This car until a few weeks ago was a trade-in at a local dealership in our home state of Mississippi (see the auto-check history report link below), it was purchased with prior knowledge of a pre-existing problem (engine tap) that we had planned on fixing and keeping but have recently changed our minds with too many projects starting for 2018 already, considering that we are selling the car as a running car but has to be repaired to use! The car/wagon is loaded with all the accessories including full time all-wheel drive, jet black leather interior, 4 doors with seating for 7 passengers and bucket seats for the first two rows and bench seat in the rear, in dash navigation and Harmon Kardon sound and a vast array of electronic and safety features. The car drives and handles like a dream but the engine will need some attention before it can be a daily driver again, when purchased we assumed that the engine tap we heard was the timing chain and guides being worn and needed replaced but after further investigation we discovered that the balance shaft and sprocket which runs through the entire engine front to back is normally the problem with these particular engines when you hear that noise, in order to do this procedure the entire engine must be removed, someone mechanical can probably do the job themselves and save lots of money, there are lots of YouTube videos about this engine and this very problem, most estimate that the parts total for the repair are around $600, the issue is the labor, if you have the knowledge of doing it or no someone that works on these you are the perfect buyer, we did find post showing that if you just carry to the Mercedes dealer they want around $5k-$6k to do it, we are not 100% sure this is the problem but because of the research on internet showing this is a very common problem we have diagnosed it to be just that without actually tearing into it, if you are someone you know is capable of pulling the engine and putting back in then replacing the sprocket and repairing doesn't sound that hard just time consuming, the engine besides the tap runs great, doesn't run hot, blow oil or do anything crazy, someone took care of the car to be in it's current condition with 189k miles on it, the engine tap issue is a mistake made by Mercedes that they never admitted or offered to repair free of charge, engine, brakes, a/c-heat, electrical, etc. all work properly! Besides the engine issues the car everything else on the car works unless noted and I will compile a list of things wrong that we know about and we are selling the car with a clean-clear transferrable title along with a bill of sale. Negatives on car: 1. Both fog lights on lower valance are busted out and will need to be replaced. 2. Several rock chips in the paint on the front bumper/hood. 3. Paint coming off in two places on the bumper fiberglass around some pieces of trim. 4. Scrape and scuff marks on both front fenders. 5. Black scuff mark around back hatch with cracked plastic chrome trim piece. 6. Small door ding near passenger side door handle and one small ding in the passenger side front fender (see pics). 7. Leather starting to tear slightly on center armrest. 8. We believe the engine tapping is the balance shaft sprocket bad which causes slack in the timing chain, engine will need to be removed for repair, approximately $600 in parts repair.
