Vehicle Detail

Every picture was taken by me the day before this auction started. Here we are crossing the Fremont Bridge at about 55mph. NO RESERVE AUCTION I did not set a reserve price on my Mercury Coupe. All that I ask in return is for your bids to be real and your intent to purchase be sincere. Every picture was taken by me with my handheld Canon digital camera on June 14th. No photo has been altered in any way. This is my car and the upcoming photos are true to her real-life appearance. As I mention below, my offer of answering questions is genuine so don't hesitate to contact me. This is a "turn-key" car that's ready to be enjoyed and appreciated. PLEASE, read my terms of sale towards the bottom of this screen. I'm a kindhearted person but I will not bend on these basic terms unless previously discussed during the auction. A little communication goes a long way. This is a 100% rust-free Texas car. Even the undersides support the definition of rust-free. My collection consists of mostly cars from the 1960's and early 70's. And, although my Mercury is outside of my normal window of interest, I pursued owning this car for almost 2 years. It is an outstanding and rare car in wonderful shape. Lightly customized with frenched headlights and hidden trunk release and other subtle cosmetic touches. She's been updated to a 12 volt style alternator, electronic ignition, Holley carburetor with electric choke, Fenton headers, etc. Body, paint and interior are very nice. That's the short version. For those that prefer a more detailed description, just look below: The body and paint quality are very nice. All seams, gaps and body panel alignment are impressive. Even the door hinge areas are excellent. Based on my knowledge of the cars history, the black paint is several years old but holds a remarkable shine and high gloss. Clear reflections on every surface. My explorations of the car have discovered no abuses of bondo or other body fillers. Sighting down the sides show smooth panels without waviness or washboard effect. Rechromed bumpers with nice original stainless trim, grille, door handles etc. No ugly pitting. Glass has all been restored or replaced with new. Other than very minor blemishes and small rock chips that have been taken care of with a tiny touch-up brush over the years, the exterior is beautiful. Again, any paint flaw is only visible on very close inspection. This car shows and presents extremely well and more than deserves every compliment it receives every time I take her out of the garage. Truly, a very pretty automobile from all angles. She isn't capable of a bad picture. Even the lower areas are excellent. The trunk has some very light, hairline paint blems where the original handle was located. Only visible from inches away and wouldn't show in a photo. All glass is crystal clear. Both windows roll up and down smoothly. The tail pan is also excellent. The trunk release is a hidden cable operated "T" pull handle located inside this rear fender. Easy to use when you know where it is. All lights are bright and working correctly. Tailights, brake lights and the even the license plate light. Rear side windows open and close perfectly. The 15 inch chrome moon wheels are excellent and I just installed brand new wide white wall G-78-15 tires. Magazine worthy photo if I do say so myself. The roof-line is also exceptionally straight. This is an extreme close-up of the area right under the passenger side headlight. It's hard to tell with all the reflections in the black paint but please notice the paint crack in the center of this photo. Only visible on very close inspection but I wanted to mention it. This small flaw has remained un-changed. The interior is nicely done. Headliner, seats and carpet are in excellent condition. In-dash CD. There is a crack in the original 1946 clock lense. I'll describe the sound system in a later photo. Speedometer, fuel gauge, temp gauge and oil pressure are fully functioning. All lights work correctly, even the dash lights and interior side lights. She's also been updated with electric windshield wipers. The horn blows. Yes, I was doing 20mph when I took this photo. No, I don't listen to rap music and neither has anyone else that's owned the car. The sound system is simply high quality regardless of musical taste. At 42 years old I prefer music from the 70's and 80's. All genres sound crisp and even whether it be low volume or turned up to headache levels. This was all professionally done. Entire trunk area is gorgeous. Quality craftsmanship. Mechanically, the car is a sweetheart. The flathead V-8 runs like a watch and based on my research, it is the original unit. She starts immediately cold or warm. Good throttle response and acceleration. Holds great oil pressure. The standard 3 speed transmission shifts correctly. A slight synchro grind occurs if you shift too quickly from 2nd into 3rd. A brief pause is all it takes for a smooth shift. The rear-end is quiet. The brakes have been gone through and stop on a dime. I believe the suspension is the original style and is in sound condition. The front has been lowered and the car drives very well. She handles and tracks down the road nicely. Remember, much of the car retains 60+ year old technology but it all operates properly. Always dependable and I have enjoyed every drive I've taken. This car is not designed for cross-country travel unless your comfortable cruising speed is around 55 or 60mph. For local destinations it would be hard to find a car that's more fun to be behind the wheel of. An auxilary electric fan was installed for additional cooling. She has never over-heated. Temperature stays between 160 and 190 degrees. A GM alternator and 12V conversion have been performed. As mentioned previously, she's also been updated with a Holley 4bbl carburetor with electric choke. Even after sitting for extended periods, she starts right up! Fenton headers. Engine casting stamped on each head. My research indicated that these stampings coinside with the 1946 models. Again, this vintage escapes my normal expertise. Offenhauser intake manifold. The undersides