Vehicle Detail
For sale: 1973 Ford F250 4x4 "High boy" Wyoming ranch truck, running and driving complete rig in restorable condition. I have an out-of-state buddy who flew into Cody, WY and drove it 300 miles to Helena, MT. He subsequently found and bought his dream truck, (1976 Highboy in ginger/white) in Spokane, so this truck is up for grabs. It's had a typical western life of hauling fence posts, hay bales, firewood, and dead elk. It's got some of the normal Hiboy rust, but not the sitting-at-the-bottom-of-a-lake rot you see on the eastern and midwest trucks. While no minty survivor, it's a decent, complete truck with the higher option Ranger trim that's already been upgraded to the top dog 460 engine, and was originally a factory A/C truck. For sale with NO RESERVE. I'll do my best to describe the truck below: Exterior: Driver quality as shown in the pics. Ok for trips to the Home Depot with the wife or coffee shop with the guys, but definitely would need repaint to look really nice. Color is "Medium Ginger Metallic". Rust appears to be limited to the normal area over the rear wheels on both sides, and one spot in the driver side sill /rocker area of the cab where mud packed in and held moisture. This part of the country is extremely arid and we just don't see major rot/cancer and frame rust is unheard of. Sand, not salt, is used on the roads and that helps too. Truck has typical dents and dings from a lifetime of use, but it's all very fixable if you want to do a restoration. It had a visor on it at one time and there are mounting holes for that. Moldings have many dings but no pitting. Windshield is new. Grille surround is decent with no major damage, so there's $550 you don't have to spend. SEE ADDITIONAL PICS IN LINK BELOW. Interior: Driver quality, with replacement aftermarket carpet and door panels that would need to be upgraded for show. Dash has a few holes and cracks under mat. Seat is not original to the truck but is the correct era and will need re-cover and foam on the driver side. Most everything seems to work including horn. Speedometer works but is slow, may have wrong driven gear. Gauge bezel is faded but complete nice gauge bezel will come with the truck. Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives. As per above, just made a 300 mile trip but there are typical issues for an old truck that will need to be attended to. Original 360 was upgraded to 78 truck 460 with bigger cam, Performer carb, and dual point distributor. Sounds beefy and pulls hard. Has a noticeable oil leak at the front of the motor, appears to be front cover area. My friend used a quart of oil on the 300 mile trip up. He had the front end aligned and the front wheel bearings packed before he left (have reciept) and had no issues, but I can hear the heel of one brake shoe dragging on a front drum, so that will need to be dealt with. He also had full new exhaust installed. Truck had some fancy tires/wheels that he put on his new 76 F250, so I put these original Highboy rims and correct period 7.50-16 bias traction deep-lug tires on. They look cool, but like all bias tires, they drive and ride poorly compared to modern radials. I'm 100 percent sure you could trade them to a vintage truck nut with a Napco or Power Wagon for a set of modern radials if you're going to drive the truck. Battery is dated 2012 and was starting it fine but I came out to a dead battery the other day - charged it up and it's holding a charge. Tested for parasitic drain and currently not showing one, but I installed a cutout on the negative post just in case. Factory A/C truck but compressor is gone, and I don't have it. I tested the transfer case and drove it in 4 high and 4 low and it worked fine. My buddy used both fuel tanks on the trip up and they both worked. Pricing/Misc: I've watched these High boys, and it seems that it takes about $15k to get a really nice one now. Most of the ones I see for $6k-$8k are quickie MAACO resprays with the sellers screaming "rustfree survivor!" in all caps in the ads. That's not the case here - what you see is what you get. Don't expect a minty survivor, and even though my buddy drove it up here, I wouldn't plan to fly in and drive the truck home. Low cost shipping to is available and probably less expensive than fixing an East Coast or Midwest tetanus truck. Title is clear and in my friend's name, ready for you to sign as purchaser. Buyer should get insurance when funds are sent. Outdoor storage is available for 30 days, after that a $100 per month fee will be charged. Link to additional pics including underside, I will add pics as my internet connection allows: http://s261.photobucket.com/user/burgundyamx/library/73F250?sort=3&page=1 GOOD LUCK! Keep in mind that with all cars and trucks, THEY LOOK BETTER IN PICTURES THAN IN PERSON. This is not a minty creampuff, just a driver you could do a restoration on and IT IS NOT PERFECT BY ANY MEANS.
