This 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop was purchased new on February 1, 1962 by Loyd Dixon of Santa Ana California. Mr Dixon purchased his new 1962 Mercury at the local Mercury Dealer by the name of C.B. Knickerbockers Lincoln-Mercury in Santa Ana California. This 62 Monterey cost Mr Dixon $3894.00 which was a fairly hefty price tag for a new car in 1962! I love this, the deposit left for the car was $50.00 and apparently Mr Dixon put another $1400 down on the car and then financed another $2,444.60 with the payments spread over 24 months at $113.05 a month. This was a pretty big car payment by 1962 standards as my Grandfathers 1965 Plymouth payments were $78.00 a month over 36 months with a $100 deposit. Can you imagine having new car payments as low as $78.00 a month? Early 1962....it was a great time....It was a different world ..... JFK was President of the United States, the New York Yankee's won another World Series and all was right in the world! This 1962 Monterey is well optioned, runs great drives nice, looks good, is a good solid Western car with every piece of Original Documentation you would want for your Classic car investment....still has the Original Chrome License Plate Frame from CB Knickerbocker's Lincoln-Mercury in Santa Ana California that was given to its Original owner when he purchased the car new on February 1, 1962! As you can see this 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop is a pretty clean Original car and still wearing its Original paint colors of Code "M" Sultana White with the cool factory original Turquoise Upper Door Paint....all 1962 Mercury Montrey and S-55 Models had a contrasting paint color painted just above the upper door trim which went back to the rear quarter glass and was often the same color as the interior trim. The Monterey is a good clean solid driver that appears to have repainted one time in its original color and it has a nice clean overall appearance. This is what a California car should look like with nice solid original body panels, floors....just a good solid Original California car! The Monterey was purchased by Loyd Dixon in February of 1962 and was Mr Dixon's driver for the next 8 years before he sold it to a couple in California by the name of Frances and Sharmon Green who purchased the Monterey in August of 1970. The Original Documentation for this 1962 Monterey is extensive from its Original Bill of Sale, Original Owners Manual and Owners Manual Supplement and even the Original heavy PaperTags that hung from the Air Conditioning Unit and the Idle Control Instruction Tags that were mounted on the Monterey when it was new at the Dealership, Original State of California Temporary Registration and even the February 23, 1962 Post Marked Envelope from CB Knickerbockers that contained the Original Owners Manual Supplement and other paperwork addressed to Loyd Dixon....just about every single Registration from 1962-2002 is still with this car as well as most every service receipt from day 1, Original Build Sheet, Dealer License Plate Frames and so much more. This is one of the most heavily documented old cars that I have ever seen. The Green family bought the car in August of 1970 from the Monterey's original owner, Loyd Dixon and the Green's moved to New Mexico and the car lived in New Mexico with the Greens for the next 28+years. I have the paperwork from when the Green's sold the car to its third owner, also from New Mexico, a gentlman by the name of Richard Vacarro who purchased the 62 Mercury in August of 1998......Mr Vacarro owned the 62 Mercury from August of 1998 and then took the car with him when he moved to the State of Maine in 2002 where it would remain with its Third Owner as a weekend and fair weather cruiser. He owned the car for approximately 10 years. So there you have it......the car was Purchased New by Loyd Dixon in February of 1962 and it was with Mr Dixon for 8 years before it was sold to its second Owner, the Green's who kept the Monterey for 28 years before it was sold to its third owner for 10 years! Everything is Documented from Day 1 and you would be hard pressed to find a 48 year old car with this much Documentation. I know that I have never seen this much Original Documentation for any old car with just about every registration and service receipt over the first 46 years of its life! This 1962 Mecrury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop is a good old Original car that runs and drives pretty well. The optional "Z" Code 390 cubic inch - 300 horsepower 4 Barrel engine starts easily and engine runs well with no unusual noises or smoke.....it has dual exhaust and the engine sounds good. The engine runs strong, accelerates well and cruises along great at Highway speeds. The Transmission seems to shift well with no problems and is the Optional 3 Speed Automatic where many of the 1962 Mercury's had the 2 Speed Automatics....this Dual Range Automatic Transmission was an Option and works as it was intended. This Mercury's engine compartment is nice and clean and appears to have been very well kept with the nice original Gold "Mercury" script Valve Covers, Engine