These are arguably the cars that put BMW on the map and made it a household name today--the 2002 is the predecessor to BMW’s popular 3 series. Complete with a peppy 2.0 liter motor putting out a little over 100 horsepower, these nimble handling cars win the hearts of their owners with timeless good looks, a practical nature, and by being fun to drive. Because of their popularity and high build quality, these Bavarian beauties were sold plentifully and good examples can still be found today. That being said, there is a few common problems with the cars, namely rust. The rear shock towers, front fenders, and rocker panels are all common places to find this “cancer.” However, many parts are still available since there is such a strong following for the BMW 2002/1600 cars. BMW 2002 owners buy their cars because they love the way they look, they are fun to drive, and the owners don’t view themselves as the everyday point A to point B driver. True classics, the BMW 2002s continue to appreciate in value, with NADA’s classic car values:Low Retail: $6050. Average Retail: $10,200. High Retail: $17,900. The new owner of this car will enjoy it for years to come! This BMW 2002 This 1975 model came originally from Newport Beach in Southern California, so this car was mostly rust free to begin with. Since then it has been with its second owner here in the Rocky Mountains where it picked up a few rust spots, mostly on the front fenders, which were replaced with rust free examples. All other spots were touched up and block sanded, the paint was then mostly stripped down and then refinished in the original fjord blue metallic. After the paintwork a new windshield was installed. All the glass is in nice shape. Contact me for photos of the body work process. The interior of this car is very unique. Black leather sport seats from a 2001 BMW 330ci provide much better comfort and support than the original blue bucket seats which were showing their age. The new seats are not power adjustable, so they work in the older car. They do however have multiple functions for height as well as fore and aft movement. Also, if you are good with electrical things, they are wired and ready to be hooked up for heated seats. The sunroof works perfectly and is especially nice on a summer evening. The dashboard is in great shape and the rear seat was replaced with a black rear seat to match the fronts. New black 2002 specific floor mats help to keep things looking nice. The BMW Lecarra sport steering wheel provides for a thick sportier feel than the original, while still providing for easy turning of the steering wheel. Mechanically the car is really quite good. It runs well, starts easily and drives smooth. It does not blow any smoke and pulls strong throughout the RPMs. The transmission has been rebuilt, and is very solid. The clutch feels good and engages where it should. However, the front driver side brake caliper might be seizing up, as it pulls to the right under hard braking. I would suggest an alignment or something and maybe having the tires balanced as there is a slight wobble at times from the steering wheel. Overall though, a very nice car that someone could easily enjoy as a daily driver or weekend toy. Service records are complete and included since the second owner in the early eighties. Please feel free to contact me with other questions or to further discuss the car and its price--it is for sale locally. Notes: Please keep in mind this is an old car, and though it has been well taken care of and is in good shape, it is 35 years old.
