Vehicle Detail

OK, let's try this again. I am going to sit down this weekend to add up invoices, but my gut feeling tells me I have about $30-35,000 in parts alone in the car, not counting what the car originally cost. About $18,000 in the engine & accessories certainly helps the amount add up quickly. Then there are the thousand hours or so of labor into the build- there is real value here, I believe. Anyway, I think someone may come look at the car over the weekend, and when I am out showing it, I will get some interior, trunk, and engine bay shots. I will need them for the Mecum auction anyway. Everyone have a good weekend. Back again, Thursday morning. First of all, the most recent photo of the car is the one I added yesterday with the trailer & a woodpile in the background- I was just getting the car out of storage and warming it up. Too dumb to take additional photos while I had it out. Also, a question about the undercarriage reminded me- when I converted the car from power steering to manual, the original steering box was rebuilt by Rodes and re-installed. This means the slightly quicker ratio of the PS box is there instead of the slower manual box Ford would have supplied on an original manual steering car. BTW, all the components of the manual steering- idler arm, centerlink, tie rod ends, pitman arm- are new pieces. Of course I installed a new rag joint. Also, when I went to the floor shift, I changed the column cover to a floor shift type. The dash bezel for the instrument panel has been rechromed. New step plates at the doors. Hi, I added some photos & wanted to describe what you see- remember, the engine is now a 2 4bbl carb engine, while some of the photos still show a single 4bbl. One of the build pictures shows how the battery cable was run up to the front, as well as the original color (springtime yellow), as well as how good a shape the car was in when I got it. You can still see the original undercoat, seam sealer, etc., no surface rust or internal rot, even in the cowl & torque box area. There is also a shot of the single 4bbl engine going into the car with the C6 attached. The original Fairlane fan type exhaust manifolds are shown in another photo. So everyone knows the whole story, the single 4bbl engine was built by Kurt Gartner in Minneapolis, put out about 466HP, and I raced it for about 2.5 years. One of the cylinder heads developed a leak (it was heavily milled) so I took the engine out & had it completely redone by Barry Rabotnik of Survival Motorsports as a two 4bbl engine with brand new medium riser heads. When Barry was finished, it developed 499HP through the stock manifolds! Below, please check out the questions someone sent me regarding some of the items on the car. Ford advertised the GTA as available with the 427 engine, although none are known to be built. However, the existence of the1967 Fairlane 427 with an automatic is fairly well established, as mentioned in Larry Davis' and Mike Mueller's books. Because I started with a Fairlane 500, I wanted to build a car that would be like the Fairlane GTA, with no side trim. Of course the F A I R L A N E letters on the quarter are a 1967 trim; I believe they also appeared in 1966. The horn trim ring used on the car is a 1966, because I don't like the horn pad on the 67; however, I have the original & it comes with the car. I bought this car in California in 2003, as a 90K mile H-code automatic car (big block 390 w/ 2bbl carb, C6 trans). The black license plate on the front of the car is original, & I will include the original Calif. registration. Just so everyone is clear, this is not a real R-code, but an exact duplicate, down to the hard to find, expensive items, like a 427 sideoiler with the correct date codes. Then I started a two year intensive build. Additional photos available, please send me a message. If you have any questions, call me at 317-727-7410, thanks. The car was taken completely apart, almost all of the sound deadener & sealer were removed, and the entire unit chassis was mig welded again. In other words, where the factory thought one weld would do the job, there are now two or three more additional welds, so when you put your foot into 500HP there is no body distortion. Lots of other spots were selectively reinforced. Everything received rustproof primer & topcoat before going back together. The battery was relocated to the trunk, per FoMoCo spec, & the cable run properly up front. The entire chassis was coated in rustproof primer, , then finished in chassis black. The interior is mostly original, with a new carpet set, & an original radio-delete instrument panel. The original dashboard had cracks so it was sent out to Just Dashes for a $550 rework. New package tray, new headliner. Interior is very sharp. The car was assembled as a heater-delete but all the original climate control equipment will be included in the auction. The shift lever was relocated to the floor using stock Ford pieces. The original C6 trans was sent to JPT in Eaton Rapids, MI for a performance rework, while an original 427 block was located. The engine recently received brand new NOS medium riser heads, and was built by Barry Rabotnik of Survival Motorsports, famous for his Engine Masters FEs. Dyno sheets and all specs come with the car. Brand new repro 2X4 carbs from Carls Ford parts sit on a numbers correct factory original 2X4 aluminum manifold. The 427 is dressed out exactly as the original R-code, except for the oil filler caps/valve cover breathers. I have the cookie cutter factory originals & will include with the auction. The engine sits in the same location as the 390 did, with all new mounts and access holes drilled through the fender aprons exactly as the originals had. The radiator is the original top & bottom tanks with a 3 row recore, runs cool. Cooling fan is a stock Ford viscous drive. MSD ignition is used, but per rules, hidden out of sight. Real Fairlane fan type exhaust manifolds were located (not repros) and the exhaust system is 2 1/2" X crossover mandrel bent with Dynomax mufflers in the stock locations. Stainless steel band clamp hangars are used. The rear axle is the original 9" housing, straightened by Moser Engineering, who supplied the Moser reinforced 9" case and a Detroit Locker w/ 4.11 gears. New Moser 31 spline axles. The u-joints are all 1350 size, with a specialty driveshaft. I do have another pumpkin for the car, will let buyer decide which one they want. Leaf springs are brand new & band clamped; special leaf spring to axle u-bolts & saddles are used. Gas tank is original, with new in-tank pickup, fuel filter, & 3/8" diameter gas line just as the originals had. Going to the front suspension, a modified Shelby drop gives much less bumpsteer than the stock geometry. Roller bearing spring perches & a-arms allow the stock suspension pieces to move freely without binding. Special strut rods allow adjustability & low friction, also has new springs. The car steers & stops great, even jumping on the brakes at 112 through the traps. The stock rear drum brakes are all new, while the front drums were exchanged for the optional 1967 Ford front disk brakes. The brakes are manual, not power assist. All brake lines are new, actually everything in the brake system is new. The body sports a Crites fiberglass repro hood, cut & fitted to the stock oval air cleaner. Some of the photos may show a prop rod & hinges, but I went to a four pin liftoff setup later. I will include the original hood springs in the auction in case someone wants to go back to that. The hood pin supports were fabricated to photos showing how the originals were shaped. The color is Antique Burgundy, a 1967 Ford color & similar to the color of the first ten Thunderbolts. The car is painted in base coat/clear coat, & was never sanded or buffed, just left as sprayed to give it an original paint look. Obviously a sand & buff job could be done at any time. Miscellaneous: New repro trunk mats, new windsheild, new door, window & trunk rubber. New trim letters- "427", FAIRLANE, & FORD are now on the car. The small poverty hubcaps are stock & could stand to be repainted, but the caps themselves are in good shape. Wheels are new 6" wide Wheel Vintiques repros. I built the car for running in Pure Stock races, and it runs in the low 12s, but the car can easily & comfortably be driven on the street- although I would recommend putting some good tires on first, because in pure stock we have to run repro tires. BTW, the rubber on the car is a mile deep- I only have about 50 street miles on the car, which is the reason I am selling it, I just don't have time to drive it. I am ready to move onto my next project. Compression is about 11.3 to 1, so it can survive on half leaded and half unleaded premium on the street. I haven't tried all unleaded premium yet. At the track, I use 100% 106 & 109 octane leaded race gas. Absolutely nothing needs to be done to this car- take it out & enjoy it. I have a clear Indiana title & can help to arrange shipping. Buyer pays for shipping.
