Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my 1991 Jaguar XJS Coupe, 5.3L V12, Classic Collection. I'm assuming if youre reading this, you know a bit about these cars. So I'll dispense with the typical general descriptions written for these cars when new, and get to the details you care about. This is an honest and fair assessment of the car. Please ask any additional questions and i will be as thorough as possible. [MORE PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST, INCLUDING MORE INTERIOR SHOTS] THE GOOD: No Rust: There is no rust on any structural elements. No rust bubbling under the paint anywhere. No rust under the mats. No rust in the trunk floor. There is no rust.Color: British Racing Green over tan. This is the best color combination for jaguars of this vintage. This should be the ONLY color for jaguars. :) Color was called brooklands green during these years. touch up pens and paint are provided with codes for future orders. Sport Seats: 1989 saw the introduction of "sport seats" in the XJS. These seats have additional side bolstering, keep you held firmly in place when on those winding country roads. This '91 has the sport seats. [Also note that in 1989, regulations mandated the use of passive restraint seatbelts. These were the little electrical seatbelt connectors that moved along the door frame. These break in jaguars, and there are no replacement parts available. This car does NOT have these.]Leather: The leather on the front seats is impeccable. The seats were reupholstered in the not too distant past. The leather is soft and supple.Headliner: is recently replaced with appropriate felt liner. Not sagging anywhere. Electronics: All of the electronics on the car are operating as they should: electric windows, cruise control, seat warmers (yes, seat warmers on a 25yo car!), electric door and trunk locks, rear defog, radio antenna. All fuses and relays were replaced ~2 years ago. Switch connectors were all sanded and copper grease applied.Headlamps: Headlamps were replaced from original "quad lamps" to the single piece units that the car was originally designed with. Original quad lamps are not provided with the car, but these can be found easily for sale on ebay or other sites. The weak incandescent bulbs were replaced with an aftermarket HID kit. These lamps, throw a nice white light, 4300K, not the blue you see sometimes. Can be quickly restored to original incandescent bulbs, as the kit is plug-and-play. Original wiring provided.Rubber under the Hood: Fuel hoses, including injector hoses, engine harness, coolant hoses, and other rubber bits under the hood have been replaced, and relocated to areas where they are not affected by heat from the engine.Electric fans: The previous owner installed electric fans from a Buick. These are controlled by a set of switches and resistors mounted on the front bumper, behind the grill."GROWLER" Cold Air Intakes: Car has 3 inch steel tube intakes with K&N cylindrical air filters. These come from www.v12performance.com and cost $350 - $450. They should add a few HP due to better breathing compared to the stock air cleaner boxes, but really they just give the car a nice throaty growl when using the gas pedal.Alternator: replaced with a standard GM model summer 2014Starter: Heavy original starter motor replaced with light-weight gear reduction starter in winter 2015. The gear reduction starter requires less current to get engine started.Gas tank: the gas tank sprang a leak, common on these cars as they get older. The entire tank was replaced in the winter of 2014. Air conditioning: The AC system was updated to r134a last year. New, lighter, Sanden compressor installed Fall, 2013. It blows very cold when not at a stand-still in summer heat and traffic. The center vent was replaced with a vent from a newer car. The 1991 and prior cars only had two small portions of the vent which had adjustable direction, and a large immoveable piece in themiddle. The newer version, currently on the car has two large, moveable sections. Much more useful than the older version.Asteroid Wheels: the wheels were updated to 7-spoke, 18 inch wheels from a 2001 Jaguar XJR. These 18x9 wheels (and tires) provide a clear upgrade in handling from the softness and vagueness apparent in the original 15 inch wheels. This is very noticeable when at highway speeds. The wheels require use of a 1/4inch spacer for the front, and there is no rubbing, or interference with suspension components. The wheels are quite rare, and worth a bit if you are interested in sourcing a set of original 15 inch wheels. The spare is an original 15 inch "lattice" type wheel.Tires: The car is currently fitted with Michelin X-Ice-3 tires. These are snow and ice tires. I do not recommend using the car in the snow here on the east coast where salt is used and will quickly cause the body to develop rust. I purchased the tires when in Idaho with the car in March, as I needed a snow tire for obvious reasons. They do not use salt for melting road ice in Idaho. I've never refit summer or all-season tires, as these have A LOT of tread left, and I have no other use for them. I paid ~$800 for just the tires.Rear anti-roll bar: These were added and removed from factory models, several times over the course of XJS production. This 1991 did not have an anti-roll bar originally. A 3/4 inch bar was fitted by the previous owner, and I'm told vastly improved control on twisty roads.Stereo: The original tape deck head unit with trunk mounted CD-changer was replaced with a Kenwood BT-562u, Bluetooth unit. Car has recently updated speakers all around, and power amplifier located in the passenger footwell. It sounds great. And Bluetooth operates as it should with remote microphone.Classic CollectionLeather transmission shift knob. replaced with burl wood knob as seen in photos. original will be provided. Contrast dark brown piping on seats. Gold "growler" badge on hood. standard models received a dark grey or pewter hood badge. ) THE BAD Oil Leak: The car is leaking oil from the rear of the right bank valve cover. This is a common leak at what is known as the "half-moon seal." There are many write ups available on how to permanently fix this leak. Requires ~1 qt every 300 miles. The v12 uses conventional 15w50 oil. Not the super expensive synthetic oil.ATF leak: The transmission pan gasket is currently leaking. It could require a new gasket, or just tightening of the bolts. The transmission is a TH400 3 speed. These are very common, and gasket & filter kits are available at nearly any nationwide auto parts store.Coolant leak: There is a slight coolant leak from the radiator. It begins leaking ~1 hr after the car is shut down. It loses about a pint to a quart each time. I've been topping up every time I start. Odometer: the odometer stopped working last spring at 108k miles. I've put an additional 2k - 2.5k miles on it since then. The culprit is likely a failed plastic gear in the odometer mechanism (speedo still works). Replacement of the mechanism is a simple part switch. Requires removal of the instrument pod, but not removal of the dash. Electrics for fans: two capacitors on the electric fan mechanism have failed and need replacement. Simple replacement with capacitors available from radio shack or other electronics supply house. I was waiting to have the coolant leak sorted before getting to this. The car is currently wired to turn on fans when the car is on. The engine coolant temp stays cool, within normal range or below, when running. THE UGLY Paint: the car deserves a re spray. If only for the front, and trunk lid. There are various scratches and knicks on the hood and front fender. The trunk lid held a wing before. I removed the wing as I thought it detracted from the lines of the rear buttresses. The attachment points for the wing still need to be addressed. Chrome trim: most of the chrome trim was painted black when I purchased this car. The black paint is flaking a bit on the trim around the windows. I have spare cans of this trim paint and will provide them with the car. Chrome bumper "blades": the chrome on the bumpers was also painted black. I'm not sure if the reason was that the chrome is fading on the left rear and center portions. I only noticed this after I removed the black paint. All other sections are shiny and corrosion free. Interior wood: the "ski slope" veneer was cracking beyond what could be assumed as acceptable. So I took all of the veneer off of the ski skope, and put on a brushed aluminum vinyl wrap. I also wrapped the wood on the other dash pieces. This vinyl can be easily removed and replaced with a wood veneer kit, or another type of vinyl, or simply left as is. Shipping and Transportation: If you can not pick the vehicle up in PA or have it transported to you, I will consider driving the car to you, for a transportation fee including my travel back. this would only happen after receipt of funds. and we must speak via telephone to arrange these details.
