Vehicle Detail

1977 Mercedes 450SL Only 65k Miles—Head Turner Iconic light yellow with brown interior--the perfect combo for a Mercedes classic. I bought this 450SL from a retired Air Force pilot in western North Carolina. When I got it, I replaced the entire brake setup: calipers, rotors, pads and changed the oil. It was pretty much good to go after that. The trip odometer shows I’ve driven it 116 miles this week—the odometer, trip odometer, speedometer, tachometer, and clock all work. Hard top and soft top are both included. The car is in pretty good shape, and is certainly a head-turner. The original Becker Mexico Cassette and power antenna are present and working—quite rare for such an old car. The Becker sounds fantastic and the speakers are in great shape. It has the reliable/ easy to repair manual climate control (the a/c is not currently functional). The interior is in great shape overall. The original shag carpet is a really cool touch from the 70’s and looks like new. The door panels look fantastic. The dash has one or two very minor hairline cracks that are barely visible. Also there a few small tears on the drivers seat that are fixable, but not super visible since the seatbelt covers them. All the little things in this car look nice too: hazard switch, window switches, instrument panel, etc—the things you don’t think about but really add to the overall appeal of the car. The original paint looks good but is not flawless. There are a few chips along the driver’s side door and a couple places along the seam where the hatch for the soft top closes. Aside from that, I had the car thoroughly detailed and waxed—and the paint shines very nicely. It is not something that I think needs to be repainted. The car is a solid and reliable driver. If I were going to keep it, I would replace/ fix the muffler that has a hole in it (quoted at $250 in Raleigh, NC) and replace the neutral safety switch which is going bad. Sometimes it has to be started in neutral instead of park (part costs $40 and the labor is relatively inexpensive to replace it, but my mechanic has been booked up this month). The neutral safety switch is not inside the transmission and doesn’t play a part in the transmissions functionality after startup. The transmission shifts and works great; this is just a safety feature. The suspension and drivetrain on this car are solid overall. Nothing significantly different from any other similar period Mercedes I’ve owned. You can really tell the low mileage on the suspension which doesn’t clunk or feel loose like some of the examples with > 100k miles. Feel free to reach out with any questions! Thanks
