Vehicle Detail
Live the vanlife / overland dream! This is a great little camper that's all set up and ready to go. The Good and the Bad about the van: Still under 100,000 mile warranty159" wheelbaseHigh top (6'1" of standing space inside)Average gas mileage 16 mpgTires rotated and oil changed every 6 months with synthetic oil Oil pressure sensor monitor replaced May 2018 (done under warranty)Rear brakes/rotors replaced in 2016 due to sticky emergency brake, all fixed. Front brakes have squeaked intermittently since I bought it in 2015 with 4,000 miles. Had them checked by the dealership last week and they have plenty of life left, no need to replace at this time. Tires have plenty of tread, but I've checked a few curbs so there is some wear. The rear door doesn't open from the outside after I backed into a tree in Colorado. Opens fine from the inside. The drivers side mirror is damaged, and there's also a wee dent in that door. The Build Out: The Bones: The wall panels are 1/4" 5-ply marine grade plywood, and the cabinetry is 1/2" 9-ply marine grade plywood, both finished with 3 coats of Helmsmen Spar Urethane. This is the stuff boats are made of, so water/humidity aren't a huge threat. Under the wood are layers of Tyvek house wrap, foam board insulation, Green Fiber Low Dust Insulation, Reflectix, as well as sound deadening material. The van stays significantly cooler/warmer than the outside temp. I also added a six foot window to the driver rear portion of the van which has windows that open which is nice for ventilation. Speaking of ventilation, a Maxxair Fan keeps the air moving. It has intake and exhaust functions, a remote control, temp triggered turn-on, and finally a rain sensor which closes the lid when it decides to sprinkle in the middle of the night. Last but not least all the screws are stainless steel so she's in it for the long haul. Solar system: Includes two 100 watt Windy Nation flexible solar panels attached to the roof with Scotch VHB tape. Added a piece of aluminum L channel to act as a wind faring. Cables enter the van via a "Link Solar Weatherproof ABS Solar Double Cable Entry Gland." A Y-Solar Battery Charge Controller sends the charge to a 440 amp hour battery bank (four 110 amp hour sealed AGM batteries - no maintenance needed). The battery bank is also charged by the van alternator overflow via an 140 amp Dual Battery Smart Isolator. Everything in the van (lights, vent fan, fridge, water pump) are all DC. A 1000/2000w MicroSolar Pure Sine Wave Inverter flips the DC to AC so you can charge a laptop or other small appliance. There are two lighting systems, both on dimmers. There are 4 lights on the ceiling and two spotlights over the sink/stove area. All the DC circuits are fused and blocked via a Blue Sea Systems ST Fuse Distribution Panel. Kitchen: A Dometic CR-1050 DC fridge/freezer keeps the beer cold and the ice frozen. A Camp Chef propane stove puts out 20,000 BTUs of heat per burner - this thing is seriously hotter than most house stoves I've cooked on. The stove cubby is lined in metal and doubles as extra counter space when the lid is down. A normal-sized stainless Ikea sink makes it easy to wash up after dinner time. There's a 30 gallon fresh water tank in the galley area and a 5 gallon grey water tank that you dump manually. I've gone round and round with plumbing options. It's not perfect, but it is functional. The Seaflo water pump puts out 3 gallons per minute and is rated at 55 PSI. Other Goodies: A 5 Gallon Portable Outdoor Toilet is the answer to nature's call. Add in some RV tank deodorant and empty it regularly and it's all roses. The bench converts to a 4x6 foot bed with 5 inch foam cushions. It's a comfy sleep. The fabric on the cushions is waterproof and wipeable, great for when you have the inevitable spill or an enthusiastic wet dog. The sliding cabinet doors mean you don't have to worry about doors swinging open while driving or inevitably having to move a million things out of the way when you need that *one thing* way in the back of that cabinet. The flooring started out as orange Johnsonite rubber flooring, but the color just grated on my nerves after a while. I laid down a nice grey vinyl tile which hides a multitude of paw prints. Lastly there are curtains for every window as well as reflectix/felt shades with magnets for blocking the light/heat. Or put the felt towards the outside to go into stealth mode. Ok, so that's everything! I've tried to list all the bad and the good. The van isn't perfect cosmetically, but she's been taken good care of mechanically, and I tried to build the camper portion to withstand the worst. It's time for my next adventure, but I'm hoping she finds a kindred spirit ready to explore all that the open road has to offer. Feel free to email with questions, I'll update this posting with answers for anything that I left out.
