Vehicle Detail
This magnificent Freestone and Webb Aluminum Bodied Rolls Royce was delivered to Phillips Furnishings LTD in London in June of 1955. Chassis Number DLW 137, Body 1778, Design 3171A – Touring Limousine. Page 54 of the “The Elegance Continues” shows an identical car, DLW 44. This was the Earls Court Show Car for 1954. Eventually thirteen were produced. It is much like the Hooper Empress line, but with what I think is better styling. Just painted in two-tone Tudor and Windsor Gray. The upholstry is all done correctly - black leather in the front for the drivers compartment and then camel in the rear. Sometime in the 70’s the car was shipped from England to Virginia (I have several receipts from that era). Eventually in 1988, she ended up in Chicago with a gentleman who had a limousine service. It had been stored for about two years when I purchased the car in March of 2009. I have pictures of the car before I started the restoration. As with all projects I was optimistic that with some attention of a good mechanic, body man, and upholsterer, that I could bring this Rolls back to reasonable shape without tremendous expense. And as usual, I was incorrect and too optimistic - I was able to bring her all the way back, but the expense was far beyond what I had planned. The real question is not what has not been done with the car, but what hasn't been done. Here is a partial list of what we have done in restoring this Beautiful Rolls Royce. 1. Transmission and Engine replaced. 2. Complete upholstery everywhere including headliner, side panels, seats, carpet - all new leather. The boot was also completely redone. 3. Brakes, motors on windows and electric divider, horns, etc - electric throughout the car redone as needed. 4. Rechromed everywhere – bumpers, hubcaps, mirrors, etc. 5. Brand new Whiteside Wall Tires. 6. Woodwork refinished - wheelwell aluminum stripes replaced - new sunroof. 7. Engine Compartment painted and detailed, including brass fittings and lines. 8. Body work all over the car, doors rehung, woodwork where needed, excellent new paint job. All Aluminum so no rust.9. Tools in trunk refinishedIf you look closely at the pictures you can see that I cleaned the leather covering the rear springs has been cleaned. You can see the straps holding it on - the leather was in excellent shape after 55 years. Look at the pictures and you can see all that has been done. She runs great, and after a year of working getting everything done, I am going to sell and start on another project. Why list on Ebay, rather than just run Internet ads or sell at a High End Collectors Auction? Because Ebay will probably give me more eyes than any other medium. I’m a long time collector and love this particular Style. I have been over basically every nut and bolt in this car and will gladly answer any questions. Reserve is very reasonable.
