Car was purchased new by my father in 2004. All service was done at the proper intervals and at the dealer only for the first 5 years and then my dad took the car to his local Goodyear service center that he had been using for 20+ years to get oil/lube, brakes, battery and of course tire service. Car was in a slight, low speed fender bender in 2005, and suffered only cosmetic damage to the front bumper cover and hood which was repaired/replaced by Regal Nissan, Rowell. Other than that, vehicle has not been in any other accidents or had any major repairs done. In 2011, one year before I received the car my dad had the transmission serviced, flushed and the fluid replaced. He and I both believe this led to the eventual demise of the tranny. It went out in January of 2017. Car wouldn’t shift out of 3rd gear. Which was ok because it will actually start in third from a complete stop and 3rd is also large enough to drive safely home on surface streets so I was able to get home no problem. Reverse works just fine so I backed it up my driveway. I let the car sit for a couple weeks while I went over my options and the battery died. I called AAA (been a member since 1996) and they sent their battery service tech out. He got the car started and checked my starter and alternator and they both checked good! He said the battery was defective (I purchased it with the tires from Kauffman Tire three months prior) but would take enough of a charge to start the car. So I jumped it with my portable once a month, but last month when I decided to fix the car I went ahead and bought a brand new battery at Advanced Auto Parts on Moreland. I keep the negative cable disconnected just in case but like I said AAA battery technician said both starter and alternator checked good. Tires were purchased about three months prior to the transmission going out. They have about 200 miles on them. I work locally and we always drove my girlfriend’s newer car whenever we went anywhere together so I didn’t drive the car often. As you can see from the photos the tires still have the little thin rubber fringe from the factory molds. Those usually dissipate after only a few hundred miles from my experience and are a good indicator as to the newness of a tire. I have looked and looked and of course I cannot find the receipt. I’m sure it’s on file at Kauffman Tire, however. So yeah, the car runs, motor is fine but could use a tune up and the oil is clean but it is old so it’ll need an oil change. But you don’t want to drive the thing anyway. Even locally, I wouldn’t try it if I were you. It may not even be possible. I only drive it from the top of my driveway and halfway down the block and park it on the street in front of my house from time to time when I need the room on my driveway but it mostly lives at the top of my driveway closest to the house. It was garaged as long as my father had it but for almost 6 years it has sat in the sun and weather. The paint on the roof is oxidizing but the hood and the rest of the car have held up pretty well. The headlights are yellowed and in need of restoration (it’s not difficult or costly) and the “chrome” plastic piece housing the emblem and making up the grill is peeling in places. The driver’s side side mirror has been broken off. Maybe a vandal, maybe a crack and cold weather and moisture played a role, I don’t really know, I came out to the car one morning and the mirror was hanging by the cable. The mirror is intact. I have all pieces. Only the bracket that attaches to the car is broken. Of course you can’t just buy this piece from Nissan you have to get the entire assembly. But you can easily source that part at a Pull Apart or any similar type junkyard for next to nothing and about ten minutes with a ratchet set and a screwdriver. I have all the hardware to put everything back together. I have $750 in new rubber and $140 in a new battery on this car as well as $200 Radar/Laser detector (much more when new), so that’s nearly $1,100 I’m throwing in toward the return of the Maxima! I have seen rebuilt transmissions on line going for as low as $450. On average they’d run around $500. If you know how to replace the transmission yourself and have shop access then this is all it’s going to cost you, plus some spark plugs, oil, filter and lube and you’re ready to cruise (or open that throttle up a little more and hang on for dear life!). If you’re like me and need a mechanic I have read on line this job being done anywhere from $800 - $1200. I can’t confirm those prices but that is what I have read on forums. Even if you just wanted a parts car or a second set of wheels and tires, you could likely make money selling bits and pieces of this car and keeping others for yourself. I think there are a lot of options here but I just do not have time to mess with any of them myself. The Kelly Blue Book Value of this car in “good” condition, I think it would be “very good” and even “excellent” in many areas but the paint and the fact that it sat for a year have affected the overall value to the point where I think “good” is the proper assessment for the car as a whole. I am NOT taking the transmission into consideration in this rating. I AM taking the transmission off of the KBB price of the car were it in running condition. So the average Private Party Value $3,489, then $1,000 is a fair price for this car. That gives you $2,489 to work with and still have spent a fair amount on the car. As you can see in the photo this car can be valued as much as $4,405 in this marketplace. So even with the busted tranny this price is more than fair.
