Vehicle Detail

This 1982 Honda is currently owned by a mature senior. The previous owner was also a professional mature senior. It has been adult ridden and very well maintained throughout it's entire life and has been always stored inside. The Interstate model has an additional front brake caliper for better braking. It also has the original Hondaline fairing, trunk and saddlebags. There is a lockable compartment on the fairing along with locks on the trunk and saddlebags. All are keyed the same and are all in excellent working condition. The saddlebags are removable and have carrying handles to take them with you. The Gl500 is convertible from a single seater to a two seater. The trunk has an optional set-back which moves it back behind the passenger's back. The system provides more seating space without sacrificing carrying capacity. About 25 years ago I had another identical 1982 Silverwing. I accumulated 82000 trouble free miles on it while traveling the lower 48, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Canada (West side) and throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador. I believe I was probably the first cyclist to cross the newly cut Trans Labrador highway with my ten year old son on the back. Foolishly, I got rid of it at 82000 miles. Twenty some years later I decided to acquire another vintage touring bike. Despite the big name (Brand X), it was troublesome, unreliable, and very expensive to operate. So I got rid of it and found another GL500I in excellent condition. I completed many, many upgrades and services to prep it for an extended trip. It already was equipped with KC Highlites. I added new fork seals along with rubber slider boots to protect the seals from encrusted bugs. I added additional rearview mirrors to the Hondaline fairing and replaced the master cylinder. The carbs have been rebuilt and I replaced the choke cable. Both tires were replaced with new Dunlop Touring Elite II tires. Engine guards and driver and passenger floorboards were added. The previous owner had added a console with additional gauges. Included are a voltmeter, quartz clock, compass, and outside air temperature thermometer. All are lighted and work perfectly. All other Honda gauges and lights work properly. A brand new Yuasa battery was installed in March of this year. A throttle lock and wrist rest were added. The odometer currently shows 47073 miles but that is NOT CORRECT. When I purchased the Honda it had only 14000 miles on it. The trip odometer would not reset so I replaced the speedometer assembly with one with a good functioning trip odometer. My wife and I completed a major trip on the bike and accumulated just short of 5000 miles. So actually, the bike has only about 19000 miles on it. I'm not sure of the precise numbers, but I will certify that it has less than 20,000 miles on the machine. That is a very low number for a GL500 of this vintage. Years ago I recall meeting someone who had over 150,000 miles on their bike with no engine repairs. These bikes are bulletproof if you ride sensibly and do regular maintenance. I also replaced the small Honda oil filter with an automotive type filter of much larger capacity. It works well and the filters are readily available at any auto parts store. The GL500 is a V twin similar to a Guzzi. Except that it is water cooled and has a shaft drive. In addition, it has an air adjustable suspension for varying loads. For added comfort, I added a gel pad under the seat upholstery. This Gl500 is also equipped with a trailer hitch and appropriate, functional wiring for a trailer hookup. Also included is a small cargo trailer with very good, high speed tires including a spare. I repacked the bearings with high temperature black molybdenum grease and had a trouble free 5000 mile trip. The trailer tracks straight and runs true. You don't even... (* No clichés here! ) Lights all work well and there is even a small carrier on the tongue for a small ice chest. The trailer is also included in this sale and also has a clear title. On the trip someone told that I couldn't ride two up and pull a trailer on a 500. They obviously did not know this machine. I've done it twice in my life and the engine does not overheat and is not lugging or struggling. Everywhere I go people stop me to admire this beautiful Silverwing. They have a reputation for being one of the best built Hondas ever made! I love this Honda. But at 66, I was just diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. That means bone on bone vertebrae with arthritic spurs and that translates into no more long distance touring. It is time to let someone else enjoy this vintage, increasingly popular, Silverwing. Fly into Gulfport/Biloxi (GPT), take delivery and drive anywhere in the Western Hemisphere! It floats down the road but it will not float on the water. So if you plan to tour the Eastern Hemisphere, you'll have to arrange for shipping first. I just located the speedometer/ trip odometer that I previously removed. Now the trip odometer seems to be working fine and can be reset easily. I don't know what the problem was before but I am including this original set with the auction. Reinstall it if you like, but remember there are 5000 miles in addition to the 14276 on the old odometer. Please see the newly added picture of it in my listing.