is nice and clean, Air Cleaner is nice, Firewall is nice, hood hinges are nice original.....the whole engine compartment looks very Original with the complete Original Air Conditioning Unit looking nice.....the Power Brake Booster, Power Steering Pump....everything looks nice and clean and all looks dry. The Power Steering and Power Brakes work well although the brakes do pull to the right at times which is likely an adustment issue. I have driven this car up Interstate 95 about 20 miles up and back and it seems to track nicely down the highway at 60mph. The Electrical components seem to be in good working order with all Lights, Headlights, Dash Lights, Turn Signals, Brake Lights, Interior Courtesy Lights, AM Radio, Windshield Wipers all in good working condition. The Clock doesnt work and the Air Conditioning will need to be serviced although I was told by the previous owner that the Compressor engages and that the Blower works but the system would need to be serviced at the very least. It looks nice and clean and appears to be 100% complete. The Factory Under Dash Air Conditioning Unit is in very nice condition and looks great. The AM Radio is the last of the old school tube radios and takes a minute or so for the tubes to warm before the radio plays but once its warmed, it plays just fine. The Temperature Gauge works fine as does the Gas Gauge....all interior under dash and rear interior lights work well. Overall, a good original car with most of its Original components still in good working order. The car seems to run cool with no overheating problems and the engine runs well and starts easily even after the car has been idling for awhile...always starts up right away and runs good. I dont know of any serious issues with this car as the engine starts easily, runs well, transmission shifts fine...the car drives and steers just fine and stops fine. Like most very Original cars that are nearly 50 years old, Im sure it could use some things done and like all Classic cars, there is always room for improvement but Id have to say that this is a pretty good original 1962 Mercury Monterey 2 Door Hardtop. Its not a restored car or a "show" car but its a solid, attractive old Merc and it runs very good....just a nice clean fun old car with great body lines, unique Taillights, cool body trim and a great original color combination. I believe this car is realistically priced and somebody will get a heavily documented 1962 Monterey at a fair price. I have seen 2 other 1962 Mercury Monterey 2 Door Hardtops sell here on ebay over the last 6 months and neither of those cars were 390 Powered nor did they have Factory Air Conditioning or documentation.......these cars were not even in the same league with this 62 but they sold. This 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop has a nice solid Original California/New Mexico Western Body. Keep in mind that this car was a 3 Owner car for the first 46 years of its 48 year existance and most of its life was spent out West. These Western cars are a real pleasure to see after growing up on the East Coast and seeing cars like this already badly rusted as early as the mid 70's. That is not the case with this 62 Monterey. The car appears to have been repainted one time in its original colors and it presents itself well. The Doors Open and Close Nicely and the Doors Lock and Unlock with the Original Mercury Keys! All of the body panels have very good original fit and finish which is pretty cool as many of these early 60's cars lack good panel fit.....not the case with this Monterey 2 Door Hardtop....good original panel fit and alignment. The body has a couple of little parking lot dings but my new car has those. There are some minor nicks, scratches and there are a few small bubbles under the paint along the midbody trim on the passenger side quarter panel. These are nothing to get excited about and I believe they are simply a result of the old prep work done in that area before the car was painted many years ago. This car has really a real nice solid Original California body but its still a 48 year old car so there will be some minor stuff to be expected from a very original unrestored car. I have been under this car and its just a good solid California undercarriage... not new but very good for an unrestored exceptionally original car! The Original Chrome and Trim on this car is above average for an unrestored 48 year old vehicle. The Chrome, Aluminum and Stainless Trim is very nice overall with some pieces showing their age but most of the trim is very nice. The rear bumper has a little tweak on the passenger side but its something that could be easily corrected and quite frankly, its not a big deal. These cars can be difficult to find with good trim and this car has real nice original side trim, nice original grill, headlamp bezels, hood trim, rear body panel aluminum trim, and nice original Taillight Bezels and lenses. You would be hard pressed to find another unrestored well kept original 1962 Monterey with trim as good as this....not perfect but very nice original. Overall, the body is very good on this 1962 Monterey 2 Door Hardtop...sure