Vehicle Detail
For sale: 1973 Dodge Challenger 340 Rallye DRIVER QUALITY car, numbers matching original Rallye red car with build sheet. I bought this car last year from a local friend and since then I've used it for Cruise Night duties and casual driving, and it's been a blast. He purchased the car in the Midwest in the early 90's and drove it out to Montana, where it has been for the last 20 plus years. The car had an amateur restoration in 1992 and some rust repair, including partial quarter panels, and it still looks presentable for casual cruising today. NOT suitable for serious show duty, but a great driver. Use as is and enjoy at entry level price, or invest the money (a lot of money) and take it to the next level. Pretty darn correct car other than it left the factory with white top and seats and they were changed to black - see build sheet. Core support and cowl numbers match, engine numbers match, has replacement trans but original numbers matching trans case will be included. I've owned many Mopars, including 426 Hemi and 440-6 cars, and this little red coupe gets as many thumbs up and comments at gas stations as any of them. I recently purchased a very high quality and very expensive 71 Roadrunner, and it's time for this car to move to it's next caretaker. Exterior: Looks great to the casual observer, paint has good shine and this car really pops out in the sunshine. I actually tied for first place with it at a local car show that was popular vote. People absolutely love this car. Serious car guys will find plenty of flaws. Car was redone 20 plus years ago and has been stored inside since. Paint was an inexpensive job, and it's wavy in low light conditions - just wasn't blocked and guide coated and blocked again properly. Vinyl top is in good condition, chrome is only fair with bumpers dull and some minor pitting. As far as rust goes, there are some very small blisters along back edge of trunk, by corner of rear window, one on driver fender and one on passenger door. Car had partial rear quarters replaced, but not inners, and up inside behind rear wheels you can see where the inners were not replaced. Replacement quarter sections back then didn't have the proper flange for rear valance so it's spot welded on. Floors look good with some repairs done. The car appears to have had the typical lower body Challenger rust, with the typical repairs that would have been done back in the day. If you look inside from door at lower front fenders, you can tell they had some corrosion and were sandblasted, rustproofed, and painted. Trunk deck upper rear back edge underneath shows seam sealer that's probably covering repair, and trunk floor has surface rust. That said, the car looks good from 10 feet, and I'd say that since it was repainted 20 plus years ago, the few small blisters it has now are all you're going to see going forward if you want to just drive it and not restore it. Original Rallye wheels are in good condition as are tires. Glass is good and windshield is new. Weatherstrips were not replaced at the time of paint and are not new and are looking tired. Overall presentable and ready to go for the rest of this summer. Interior: Good driver quality. Door panels, headliner, carpet all good. Console in good condition.Dash has a few cracks under dashmat as shown. Original white seats were dyed black and new cloth inserts installed. Most interior items working, including lights, door buzzer, heater, wipers, etc and has a good sounding Sony stereo. Speedo works but needle end is broken. Tach is non-op, haven't looked into it. Gauges work but oil pressure gauge works intermittently. One air vent knob under dash is broken off. Overall nice looking for casual cruising to the Steak and Shake or Dairy Queen. Mechanical: Original 340 Magnum starts, runs, pulls hard, and trans shifts fine. Doesn't heat, no major leaks or smoke. I believe engine and trans have been rebuilt at some point, but not anything recent. As mentioned above, engine is numbers matching, trans isn't but original numbers trans case will be included. Has Edelbrock carb but original Thermoquad will be included. One thing I don't have are the original exhaust manifolds. When I got the car, I took it to a professional mechanic and had the following work done: new gas tank and sender, new battery, tune up and new electronic module and distributor electronics. Only issue mechanic could find were leaking rear axle seal on driver rear that will need attention someday, and a strange vibration that is noticeable at times. Not sure what the cause, but it wasn't bad enough for me to spend a bunch of money chasing down. If you're the anal type, it will probably bother you - but then again if you're that type you need to be looking at another car. Just know that it's there and it isn't horrible but noticeable at certain speeds. Pricing/Misc: Prices for these cars have gotten stupid again after a brief respite during the Great Recession. Hagerty lists a number 4 condition car at about $13k. If you want to know the top end of the market, look at Barrett Jackson Scottdale 2015 lot 969. That super nice Petty Blue car went for $47,300 with buyers commission, I was standing there. I guess that leaves you enough room to buy this one reasonably and re-do the car. I'm a bit worried that an unscrupulous dealer or flipper may try to buy this car cheap and resell without full disclosure - since that has happened to me in the past. I'll be keeping a copy of this auction indefinitely for reference if subsequent buyers contact me. After the sale, I can store the car outside for up to 30 days free, after that $100 per month storage will be due. Keep in mind that with all cars and trucks, THEY LOOK BETTER IN PICTURES THAN IN PERSON. This is not a minty creampuff, just a decent driver you could do a restoration on and IT IS NOT PERFECT BY ANY MEANS.
