1964.5 Mustang Convertible This is a very early production car, build date of 04/13/64. This car was built before the cars were released to the public, initial release date was 04/17/64 at the New York worlds fair. Car was a barn find, it was stored for 35 years when found, last time on the road was 1979. This car received a full on nut and bolt rotisserie restoration, no expense was spared, have receipts for $40,000 just in new parts. The car was completely disassembled, the whole floor and frame rails removed and replaced with a new unit built by Thoroughbred GT. This unit is built on a jig so that it is straight and true. The whole bottom side of the car from bumper to bumper is brand new. New front frame rails and wheel tubs. Car soda blasted inside and out to bare metal, then painted with epoxy primer, seam sealed and two more coats of epoxy applied. The firewall was replaced as well as the cowl and cowl side panels, the fender aprons, front core support were also replaced. The trunk filler panel the piece between the deck lid and rear window is new. The convertible top drip rail was also replaced . New torque boxes and center plate this is all the new metal on the car. The rest of the body panels are original to the car and surprisingly were rust free, no patches were welded in this car anywhere. Car is totally 100% rust free, no rust even inside the frame rails. The complete interior is new right down to the foam and batting in the seats. The motor, transmission and rear end are original to the car, all tags are present, even the carburetor tag is there. It is a true "D" code car, 289 four barrel carb car from the factory. It has power steering, power brakes that were upgraded to front disc with dual bowl master cylinder. Power convertible top. The top is new and the top frame was completely restored. All glass is original and in excellent condition all with proper date codes. Motor, Transmission, and rear end were all rebuilt. Motor was rebuilt to factory original specs, std bore, crank shaft is also std. New double roller timing set, oil pump, pistons, camshaft, lifters and pushrods installed. Heads were rebuilt with new valves, guides, springs and retainers. New three core radiator, with dessert cooler fan blade, this is a rare and hard item to find. All brake and suspension components are new. It it painted the original Poppy Red, very rare color for this car, it was not an offered color for this year Mustang, it had to be custom ordered. but this car was built before they were released so this is somewhat of a mystery. Paint is base coat clear coat, three coats of base, and seven coats of clear wet sanded between third, sixth, and seventh coats. Paint looks like glass.
