Vehicle Detail

This is a nice driver-condition 64 Monza ragtop. It has recent bodywork and paint that make it an eye-catcher wherever it goes. While very nice, the paint isn't perfect, since the car is driven. Some minor chips and scratches that are a part of everyday use are there. Interior is also very nice, but again, not perfect. No major rips or tears in seats, and door panels are better than they should be for this age. Steering wheel freshly painted and carpet is only a couple of months old. This is a typical old Corvair that looks better than most. The motor puffs a bit upon startup, and the lifters rattle a little when cold. The power glide automatic shifts fine, though there is a slight hesitation when the car is put into reverse. It always backs up, just takes a couple of seconds. Car did this when I bought it, and it hasn't gotten any better or worse in my time driving it. The spots where these cars rust have had some work with sheet metal and fiberglass by a previous owner. Their work wasn't what I would call professional, but there are no gaping holes either. Most of the perforation was covered with fiberglass due to small size of spots. Only the driver's floorboard has had metal replaced. Front trunk has also had some fiberglass applied.Suspension and brakes on the car seem to be fine, though I'm sure its been awhile since they were rebuilt. All brake shoes, some rubber hoses and master cylinder appear to be newer than other components. Car goes down the road nice and straight at 70 mph, but the four wheel, non-power drum brakes do remind you how far brake technology has come in 50 years.Corvairs are like British Sports cars. If someone tells you they don't leak, either they are lying to you or the crankcase is dry. This one doesn't leak excessively, but if you don't start it or drive it every couple of days, the Powerglide trans will protest by marking its territory. Keep it limbered up, and this isn't a problem. When the car was painted, several of the exterior brightwork pieces were replaced with NOS and aftermarket pieces. Grille, headlamp bezels, taillamp bezels and lenses, and some emblems were replaced to give the old girl some new bling. The bumpers were not replated, and are decent but not show quality. All lights work as intended. So what doesn't work? The horn works when it feels like it, which tends to vary by day. The radio doesn't work, though I believe the radio head itself is fine. The dash speaker that was in the car when I bought it dissolved into dust when I removed it, and I just never replaced it. I believe a new speaker would probably bring the radio back to life, but I can't guarantee it. Being a Florida car, the car also lacks a heater. Someone long ago removed the lower engine tins that hold all of the dripping oil that usually gets blown into the cab of a Corvair when you engage the system, so consider it a safety feature that they aren't there. The actual heater box and fan are there, and the fan works, but in order to make the heater functional, you would have to replace the lower pans, and most of the fabric hoses in the cab. More trouble than its worth for where I drive the car. In the last six months, the motor got a new distributor, coil and two carbs rebuilt by Wolf Enterprises. She runs, starts and cruises nicely. All glass is intact with no breaks, top is in good condition, and rear window is nice and clear. A worn but fully useable top boot also included. As for rubber, all tires are in excellent condition. Weatherstripping is a mixed bag. Some of it is very good or nearly new, while other pieces, such as around the vent windows and windshield, appear to be quite old. Odometer shows 15500 miles. I'm sure its at least the second time around, and maybe even more. On a 51 year old car, anything is possible and likely probable. In short, its a nice driver that has brought home a trophy at every car show I have taken it to this summer. Will it need some more work? Of course it will. Its 51 years old! If you expect to roll across the lawn at Pebble Beach with this car, fantasize elsewhere. Its never going to be a 100 point car, but it wins darn near as many trophies!I have done my best to be as honest as possible with the description, but it is an internet listing. I'm sure I have left things out that a new buyer will find. This isn't intentional, its just a fact of life. If you are anywhere near Tampa Bay and would like to look before bidding, I welcome the opportunity to show the car. If, on the other hand, you are someone who expects to buy the car for next to nothing, and then badger me incessantly for months about every flaw you find, do us both a favor and look elsewhere. THE CAR IS SOLD AS IS, WHERE IS, AND THERE IS NO WARRANTY REAL OR IMPLIED. Refunds are also not going to be forthcoming. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer, though I will cooperate to best of my ability to help in any way possible on my end. I have bought and sold cars on eBay since its inception, and I know how to get it done. Someone will almost certainly ask me if they can drive the car home to Outer Mongolia or someplace even farther from Florida. The answer is I don't know. Its an old car. It might get you there, and it might not get you to the end of the block. The car has never stranded me, but even a new car can quit on you when you least expect it. I would plan on shipping it if you live very far away.
