Vehicle Detail
The 1965 Sunbeam Tiger "Hot Rod" My name is Al Rivera, I am a broker. I have been hired to sell this vehicle. The pictures listed in this auction were taken with my digital camera and have not been photo-chopped. I am not a Sunbeam expert, however, I have spoken to a few people that own them. They have provided me with information about Sunbeams and that has been very helpful. Up for auction, is a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger "Hot Rod." This is probably the best description of the car. The body numbers suggest that it originally was an Alpine II. According to history, when the Tiger came out, a lot of people tried to get a hold of old Alpines and turn them into backyard made "Tigers." Hence, why we call this one a "Hot Rod." I wish I had receipts for all the repairs and modifications made on this car, but I don't. I am working off what I see that has been put into the car. If you are a Sunbeam Purest, than read this auction with a grain of salt, you may love it or maybe just like it, but you got to drive it! Wow, not for the faint of heart. Let's talk about this Sunbeam Survivor. It seems that most of the parts and modifications have been made in recent years. It only has about 2,100 miles on it, and it looks fun and drives great. Up front we have a Mopar Chrysler 318 V-8 with a high performance Edlebrock Carburetor. It's got the matching 727-Automatic Transmission with a GM differential. Definitely comes with a custom exhaust system including manifolds. You can see where they cut out part of the floor board, to be able to fit the automatic transmission. It has a heavy duty custom radiator installed, with electronic fans to keep the engine cool. The brakes have been replaced, front disc and rear shoes and work great. The dashboard has been changed. Comes with wide track tires, bigger wheels in the back, the wheels have been changed to lighter aluminum. It has new front and rear shocks. There is no rust at all, just a little surface rust from sitting from time to time, which I consider normal for Southern California. The engine hood is attached with four clips, one in each corner. Did note that the paint is lifting in some areas. The hard top comes off, you can see the original bows for the original soft top that are tucked away into the back of the seats, to make way for the removable hard top. The body and bumpers are straight. It comes with current California Plates. Starts up every time, and with that bright red paint, you sure get a lot of attention. Every time it gets parked, it draws a lot of attention and people are trying to figure out, just what kind of car this is. If you are looking for something different, and to have some fun with, then this might be the car for you. Wait until you drive it, wow, it wants to go. Remember, feel free to make offers on the car, anytime, and we will get back to you right away and let you know, if you're on target. A Little Snapshot of History on the Sunbeam Motorcar Putting some history together. Evidently the Sunbeam name has been around since the beginning of the twentieth century. It took on many models and nameplates over the years. The history focus is on the Sunbeam that we have in the auction today. The Sunbeam Alpine, was launched in 1959 and was a stylish two seater convertible that was powered by a four cylinder engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. The Sunbeam had respectable , but not ground breaking performance, but satisfactory for the day. The Sunbeam Tiger became the high performance version of the Rootes Group's Sunbeam Alpine. The legendary Carroll Shelby was asked to build a prototype V-8 sports car using the Sunbeam Alpine platform. They were able to tuck into the engine compartment one of Ford's 4261cc V-8 engines which was a toned down engine, but similar to what the Cobra used. The new custom Alpine was called the "Tiger" and only 7,085 were produced during the 1965 to 1967 period and their engines would produce about 164 horsepower. While Sunbeam did manufacture a lot of Alpines and many Alpine parts can still be found, but the Tiger is a little more unique, and parts are a little harder to find. As some of you may know, the Tiger got popular. Amateurs, sprang up trying to cash in on the Tiger excitement and were buying up Alpines during the 1970's, and trying to convert them to Tigers. Because some of those counterfeit cars came into existence, the International Registry of Sunbeam Tigers was formed. Also, joining their ranks, the Sunbeam Tigers Owners Association, to work as an authentication committee. How To Get This "Hot Rod" In Your Garage: The Terms!
