Vehicle Detail
1953 M38A1 Military Jeep made by Willys. Original 4 Cyl F-head engine and running gear. Beginning in Sept/Oct of 1953 this was the first year of the round fender jeep. The Civilian models were the first CJ-5's and the parts are pretty much the same. Approximately 102,000 M38A1's were manufactured, many seeing service in Korea and Viet Nam This is an increasingly rare model of jeep. I have number 55,560 Have the original wheels including a spare; tires would need to be replaced. They hold air but are not road worthy. This jeeps is not running. Engine fires up , but this jeep would need a new gas tank, wiring and the steering column installed ( I have it) . Not sure about the transmission but it does shift through the gears. 3 stick transmission and transfer case control. No gauges. Rough wiring harness. The windshield frame is in excellent condition, but the glass would have to be replaced. The tub is in good shape with minimal dings and dents, however the floor board in the back has been cut out by previous owner. The driver and passenger side floor boards have the usual rust thru and would need to be repaired. This is a good start on a project jeep, especially for those interested in restoring a part of military history. I have seen these jeeps that have been restored selling for $5,000 -$10, 000 on the net. It would be nice to think that someone would restore it to its original glory, but if you are looking for a mudder project or a parts jeep that would probably work for 53-71 CJ-5 models, then you may be interested in this one.
