moulding at the front half of the quarter panels. Bumpers could use a rechrome. The back one has a slight frown to it, probably from a previous “bump” incident. A sheet metal repair was made to rear part of the driver side front fender. It is visible with the door open, but appears well done from the outside. The car has been stored since I put it away for last winter at the end of October. Still, it fired right up when I turned the key! The worst part... The floor pans have suffered from settling moisture over the years and need replacement. I knew this when I purchased the car. The rust perforation can be seen in the photo that shows the area under the passenger side carpeting. As I remember right now, the driver side is not quite as bad. I did not lift the carpet on that side, but inspected under the vehicle. The trunk pan had previously been patched, and is similarly in need of attention if you want to finish the car properly. The best part... The structural integrity of this car is still excellent, and it would make a great restoration candidate, AND you can drive and enjoy it now at a price that will be less than most “basket case” cars that are for sale! You will not be embarrassed to be seen in it, as it still looks nearly perfect when going down the road! The VERY best part... The new Cooper Cobra radials and the restored Rally II wheels were newly installed last summer, along with new reproduction PMD center caps in the correct colors of black with red lettering (rather than the more common red with black lettering) This car would make a great restoration candidate, or a GTO clone... (even though I hate GTO clones) However, unlike some Lemans examples, it still has its correct Lemans trim all intact... unlike some HALF-ASSED attempts at cloning, like a GTO hood and grille while leaving the Lemans taillights and lower mouldings. The REALLY good part... There is no reserve, and the starting price is more than fair. I will consider offers, but don’t be a bonehead and tell me you want to buy it for my starting price, as it should bid at least a bit higher than that! You can contact me with questions and I will answer them the best that I can. I strongly encourage you to come inspect the car in person, or have a third party inspect it for you. If you cannot do that, then bid accordingly. I have given all the information that I can think of, and I will add more info or answer questions openly, HOWEVER... There could be issues that I am unaware of, either because they have recenly developed, or because I was unaware of them during my ownership. I am not knowingly attempting to sell you a piece of crap and scam you, but if you inspect the vehicle in person, it is probably almost guaranteed that you will find something else that is wrong. Take this into account when placing your bid, and realize that you will be getting a very desirable Pontiac at a great price that will need some attention. Also, I will try to get some underside photos sometime soon, but please don’t ask me to photo every square inch of the car... If you need every detail you really need to come look at the car in person. If you bid, you are bidding to OWN the vehicle at the price you bid! You are not bidding just to outbid someone else so you can come and negotiate a lower price after you find more things ‘wrong’ with the car. All New York State vehicles that are model year 1972 or older have NO TITLE. There is only a TRANSFERABLE REGISTRATION which is sufficient to transfer ownership. This will transfer to a title in the state you live. A winning bid or acceptable offer will require a IMMEDIATE $500 down payment with Paypal. If no contact or payment is made from a winning bidder within 24 hours, I will assume that you are randomly bidding from a stolen account and move on... I don’t care about ebay’s rules, these are mine! The balance will be paid in CASH when the vehicle is picked up. No overpayments, third-party checks, fake cashier’s checks or whatever scam is the flavor of the week. If you have a legitimate casher’s check, I know of local financial institutions who will gladly cash it for you. I will also accept full payment via Paypal if you prefer. I can store the vehicle safely indoors for a reasonable and agreed amount of time, and I can also help arrange for shipping if you do not have a shipping service you use. If you have bid, or are planning to, I also prefer that you drop me a note letting me know who you are and that you have an actual interest in purchasing the vehicle. You can also call me at reasonable hours at (607) 427-5788. Leave a message if I do not answer and I will call you back in a timely manner. Happy cruising! On Aug-29-10 at 12:55:13 PDT, seller added the following information: Other things I've forgotten... The rear springs are little 'saggy' as can be seen in the photos. It does not look that bad, but takes significant bumps a little hard in the rear. There is a small chip in the windshield on the passenger side that has become a small spider crack. (less than the size of a dime) The windshield laminate is beginning to break down, causing the glass to appear a bit 'foggy', particularly along the top. Nothing that looks horrible or causes vision issues. The cardboard glove box liner is rotted/ripped out, but it comes with a new replacement. The AM radio does not work. STILL an incredible deal! Happy bidding! On Aug-30-10 at 09:31:58 PDT, seller added the following information: In answer to numerous questions about the engine... I truly do not know the number of miles on the car, but I would guess that it is a lot. The engine may have been rebuilt in the past, I do not know. I have also not done a compression check or any other major internal inspection. I know that I have driven the car about 15,000 miles since 2005 with no issues. (When I purchased the car in November of 2004 it went immediately into winter storage and I did not see it until spring) This is the first summer I have not gotten around to getting it out. Although it runs well, I would have to call the engine somewhat 'tired'. While it will give adequate service for a weekend cruiser for years to come, (provided you watch the oil level!) I would say that if I were restoring the car I would almost certainly do a rebuild. STILL a great deal! I hope this helps... Happy bidding!
