Vehicle Detail
It starts right up. It idles well. It drives. It is NOT a car to drive home. This car is a single-owner w114 coupe with some very rare options, and it IS a car worth restoring (in my opinion). I got this coupe drivable by replacing transmission cooler lines, and patching sections of the fuel lines. I have been softening the old leather with Leatherique , and it is softening nicely. The car starts when you turn the key and runs nicely. The rear brake calipers do drag though, and should probably be replaced (as should all brake hoses and fluids). Highlights:- starts right up, runs and drives- all windows and the power sunroof work and seal well - very rare and expensive w114 options. See below for more detail. - single owner vehicle never re-titled since 1972.- excellent chrome and anodized aluminum trim, not that hazy oxidized stuff that takes massive effort to strip and polish. - good looking paint- pretty excellent interior and NO CRACKS in dash.- stainless exhaust - rust free trunk with original trunk liner in great shape Title: I HAVE NO TITLE FOR THIS CAR THAT I DO LEGALLY OWN. 114.023.12.008664The last time a title was known to be seen on this car was when it was purchased in 1972 in Pennsylvania. The car has NEVER been re-titled. I have been waiting on the son-in-law of the deceased original owner to produce a death certificate and get a duplicate title to avoid having to go through one of those title services to get me a title. I would prefer to NOT have to go through a no-title state like Georgia which is what I believe the title services would do. Since I have other projects, since making this car run and drive, I have decided to wait for a title to do any more work. I regularly communicate with the son-in-law of the previous owner, who is also a classic car guy. Why is this car special? Rare options (still on the car) include:- white steering wheel- white leather interior (with no significant holes, but some small rips in the perforation in the rear seats).- sunroof- rare two-tone paint scheme- Becker five speaker stereo system Some reasons this car should be restored:- all the bright work is impeccable for its age. This car was loved and appears to have loved in a garage most of its life. It was certainly driven though. - all stainless exhaust- good paint- no cracks in dash, only minor rips in the speaker grill cover- rare options mentioned above- even the tires have tons of tread.- original maintenance books and data card What's wrong with it?- no title, bill of sale only (currently). I have considered paying the ~$500 to get a title, but the son-in-law of the deceased owner says he will get a title every time I ask if I should just pay the title service. It's been almost a year now.- the rear brake calipers need replacing. They are rusty and seized. - alternator is not charging the battery. I have a tested used alternator to include with the sale. This is the next thing (#2) I would fix with this car. - there is a small drop leak in the fuel return line it creates a 1" to up to 4+" circle below the back of the driver rocker. This is the next thing (#3) I would fix with this car. New fuel lines are the correct solution, but POR-15 over this area of the fuel line should buy the new owner some time. - the windshield needs to be replaced, but included with the sale is a good replacement windshield with a seal. This is the next thing (#4) I would fix with this car. - there is a dent above the back window, probably from the previous owner putting stuff on top of the covered car when stored in his garage for over a decade. It looks like this could be pushed out from the inside if you can gain access via the headliner.- there is significant rust / rot in the driver rocker. Cutting and welding required in my opinion. Then POR-15, Primer and rattle can paint here should be fine. I think it would be acceptable to have rattle can paint on the rockers.- there are a few small rust hole spots in the floors. Cutting and welding required in my opinion. Then POR-15, Primer and rattle can paint here should be fine. - there are rust bubbles around the rear driver wheel that will ultimately need attention. This is an area I would want professionally painted, and might just ignore the bubbles while enjoying the car.- there are certainly other small problems to address, and probably the radio and horn fuses need to be checked, but I honestly haven't gotten to those points with this car.
