Vehicle Detail
For sale: Rare 1970 Ford F100 "Heavy Duty Special". Ford sold this package mainly to ranchers and contractors that wanted cushy half-ton Twin I beam ride, but with better hauling capacity. This truck was sold new in Circle, Montana and was factory equipped with beefier shocks and springs, heavy duty battery and alternator, towing mirrors, and rare 5 hole 16 inch rims. It's lived a ranch life in the high desert sagebrush and prickly pear cactus hauling hay bales, fixing fence, and making trips to the Co-op. I bought the truck as a parts rig for a highboy I'm working on, mainly for the virtually rust-free box and nice grille surround. It hadn't ran in a while, and I decided to fire it up and drive it, and pull a Marti report. After driving it, I knew it was too good to part out. So here it is at no reserve, hopefully saving a rare truck for someone to enjoy and possibly restore. The original 16 inch wheels and hub caps with bias ply tires are included and will be in the bed of the truck when shipped, I put some used Toyo radials with good tread on white spokes on the truck as shown. I'll do my best to describe it below, please read the entire ad and see linked Photobucket album for more detail pics including underside. Exterior: Original Candyapple red paint is faded and worn to a nice patina, very little rust overall, I'd say 95 percent rust free. Has the rare "textured" painted roof option. Many dents and dings from use as shown, most notably in passenger front fender, tailgate, and passenger rear box corner as shown. Driver front fender was replaced after a run-in with a gate. Only exterior rust I can see other than surface is a very small spot on passenger rear of box on a seam. It's hard to see but visible in pics. Underside had a bit of rust that I treated to stabilize it. The roads aren't salted here, and it's arid country, and we never see frame rot. We do occasionally see rust on the underside in areas where mud builds up and holds moisture. This truck had some starting on cab mounts, I treated with rust converter then used POR-15 Patch on some small cracks. The floors had a couple of areas that I put in new metal as shown in pics. Definitely not concours, but should be good for a long time. If you were to restore the truck, would probably want to do floor pans and cab mounts. For a driver it's fine. Glass is good, windshield is not cracked but has a wiper scratch. Grille surround is decent with no major damage, so there's $500 you don't have to spend. Overall its a clean looking truck that draws compliments at the gas pump. Interior: Original in usable driver condition. Would need restored to be really nice. Seat has some rips in original upholstery under cover, and dash is cracked under mat. Headliner needs replaced. Windows roll up and down, heater blower motor works (cable stuck in defrost). Wipers work but only on low speed. Will try cleaning switch contacts before the truck leaves. Floor mat is torn on driver side. Headlights, tail lights, and blinkers work but brake lights don't work - probably plastic switch under dash. Parking brake is non-op. Guages work but dash lens is cloudy as shown. A running truck that you can use and improve as you go. Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out fine. Started every time I tried this winter, even at -20. Original 302 and T-18 4 speed with 3.70 9 inch rear. Truck sat for several years, and I drained the gas and replaced brake master cylinder but didn't go through all the fluids or do a complete tune up so it will need that. I have driven it across town a few times, nothing over 20 miles. Truck doesn't heat, and no major leaks. Does smoke a bit at startup, like from valve seals that got hard over time. Clutch chatters a bit, and there is a hint of gear noise from the rear end. Engine still wearing all it's correct bits like oil bath air cleaner and dual diaphragm distributor advance. Pretty original and correct truck all around. Mileage showing on odometer is 78k, but speedo has been replaced so not sure of exact mileage, it's around 100k per previous owner. Overall solid truck, but old rigs need work, so if you haven't messed around with classic cars or trucks before, adjust your expectations accordingly. These trucks are simple and easy to work on, and parts are readily available. Pricing/Misc: Looked for comps online, but these trucks are few and far between. This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. It runs and drives but isn't fully sorted. Flying in and driving it home isn't viable as Montana is a huge state with many remote areas that don't have cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, I will drive truck to meet your transporter and help load it. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due. Reasonable transport is available, and I will help load the truck on a transport. Vintage 1970 Montana plates shown are not included, but I have other old plates I can include. LINK TO ADDITIONAL PICS INCLUDING UNDERSIDE (copy and paste) - just ask if you need more. Photobucket is clunky, just close the popups and if you have trouble viewing pics try the Firefox browser. I'm currently looking for a better photo hosting site. http://s261.photobucket.com/user/burgundyamx/library/70F100?sort=9&page=1 ****Shipping will be from Helena, MT. I-15 and I-90 both very near, transport is reasonable. So there will be a replacement switch included with the truck, buyer will have to swap it. Good news is that I found a mint grille to replace the passenger side that has a broken tooth. It will be included with the truck. THANKS **********
