1980 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup Hi, I am selling a 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup, with a Diesel engine & 5 speed manual transmission. This truck has 074,620 miles showing on the odometer, which I was told are original, and is really in good condition for its age. Many of these miles were from being pulled behind an RV, according to the previous owner. It is set up with a recieve on the front of a truck, so it can be towed if desired. I recently obtained this truck from Eastern Oregon, which is High-Desert, where it had been parked under a carport and only started occassionally the previous four years. The owner could no longer drive due to medical problems, after hitting his 80's, which is why the truck sat. I purchased the truck from the owners son, after he had to move into assisted living. Cosmetics: The truck is almost all original, right down to the factory AM/FM Casette player, and still has the factory VW windshield. The interior is in great shape, and is all original. The seats have no tears. The dash does have a few cracks, but could be restored to original. The headliner is sagging, and the speaker on the driver side door is missing. The wing windows on the doors need work, and are kept in place with tape. The drivers window needs a new regulator, and will come off track if rolled down. The body of the truck is in good shape, with no rust at all due to coming from a desert region. The paint looks to be original, and is in fair shape, although the rain makes it look better than it really is. The body is very straight except for a long dent on the rear of the bed, passenger side. There are small scratches & scuffs, but pretty darn nice for an 31 year old truck with original paint. I believe the canopy may have been on the truck since new, and the bed is in good shape. The canopy is missing the door handle on the left. Mechanical: The truck fires up instantly, and the engine seems to run smooth. We did an oil change on the truck after we purchased it, and also put in a new battery. The transmission shifts smooth, the clutch feels good, and the brakes stop the truck, and it drives straight. The truck does smoke white when accelerating hard or under a load, and we aren't sure what this is attributed to. It doesn't smoke at idle. I have read online that it could be attributed to a couple of things: Timing being off, a bad headgasket, or a crack in the head. I do not have the mechanical knowledge to know how to fix any of these issues, so I haven't even tried to. It doesn't seem to use antifreeze, and it has not overheated on me in the 50 or so miles I have put on it. I haven't driven it much due to expired tags. Most everthing in the cab seems to work, including the radio, except the heater fan is not operating. The battery light stays on, although the alternator is operating fine. The truck will need new tires, the tires on it are very old. I hold a clean & clear Oregon title to the truck, in my name. Tags are expired on the truck. I am happy to help the high bidder in shipping, and will deliver or meet any shipper in the Portland area. I do NOT recommend driving this truck long distances until new tires are put on the truck, and all issues are fixed. I can deliver within a 400 mile radius for $1 per mile one-way, must be prepaid.
