Vehicle Detail
I have a 69 that I got a while back from a guy who had started a frame off resto. He got it all done, up to the body. He was not able to do bodywork and so the project stalled. I had just finished my Traveler, and was looking for another project so I bought it and put it in my garage. Now I have not gotten to it, and its in the way of me starting work on my 31 Model A, which is what I really want to be doing. I have a hundred pics of the resto up to this point. I have the title, the manual, the line setting ticket, which says its a doll up actually. I do know that what I have is a combo of two scouts, body from one frame from the other, and I have not bothered to cross the numbers to know which one the title and lineset are from (body or chassis). Its a 304 with a Borg unit. The guy POR'd EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. Mechanically he tore it all down and reassembled. Went thru the axles, engine, etc. Had the heads done, etc. Then he began replacing the floors and rockers, which is all it needed. He tacked in the POR'd new floor pans. The rockers are with the truck but not installed yet. They are really simple pieces, just tack weld seams, no face welding. Saddle tanks are gone and a nice underbody tank/filler was put in by a previous previous owner. They did a nice job with it. I have the tail gate, back seat, spare tire mount, and roll cage, all pretty hard to find accessories. I do not have a top for it. Has new tires on non-scout rims. I dont have factory rims for it. Sheet metal is all straight and just loosely hung on the tub. I have all small parts in boxes, its all there. The guy was really really meticulous with all that, which is probably why he never got anywhere with it! He had reciepts, which I believe I have, for $6,000 worth of parts, etc. I have photos of the WHOLE process so you can see all the work he did. New shocks, alternator, wiring harness, on and on everything new. Plus all the old take-off parts. It has been in a warm dry garage for about the last 8 years between the guy I bought it from and myself, from what I can tell from the bills of sale, etc. which I have. It was sold in AZ originally, then went to Montana, then came out east only during the resto process. It is fully complete, down to the small parts. I have boxes of the original parts, to make it complete, plus the part he bought new. I went through them when I bought it, but that is it. I see things like the wiper bottle, headlights, tailgate mechanism, pedal assemblies and linkages, etc. I have three boxes of parts. What does it need? Master cylander hooked up (brakes and lines are ALL NEW but dry), fuel and brake lines are all new and run but not hooked up in engine bay. Body should come back off for paint, and then final assembly. The door bottoms have some visible bondo, so I would assume they will need patch panels or at least dent work, but it appears very minor, they are straight and solid and close well and the lines are all good, etc. I did not grind out the bondo to investigate but I can see it there and want to disclose everything since this is a web based sale. Has new floor pans, tacked in place, but not to my liking. I was planning on pulling them out and going over the body off the frame and doing it top to bottom. Its sort of loose assembled and plopped on. The guy was really anal, really good at buying new parts, but not at all good at bodywork and never even attempted any other than tacking in the floor pans with his flux core mig. The fenders, hood, gate, etc are really nice. The exterior of the tub is really nice (sides and fenders). Most of what would have been patched has since been cut out (floor pans) and replaced. For a scout 800, I would say it’s a 6 or 7 of 10 for unrestored original scout tubs. 10 being Arizona truck, dry as a bone, no dents, no rust to be fixed, ready for paint. 8 being a rusty-ish tub but that has had all the pans and parts nicely welded in and replaced and is now good as new and ready for paint. I have the parts, but they are not welded in really (yucky tacked). Mechanically, I think it just needs gas and brakes final connected in engine bay, and a battery. Oil is full and new, it was run at the engine shop on the stand, he told me, and then given back to him, but its been 4 years or so I would guess. Assume the carb needs a check over as it may be dry. Mechanically I am confident in saying its EXCELLENT and DONE, and nicely done at that. Anyone looking to build a show quality 800, this is a really really good start that only needs the body work done, and very straight forward body work at that. Obviously, being in New England already, its a rare find, clean and dry and no rust, which is why I grabbed it when I was not ready to work on it yet. Here is a list of the NEW parts: New wiring harness and fuse block New stewart warner gauges New ignition box New coil New plug wires New alternator New fuel pump New starter New brakes, complete, including line, springs, etc. New drums New tires (though not very sexy) Entire frame and undercarriage painted with POR-15 New seat covers I think, that or the originals look very nice. Heads done, valves seats and springs done Block tanked and painted but no work done that I am aware of New heater box and hoses New spring and body bushings (poly) New rockers, not installed, PORd Rear bumper original, POR’d New tank under floor installed (very nicely). NO SADDLE TANKS. Don’t have them. Glass is all good.