are what us "car guys" hope to find. 100% solid. No patch work or ugly welded panels of any kind and I've looked all over this area. I knew this was an extremely solid original car but even I was amazed at this undercarriage. They are rarely found like this anymore. Even the backsides of all fenders are excellent. The tail-pan areas of these cars always seem to require some repair. I find NO evidence of that on this car. All of my eBay experiences have been enjoyable as I've rotated through and sold members from my collection. I feel fortunate for the kind comments I've received. My opinions have always served me well and I stand behind them. I welcome and encourage showing my Mercury to anyone with genuine interest. My home and place of work are both less than 20 minutes from the Portland Oregon Airport and I will gladly pick you up and open my garage door. There are approximately 90 photos to view and I apologize if some look similar and you get dizzy scrolling through them. It is my intention to make this as close to you seeing and touching the car for yourself as possible so I tried to show the car in differing light conditions. It's always a beautiful car. Feel free to click on the "ask a question" link here in the auction and I will respond to all polite questions. Phone calls are great too. My number is 503-887-1231 and calls between 8AM and 9PM Pacific time are just fine. My auction runs for 7 days and is scheduled to end on Tuesday evening, the 22nd of June at 7:30PM Pacific. I reserve the right to end my auction early in the event I accept a genuine offer and the car becomes no longer available. Thanks for your time, DAVE Terms of Sale: 64yr old vehicle being sold AS-IS: Please read and agree with the following: I have described my car honestly, to the best of my ability based on 25 years of owning and driving classic cars. I have faith in the drivability of this car and to my knowledge everything is in good working order based on my written description above. Free and clear Oregon title with current registration will be forwarded to buyer. I drive this car regurlarly in nice weather but she is over 60 years old and routine service and repairs should be expected. If you are not comfortable with a sight-unseen purchase, please come see the car for yourself or have an independent inspection performed PRIOR to bidding. I will not be responsible for the decisions of others. I would appreciate the winning bidder contacting me immediately upon end of auction just so the lines of communication are opened. My number is 503-887-1231. A $1000.00 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction ending, preferably through PayPal just so we are both protected. Wire transfers and verifiable cashier checks are also acceptable. I'm an easy going person so if you need to make special financial arrangements just let me know BEFORE you bid and I'll try to help. I have been with the same bank here in Portland for over 8 years and the Management staff knows me. You are welcome to contact them for your own security if you like. The remaining balance is due within 7 calendar days of auction end in the form of secure funds. Some banks and credit unions do not finance vehicles of this vintage. Make sure if you are financing that your financial institution accepts the year and value of this vehicle before bidding. Please have your method of payment arranged prior to auction ending. TRANSPORT - SHIPPING I am happy to be an active and hands-on part of this process from start to finish but the buyer is ultimately responsible for pickup or shipping of this vehicle and any pre-purchase inspections need to be done BEFORE auction ending. If you wish to have it shipped using a service, I will gladly assist in loading and be present for the transport condition form and other reasonable help. Locating a transporter is the buyers responsibility but I can make recommendations and share the relationships I've built. Vehicle transport has become very reasonable. I personally use a privately owned trucking company. Dennis is a great guy and his direct number is 503-343-4884. He is based here in Oregon and has handled my transport needs perfectly for the last 3 years with careful handling, excellent rates and fast service even all the way to the East Coast. Dependable Auto Shippers (D.A.S.) is a transporter that eBay recommends and my experiences with them were just fine. My location zip code is 97267. Coast-to-Coast transport is around $1500.00 and even less the closer you are to Oregon. Shipping to Australia, Europe and other Countries has also become affordable and easy to arrange and I have experience in these types of transport as well. If you are outside of the United States or Canada, you MUST contact me BEFORE bidding. If you are an eBay member with negative history or have a (0) or low transaction score, I need to hear from you just to verify your sincerity and accept your bids as genuine. We all started from (0) and I'm happy to give a leg up. I reserve the right to cancel bids for these reasons. Communication is all I ask. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time if the vehicle is no longer available or otherwise SOLD. On Jun-16-10 at 14:32:01 PDT, seller added the following information: Independent front suspension and DISC brakes Additional information: I was so focused on providing detailed information regarding the condition of my Mercury that I neglected to mention the most desirable upgrades done to the car. She has independent front suspension, manual rack and pinion steering and DISC style brakes. The brakes have been updated to the newer dual reservoir style master cylinder. Also, due to the car being black and having such a high shine, some reflections in the paint can be mistaken for flaws. Please note: These are reflections of things in the distance and the paint is simply acting as a mirror. There are multiple photos of all areas of the car and many are up-close. They are all current pictures taken by me on June 14th, 2010 and show the car accurately and clearly. It's a beautiful car. Thanks again for your time, DAVE