there are some minor issues but I see nothing that I would consider any type of serious issue on the body. Its a good solid straight old Mercury and has a very attractive look. The Paint is older but still looks good and outside of some of the things mentioned earlier, its a good looking car with a good body...not flawless or perfect but a good solid car. The Interior in this car is for the most part, very Original! The Original Code "97" Light and Medium Turquoise Vinyl Bench Seat Interior had held up quite well over the last 48 years. The Seats still look nice and clean although there is some light wear in a couple of the seams but I wouldnt change a thing...they just look very nice overall. The Original Door Panels are nice originals with wonderful color and with the Silver center sections looking very nice and the Upper Interior Door Paint above the door panels looks great. The Original Turquoise Carpets still look pretty good although they are 48 years old and showing some light discoloration but are not terribly worn or damaged...again I would touch them as they still look very good. The Headliner was replaced on the car and although it looks good, fits fairly well and is Turquoise in color, it was done in a different material than the original...its clean with no rips or tears and the dome light is mounted and working well.....again I wouldnt touch a thing. The Windows roll up and down nicely and the car looks cool with the windows rolled up or down....with the windows down you get the cool look of the cars roofline and the True Hardtop look and with the windows up, you see the cool factory color of the Original Date Coded Tinted Glass which is a very unique blue/green tint which works really well with the original interior color and the cars exterior Sultana White paint. The Dash and Instrument Cluster look good for an original 48 year old car. The Original Knobs are all nice with everything working as it should and the Original Instrument Cluster looking very good as well. The Original Painted section of the Dash looks good although the upper portion was repainted where the Original Dash Pad was in place. The previous owner removed the Dash Pad as it had some cracks from the New Mexico sun and since it was optional equipment, these cars look just fine without the Dash Pad although I have the Original Dash Pad and it will go with the car if you wanted to have it restored. I wouldnt even do anything to the interior of this very Original car as it is clean and completely servicable and comfortable. This cars interior is very roomy with comfortable seating for 6 people. The Original Steering wheel and Original Horn Ring are still with the car and the Horn Ring has nice original chrome and the steering wheel is the correct original in its Blue/Turquoise. The Original Dash Trim over the Glovebox door looks nice and clean as does the rest of the Original Dash Trim.....just a very original car! The Trunk has all of its Original Components from the Original Jack, Spare Tire, Trunk Mat, Cardboard trunk to quarter Panel inserts and looks nice and clean overall. Its a good solid old car for sure. Overall I would say that this car is a good original example of a 1962 Monterey 2 Door Hardtop that was a 3 owner car over a 46+ year period. It appears that all 3 owners of this car cared deeply for the car as they owned the car for 8 years, 28 years and 10 years....these former owners of the 1962 Monterey were obviously quite fond of the car. The Original Documentation combined with a good solid Western body, nice Options and the good overall original condition of this car make for one nice collectible Classic car that will always be a great car to own, drive and when you decide to move into another classic car at some point, well this cars provenance and originality will always make this a good collector car. If your looking for a clean 1962 Mercury Monterey 2 Door Hardtop with Wonderful Original Documentation and with the Optional Big 390-300hp engine, factory air conditioning and a wonderful color combination then look no further. This is an Original unrestored car thats obviously been well loved and cared for over the last 48 years and its got plenty of life left in her for you to enjoy for your local cruise night gatherings, weekend pleasure cruising or your local car shows. Im not saying that this is a show car but rather a clean original car thats full operational and can be driven and enjoyed today. It presents itself very well and looks wonderful going down the road. Its a nice solid California/New Mexico car that was owned for a combined 46 years but its 3 former owners. The car is not only heavily documented but it also has its original drivers side door hinge pillar mounted Warranty Plate and the Vin Number and Warranty Plate decode as follows: Vin Number: 2J63Z510379 2 = 1962 Model Year J= Los Angeles Assembly Plant 63= Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop Z = 390 cubic inch 300 horsepower 4 Barrel Carburetor engine 510379= Los Angeles Assembly Plant Sequential Build Number Warranty Plate Body:65B = Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop Color: