Vehicle Detail
This is a Beck 550 Spyder that was hand-built at their California factory in the mid 1980s. Overall condition is good. Please watch the video link below. This car drives very well, has a strong motor, and shifts perfectly. The motor does drip oil, like most VW engines. There paint is excellent, but there are small blemishes. This car has been driven and enjoyed. The tonneau cover is original to the car and is in fair condition. Please contact me should you have any further questions. Statement from Beck in an email: "It appears that the pictured car is an early CA built kit and would have originally been in red gelcoat, which is visible behind the gauges (they must have taped off the gauges when they painted the car silver). Very few of these were sold as a turn key car, and were intended for the end user to complete at home. There are a TON of aftermarket parts, as well as things done differently from stock or done differently form the way Chuck, Randy or my father would have done them, so I am pretty confident in saying that this car was most likely assembled at home from one of our early kits. Depending on the chassis number, the data plate may have been thinly designation of the car’s original number… The VIN number (55C…) would have been assigned to the end user, directly by their own state, and we would have never known that number, so there is no way to cross reference it back to the chassis number. Without old build records, it is impossible to tell the exact history of the car, but there are enough clues to be able to make a good guess. So in short, yes it is a Beck, no it is not factory built. It was most likely home built from a basic body and chassis package sold by my father and Chuck Beck between 1983 and 1988. It could possibly be as late as 1994 for production because we produced both CA kits and Brazilian kits between 1988 and 1994, and then CA built kits were completely discontinued in 1994. But it is definitely a CA built kit and not a Brazilian production car, evident by the lack of upgrades tot he door latches, hinges, battery box and top hardware. Someone made their own data plate and incorporated their assigned VIN number along with it." Youtube Video: 550 Spyder - YouTube Video will open in a new window [isdntekvideo]
