Vehicle Detail

In December of 2014, Airkewld was invited to the 2015 Ultimate VW Build off. We decided to build a VW Based DunBuggy Kit Car that was super low and race inspired. We purchased a buggy from a private party that ended up being pretty bad. The chassis was cracked everywhere once we completely dismantled it. Once we ammonia dipped the chassis, we decided that this chassis was not the beginning of a winner. We took a clean titled 1963 VW Beetle Chassis, completely stripped it of everything. We ammonia dipped the chassis for 2 weeks and it came out amazing. We cut 15" out of the center of it and welded it back seamlessly and metal finished it so you could not tell where it was done. We purchased Wolfsburg West Pan halves and cut them into a jig saw pussle so that all the indentions that were pressed in them would look factory but 15" shorter. Welded them together and metal finished them seamlessly. We shave the eBrake handle, reinforced the clutch tube, built new shift linkage and narrowed the rear end 6" from stock. We then powder coated the chassis Gold Vein. Up front, we created a Friction-Shock beam that is 6" narrower than stock. We chromed the front control arms, installed a set of drop spindles and installed a set of 4 Piston Wilwood Calipers along with Gold Anodized BAD Series Brakes. Every inch of this PRObuilt front end is either anodized gold, ARP stainless bolts, powder coated Gold vein or polished. We used German Tie rod ends, king pins and link pins and a PRObuilt TRW steering box. We set the front up with a custom set of Billet Specialties wheels measuring 15x3.5 and hoosier drag slicks. The dics master cylinder was installed and stainless lines with black anodized -3AN tube nuts and sleeves were bent to OCD specifications. We decided to do something incredibly trick and bring both the fuel line and the brake line into the interior of the buggy and utilize stainless steel hardlines and billet brackets to create almost a cockpit feel with precision bent lines and fasteners. The pedals were rebuilt, polished, chromed and detailed to look dead nuts sexy. A black Mamba classic short shifter was installed to give it a retro feel. The interior sport a pair of custom buggy bucket seats that were expertly covered by Empire Auto Upholstery. They sport a custom seat spine on the back along with out bitchin billet seat belt reinforcements. Racing lap belts were then installed. The dash sports Autometer gauges in a carbon fiber dial along with a push button start. A custom steering system was installed and is nice, tight and great looking. The gauge was bent by Ken at Buggyworld and built, fitted and welded by the PRO's at Airkewld. It features a t-top design that has a twin rear tube that is one of a kind. We even built the windshield right into it for a clean, less bulky look. Some trick oblique billet mirrors will install on the cage as well. The rear suspension was narrowed 6", utilizing the factory 63 torsion bars and early oval Adjustable Spring plates that have a 3" snot on them. We custom built a 1.25" transaxle raise kit and bolted a 3.44 R&P Aluminum Rhino Case equipped Transaxle with a Billet super diff, RIm polished gears, ERCO gear stacks and ERCO 3" Narrowed Chromoly Axles. The rear shocks are Billet Adjustable Fox Racing shocks and stops with another set of Gold Anodized BAD Series set of Disc Brakes using 2 piston Wilwood calipers. Stainless hard line and soft lines make this install immaculate. Above the trans and attached to the factory chassis mounts, a Skeleton was created to hold the Oil Cooler, Oil Filter, MSD Ignition, Battery, Fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel regulateor and coil. It was built as to look factory and perfect with out drilling and attaching to the body. A billet starter, and dry cell battery with billet battery mount were installed and fitted with custom cables. No bolt, nut, fitting or bracket was left untouched or custom is some fashion. The rear wheels are 15x9.5 Double bead lock wheels with 26" slicks from Hoosier. A new wiring loom was fabricated from back to front that includes quick disconnects when doing maintenance on the MAD Manx. Each terminal was heat shrunk to avoid corosion and loomed together as if it was a factory harness. The body has been soda blasted, smoothed, shaved and reinforced. It was painted with a black based and gold flake on top. After several coats of clear, the strips on the hoop were painted in a satin black. A custom Gas Cap was designed and casted by Dave Venell designs to match the Airkewld Logo. Billet black Laser Star headlights were installed along with a custom one-off bumper with a 12" Light bar in the factory license plate indention. The engine is a custom built 2609cc long block from Ken Skiba at Buggyworld. Lot's of hours went into this long block, so much as the long block it self has about $10,000 in it. On the exterior, anything that could be built in Billet aluminum was and then was anodized gold. MST valve covers and one-off cross drilled serpentine belt system and alternator stand. 48 Weber IDA's were built and prepped by Ken as well installing progressions ports and tuning them for exact specifications. A one-off Exhaust was built for this MAD Manx that shoots fire, sounds loud and looks amazing! Every detail of this car is amazing. Stainless steel hardline fuel system was anodized in alternating colors, Billet throttle tube, Chromed acorn nuts through out the carbs, Vintage speed crank style linkage is amazing. All the AN fittings for the oil system and vent system are alternating between gold and black with silver hose. Even the hose separators are gold anodized. You will be pressed to find one cleaner and more cool. This car has had over $30k invested in cash, over 400 hours in labor that would put a price tag of about $52,500.00 if we were to build one like it for a client. The starting bid is $1 with a reserve.