M = Sultana White Trim: 97 = Light Turquoise and Medium Turquoise Vinyl Interior Trim Date:29A January 29, 1962 Scheduled Production Date DSO: BLANK Axle: 1 = 3:00-1 Ratio Transmission: 4 = Dual Range 3 Speed Automatic The car still has its Original Warranty Plate...Original Vin Number stamping on the Frame, Original Bill of Sale, Original Owners Manual, Original Owners Manual Supplement, Original Temporary Registration from the State of California to Loyd Dixon, Original February 23, 1962 Post Marked Envelope from CB Knickerbockers to Loyd Dixon, all California Registrations from Loyd Dixon 1962-1970, License Plate Frames from Original Selling Dealer, Original Instructional Tags that hung from the Air Conditioning Unit, Original Instructional Tag that hung from the Manual Idle Control that shows you how to Raise the Idle from inside the car when the AC in operating, All Service Records from Loyd Dixon during his Ownership from February 1, 1962 to August 27, 1970, Original Title Transfer to Frances & Sharmon Green with Temporary California Registration, All New Mexico Registration Cards from 1970-1998 when the Green's owned the car, All Service Records for all work Performed on the car from 1970-1998, Various Insurance Cards, Original Title from Richard Vacarro when he Transferred the Title in New Mexico back in August 25, 1998 showing 34,970 miles but the odometer shows around 43,000 miles now...im not sure of the exact mileage on the car but I guess it could be 43,000 but assume its been around. Various New Mexico Registrations and Service Receipts from Mr Vacarro from 1998 until 2008 including Registrations from the State of Maine when the Vacarro's moved to Maine. There are also Insurance Cards, Registration Cards and Service Records from the Vacarro Families Ownership of this 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop! This 1962 Mercury is a very good original unrestored car that was always well maintained by its 3 Previous long time owners. The Monterey was always kept in good running and driving condition and is a good turnkey driver. Sure there are a few little things that the car could use but nothing that I have not covered in this auction or nothing thats worth getting excited about. This is a good original 48 year old Mercury Monterey and they are not very common cars to begin with. These cars are very hard to come by and with the unusual style of the body, you are sure to get plenty of attention when your out cruising. I was at the Gas Station with the car a few weeks ago and I spent a half hour talking with a guy who was very excited to see the car. It turns out that this guys Father purchased a 1962 Monterey new in 1962 from Waller Motors located just outside of Philadelphia and this guy rook his drivers license test in his Fathers 1962 Mercury Monterey! What are the chances? It was just a very cool conversation and this guy who was every bit of 60 years old and he was looking at the car and you could just see that he was flooded with good memories of his Fathers old Mercury! Its stuff like this that makes this hobby and the cars so much fun. The cars are very cool and I enjoy the cars as much as anybody but its the people who make the hobby what it is! I know this has been one long auction to read but I wanted to wrap it up as quickly as possible so here you go.... This 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop is a good Original car that spent most of its life out West. The Original Documentation shows you just where this car was and who owned it along with whats been done to the car over the years. Its a clean old car and is a turnkey, get in and go car. Sure there are some imperfections in the body and the older paint but the car is still quite clean overall and extremely solid. The Original 390 4 Barrel 300 Horsepower engine runs well with no unusual noises and no smoke. The engine compartment is nice and clean. The engine sounds good at an idle and has a nice rumble through the full dual exhaust system. The Interior is pretty clean for an Original 48 year old Original and is definitely good driver quality or better....just very good inside for an original car and the colors and great. All of the interior trim is in nice shape. The cars exterior has some minor blemishes which Ive covered pretty well in the auction but its a good looking old car and very solid. The exterior trim is better than average, in fact you would be hard pressed to find better original trim on one of these cars. The car does not need anything major but I believe the brakes could use an adjustment but they work well...just a little pulling to the right... hell, the car just might need to be driven a little more as it has not been used that much over the last 1 1/2. It fires right up and idles great...sounds good...accelerates well and the Transmission shifts fine. The car has its Original steel wheels with its correct Original full wheel covers and good Radial Tires. I think this car would look pretty sharp with a set of Vintage Mag wheels...maybe a cool set pf Torque Thrust wheels or Vintage Cragar S/S////maybe even a set of Keystones. I know that some of you might