Vehicle Detail
Just in time for Christmas! As the 3rd owner, this car has been a lot of fun to cruise in over the last 7 years, but now it is time to pass it on. These MR2 Spyders are rare, as Toyota only made 28,000 of the 3rd Generation from 2000 to 2007. Definitely gets noticed and people constantly mistake it for a Porsche or Ferrari. CALIFORNIA BUYERS: SEE NOTE ABOUT SMOG. Bill of sale will state that you intend to register the vehicle outside of the state of California or you are buying it for parts. The Good: This car has had a low number of owners, drives great, is very fun. Has a direct iPhone/iPod plug in to the stereo (30 pin style, but can be changed to lightning with an adapter). Uses about 1/4th of a quart of oil between changes, which is low for this car. Has donut spare tire, jack and user manuals. Purchase includes car cover. Car is only on its third owner and has a clean Carfax report (see attached image). Overall, car is in Fair condition. The Bad: This car is in great condition for being almost 2 decades old. However, as to be expected, there are a number of issues. I'm listing all issues to the best of my knowledge: California Smog Check: Even though the car passes emission standards (in terms of exhaust by products), it fails the California Smog Check as the Check Engine Light is on. The check engine light is on due to a failed fuel pressure sensor. Last time the car passed smog (2 years ago), the mechanic replaced the fuel pressure sensor which allowed it to pass smog. However, about 2 days later the Check Engine Light came back on. The mechanic suspects the harness is shorting out the fuel pressure sensor. This ultimately is my reason for selling the car. Because of this, the car's registration is incomplete. Registration fees are paid through Jan 2018, but the car does not have an updated sticker as it will not receive one unless it passes smog. Buyer should note this car WILL NOT PASS SMOG IN CALIFORNIA in its current condition due to the check engine light. I am selling this car on ebay with the intent to sell it to a buyer out of state, where passing smog is not a condition for registration. If you are a California buyer purchasing this car, you are purchasing this car for parts, as it will not pass smog in the state of California. For a California buyer, the bill of sale will include an statement that inside the state of California this car is being sold for PARTS ONLY, and thus the seller is NOT responsible for smog certification. (Side note: California state law states that sellers are responsible for ensuring a car will pass smog. This car WILL NOT pass smog in its current state, and the seller has tried and has not been able to get it to pass smog. Therefore if you buy it in the state of California, you are buying it for parts.) If you are buy this car out of state, without the need to smog the car, the car runs great so you shouldn't have an issue. Accident History: This car has been in two accidents and three minor incidents to my knowledge. Once it spun out in a rainstorm and backed into the center interstate divider. This damager the rear bumper, and some of the frame behind the rear axle. However, there was no damage to the motor or drive train. It also had a small tree fall across the wind shield, which required replacing the windshield and the hood. Both times the incidents were professionally repaired by a body shop. The minor incidents have included two low speed run-ins while a parking lot, and getting sprayed by gravel while driving through a construction sight. Two of these three times the car was professionally repainted. One of the parking lot incidents left a small crack in the paint, which was not repaired. Tires: All tires on this car need to be replaced. Tread is at our below the tread line. Parking Brake: The parking brake no longer works on this car. I just always park it in 1st gear, which prevents it from rolling. I think just a cable adjustment may be required to get it functional. Transmission: The clutch on the transmission feels like it is starting to slip, and will likely need to be replaced at some point in the future. The clutch was previously replaced at 100k miles, so it still should have some life left in it. Engine Compartment Latch: The engine compartment latch (in the rear) used to stick. During an oil change, to get access, the latch was removed. I have left the latch removed since to provide easy access for checking the oil. I have the latch mechanism and a new cable, which come with the car. They just need to be installed. Engine: As I mentioned, I have to add about 1/4th of a quart of oil between changes, but otherwise everything has been work great. I should also note that on the exhaust, the pre-catalytic converters have been removed, to prevent a known issue where the pre-cat material can get into the engine causing failure (see full discussion on the topic here: http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=11393). The car has successfully passed smog at least twice while in my ownership with the pre-catalytic converters removed. The only issu is smog. Cosmetics: The cosmetics on this car are great, given that between the tree in the front, and the accident in the back, the whole car has been repainted. There are some scratches on the front of the car (see image). Also, in the back, there is a crack in the paint from the parking lot incident (partially concealed by the NASA meatball). Drivers seat is fairly worn (see image). The rest of the interior is in good cosmetic condition. Headlights are a little bit foggy from UV (cosmetic only, does not influence function) Top: Convertible top is in good condition. Some of the canvas is starting to crack around the edge, of the rear window but does not leak. I have noticed in extremely heavy rains, some of the drains in the bottom of the convertible pocket have gotten clogged, which causes water to pool in the pocket. However, I cleaned the drains and have not noticed the issue since. This car is sold As-Is. I have described all potential problems I am aware of above. I have done my best to accurately describe all potential issues. Unlike many listings, this should provide you with all the information so you know exactly what your are getting. Overall, this car is very fun to drive, and with proper care has a lot of life left in it. If you are buying this car out of state, with a little maintenance I have no doubt it will be great. If you are buying the car in the state of California, please be aware that the bill of sale will state that you are buying it for parts, and that the owner is NOT responsible for having it pass smog.
