Vehicle Detail
1975 Porsche 914 1.8 liter.I bought this car in early 2003 on Ebay from someone in California, and had it shipped cross-country to Florida. The car was barely a runner when I took delivery. After some minor work on my own, I took the car to Dave White Racing in Tampa, FL - which was the best move I could have made. In one afternoon, they had it tuned and running like it was the summer of '75. Over the course of the next few months I drove and worked on the car independently, and on occasion, when I needed the extra help, the guys at White's not only assisted, but also unselfishly dispensed invaluable information that I will forever be grateful for (if any of you are reading this, I hope you are doing well, and again - many, many thanks!). My next goal was to do a 911-conversion on it, but the car eventually ran so well with the 1.8, and was so fun to drive, that it actually became my primary vehicle for the better part of the next year. Unfortunately, as so many stories go with cars like this, when we started having kids in 2004, the car got garaged for more "practical" vehicles. With three cars now in the family, I have no room for a fourth, so I'm going to have to finally let this one go. Current status: I recently put a new battery in the car to try to turn it over, but the ignition switch was "frozen". Once I got over that hurdle, the car would start, but would not continue running. The car is currently at my area Porsche dealer, and their diagnosis is that it will need a new switch control unit (part number 901602702AX). Because of this, I am going to set a very low reserve to get this into the right hands :) Additional information: - The car has it's original interior and seats.- The gear box was replaced by White's and has less than 3,000 miles on it.- The car has wider after-market rims which currently hold 205 Srixon's front and rear (I would HIGHLY recommend replacing the tires, as they sat flat for a number of years).- The car's exterior is not the factory original black paint. I put a low-cost Maaco paint job on it to protect the car during it's original "restore" period. On Nov-24-18 at 13:42:38 PST, seller added the following information: On Nov-24-18 at 15:32:47 PST, seller added the following information: Additional information (Part 2):Here is more information, based on some of the e-mail questions I have received: 1. The car is not currently a runner. To be very clear (per my original listing), the car needs a new switch control unit (part number 901602702AX). This is why the reserve price was set so low. The buyer will have to make this repair, along with any other unforeseen issues not diagnosed by the current shop. As I alluded to in my original listing, this car ran beautifully prior to storage in mid-2004 (the engine was solid). And, although I doubt there will be any major hurdles to surmount (beyond the switch control), always remember that this is a 43 year old vehicle :) We buy, sell, and trade these cars because they are fun to drive and fun to work on (and if I had the time and space right now, I wouldn't let this one go). 2. The photos posted do not show it, but I never got around to replacing the weather stripping around the windows and top. I had the car garaged when I wasn't driving it, and almost never had the top on it... 3. Picture 3 shows a chipped light cover on the driver's side of the car. I'm not sure how this happened, but thought I'd better highlight it in case the winner takes delivery and didn't know it was like this at time of auction. 4. The odometer does not work. It was like this when I took delivery of the car in 2003. 5. The original color of the car when I took delivery in 2003 was black. Most of the clear-coat was gone when it was delivered, so I had it repainted (with no bodywork) to protect the metal from the elements and other workshop hazards (like my ineptitude with a wrench). 6. As far as I know, all of the interior of the car is original, including seats, steering-wheel, and radio. It could definitely use some TLC, but it's not too bad considering it's age... Sorry for writing a small book here, but I'll continue to post answers for viewers and potential buyers as warranted by the questions I receive. Thank you for your interest :)