be purist and I understand that completely but installing a cool set of Vintage wheels on this car would give the car a whole new personality after the last 50 years! I also have a bunch of 406 parts, engines, T-10 Transmissions, factory single 4 Barrel Aluminum Intakes, Factory Dual Quads and Factory Tripower set-ups... THANKS AGAIN....TONY 215-499-2693On May-10-10 at 15:00:53 PDT, seller added the following information: This is a good solid Original Western 1962 Mercury Monterey Custom 2 Door Hardtop that was sold new in Santa Ana California and the car spent its first 8 years in the Santa Ana California area with its Original Owner Loyd Dixon. The car was purchased new at CB Kickenbockers in February of 1962 and most of this cars Original Documentation is still with the car from the Original Bill of Sale to the Original Owners Manual and Owners Manual Supplement....Original Temporary Registration and all of the California Registrations as well as the Original Tags that hung from the Air Conditioning Unit which were used to show the new owner how to operate the AC Properly. There is also a Tag used for the Speed Idle Control which is mounted under the Dash. This was used like a Manual Choke Cable and you simply pulled the cable out to raise the engines idle while the air conditioning was on....pretty cool stuff and the Original Tag is still with the car. The second Owner purchased the car in August of 1970 and they kept the car for the next 28 years in New Mexico where the car was used as a daily driver by the Green Family. The Greens sold the car to a gentleman by the name of Vacarro also from New Mexico and he used the car from 1998 until he moved to Maine around 2002 and he owned the car for approximately 10 years. This is a good solid Original Western car and it is straight and very solid. The car appears to have been repainted one time many years ago in its original colors and the car still looks good with the old paint. There are various imperfections but nothing that looks all that bad. There are some minor bubble ablove the passenger side upper trim but nothing that appears to be a problem. The undercarriage is quite solid and what you would expect from a California car. The Original 390-300hp "Z" Code engine runs well and the transmission seems to shift as it should. The car has dual exhaust. The Original trim is pretty nice for Original 48 year old Trim and the chrome seems to be pretty nice original. Much better than most any 48 year old car that has never been restored. The Interior is clean and very original with just the right amount of wear but nothing that takes away from the great original look of the car. These 1962 Mercury's have a very Unique look overall and are unlike any other year Mercury with disctintive body lines and very cool Taillights that almost appear to be custom but they are Factory Original. This is just a cool old car and one of the most heavily documented Original 48 year old cars that I have ever seen. You will be bidding on a very solid and very original 1962 Mercury Monterey....not a restored or flawless car but a very good original car that runs and drives very well. The air conditioning is said to work but I would have it looked at and serviced. These old Ford AC Units are very cool and look great under the dash and when they are working, they will keep the car nice and cool on a Summer day. If your looking for a Super Original and Exceptionally Cool car with Wonderful Original Documentation then look no further. They say that Documentation is everything when it comes to these old cars and if that is the case then this car is about as good as they get with every Registration Card for 40 years along with the Original Bill of Sale and so much more! The Body is straight and solid and the original interior is fairly clean overall. The chrome and trim are good and the car just looks good. The engine runs good and starts easily. The engine compartment looks very clean. The car is just a very cool and interesting old Mercury that can be enjoyed while you make the little personalized changes to make it "yours".....its always cool to add your own touches to a classic car to make it "yours" ...... Remember that this is a very Original car and an Unrestored car... runs well and is quite solid and straight but its wearing older paint that still presents itself quite well. You can enjoy this old car while you improve on it if thats what you'd like to do or you can just leave it totally stock. I would love to see this car with a set of Vintage Torque Thrust Wheels and come other Custom touches to make it look like a period Hot Rod....just my personal thoughts. Thanks again for all of the interest and please feel free to call me at 215-499-2693 or email tony tonyhemi63@aol.com with questions. I have driven this car around the neighborhood and up the Interstate and 65mph and it seems to run and drive very well. As with any old car Im sure there are some small things that will likely need to be done but I dont see any serious problems with this car and it drives very nice down the road....just a good old Original 62 Mercury thats always been well maintained.
