Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 I am putting up for sale my early 1985 Porsche 944 coupe. I bought this car back in 1998 when I was working at a Porsche dealership and have loved driving it ever since. In the last few years my work has taken me away from home for extended periods and I haven’t really been able to drive it much. I believe that I may have put 100 miles on the car in the last three years. I have always kept the car maintained and not allowed it to degrade over the years. I have replaced timing belts, water pumps and numerous other bits and pieces over time as needed. In 2008 I spent better than $3,000 for maintenance including a new power-steering rack, brake shoes and rotors, cold-start sending unit, tune up and many other items. All major systems operate properly and the car starts right up. I would really like for the car to go to someone who is going to drive it more than I have time to. It is a wonderful machine and deserves a new owner who is going to drive and enjoy it. I am listing the car with a $1,000 starting price and no reserve to sell. I think that the eBay bidders market will set the right price for this great car. I am including a few great extras if the winning bid exceeds $2,500 and/or $3,500. Please read further on in this listing about the possibility of your getting a Saratoga Top and a set of genuine Porsche 993 series 911 Turbo wheels if you exceed these winning bid thresholds. This car is what is referred to as an “early ‘85” 944. All 944’s produced before February of 1985 have the “square” instrument binnacle. Dash and instrument parts for these cars tend to be much led expensive than those for the later “curved dash” 944’s that followed. The car runs well, handles well and is a really fun car to drive. I am not going to say that my 944 is some sort of pristine museum piece. This is a great car to use as a driver or convert into a weekend club racing or track car. I have included a lot of pictures to let you see what this particular 944 is all about. Here is the breakdown as to what you can expect. Exterior: Overall, the finish is pretty good, especially for a 26 year old car. There are a few paint chips, scratches and little dings to show for the car’s age. There is some paint peeling away from the body near the lower wheel openings. The alloy wheels have exterior oxidation and could use to be refinished or replaced if you are looking for a better look. There are some paint chips on the nose of the car as well as the side mirrors. Nothing horrible but you should know. The “helicopter tape” clear plastic behind the right front and rear wheels has become dark with age. You could either replace the protective “stickers” or leave them as-is. I have tried to show all the issues in the pictures accompanying this listing. Interior: The leather seats have no rips or tears and operate smoothly on their tracks. The carpeting is good as are the floor mats. The interior actually is in very good shape except for the dash. There are a number of small cracks that have appeared on the upper dash. This is a pretty common thing for the 944s. The steering wheel is in good shape and I replaced the leather boot for the shifter some years back. The interior is clean but you could detail it to “concourse” standards if you wanted to. Mechanical: The car starts right up with no hesitation and idles at 800 RPM, as it should. There are no leaks or drips under the car. There was an issue with the power steering back in ’08 but that was addressed with the new rack. All major mechanical systems operate properly. Sunroof: The power sunroof operates properly and can be easily removed to open the entire roof to the sky. I have a Saratoga top glass sunroof that fits perfectly and works well for this car. If the sale price of my 944 is greater than $2,500 I will include it in with the sale of the car. Saratoga tops usually sell for between $750 to $1,000. The one that I have is in perfect condition and includes its original vinyl storage bag. I went out to get the car ready for the season and discovered that there are a few small items that need to be addressed to make this 944 complete. They are as follows. Needs New Tires: Although the tires have plenty of tread, they have begun to develop some sidewall cracking from age. I would strongly recommend that you replace the tires right off the bat. I could go out and get new tires for the car and have you not be happy with my choice so you get to choose the next set. Tires for the 944 will run $75 to $100 each. Needs New Radio Antenna Installed: I have a direct replacement for the one that is in the car. It comes with the sale of the car and should take you less than an hour to install. Needs Rear Hatch Receivers: The rear glass hatch is held down by two receivers. They need to be removed and cleaned up to operate properly or you can replace them for about $60. I would just clean them up so they work but it is your choice. Needs Rear Hatch Gas Cylinders: The gas struts that I put in to hold up the rear hatch are getting a little soft and sometimes won’t hold the hatch up. You can replace them for about $35 for the set. Needs Driver’s Window Switch Repair: The driver’s window goes up and down fine, the contacts on the switch are a little gummy though. You can take the switch apart or buy new ones on eBay for $12. There are some extras that I will throw in if the winning bid reaches certain thresholds. They are as follows… If the bidding for the car goes over $2,500, I am going to include a glass Saratoga Top. I got this one from a collector new in the box. It fits well and is a great addition to the car. The Saratoga Top comes with its original storage bag and is in great condition. These are pretty rare and usually sell for $750 to $1,000, if you can find them. If the bidding for the car goes over $3,500, I am going to throw in a set of Porsche wheels and tires that I have from a 993 series 911 Turbo. The wheels are 225/40 ZR 17’s for the rears and 205/50 ZR 17’s for the fronts. The tires are Bridgestone ZO2’s and have better than 50% of tread left on them. There are a few marks of “curb rash” on some of the wheels but nothing serious. They are straight and true and will work out well for you if you are looking for even better handling or intend to use the car for Porsche Club or SCCA racing. The wheels will need spacers to fit properly but do fit the car. I have included pictures of the Saratoga Top and the 993 Turbo wheels in the listing. Again, if the bidding does not reach the sell prices previously listed, the Saratoga Top and the 993 Turbo wheels will not be included and I will list them in a future auction. And, so, there you go. This is a great car that I am sure will make someone who is willing to invest ten hours or so and some short money to make the minor issues right. If you have any questions about the car, please send me an email and I will try to get you a straightforward answer as soon as I can. As for payment, cash and PayPal are OK as is a certified bank check. If you are bidding, you are intending to buy the car. Winning bidders who do not pay will be unmercifully given bad feedback and otherwise harassed. If you are looking to somehow scam me on the transaction, please don’t even try. I don’t need the aggravation and you probably don’t want the jail time. Title is free & clear and I will give it to the buyer when payment has been received and/ or your bank check has cleared. I have tried to tell you all I can think you would need to know to make a decision about whether this 944 is the right one for you. Again, if you have any questions I can answer, send me an email. Thank you for considering this Porsche 944 as your next car and good luck in the auction!
