1965 OLDSMOBILE F-85 DELUXE ORIGINAL PAINT - 106,263 MILES Here is a bit of history about my 1965 Oldsmobile F-85 Deluxe. First of all, I am very fortunate to be only the second owner of this car. The original owner purchased the car new in 1965 from an Oldsmobile/Buick dealership in Northern Georgia. The woman who owned it clearly loved, maintained and cared for the car very much. In fact, she even signed her name on at least (3) different pages of the owner’s manual! When I purchased the car it only had 102,751 miles on it. It was clearly in overall great condition for a 45 year old vehicle evidenced by its appearance and the sound of the engine. I purchased the Olds in 2010 from a broker just after the car was traded in at the same dealership where it was originally purchased. He told me the car had been parked in a garage for the past (37) years before the family traded it in. I had it shipped to my home in central New York and I was surprised to find it was in better condition than I had imagined. I was amazed the paint was original and there was not one dent or ding in the body! In fact, it still had the original bias-ply tires on it. As soon as the driver unloaded it from his trailer - I drove it around the block without any plates on it – I couldn’t wait! The first thing I noticed was how quiet, smooth and powerful the engine was. And a great exhaust note to boot! The car was not altered, modified or changed in any way from the day it was driven off the showroom floor. I was thrilled! After registering it, the first thing I did was take it to my mechanic. He’s an “old school” kind of guy who has worked for a GM dealership for over (35) years and knows how to work on a carburetor. And that’s rare in this day and age. The following is what I had repaired or replaced over the past few years:1) Complete tune up - oil change - lube chassis, hinges and door locks - replaced all fluids - checked tires, battery, cable connections and underbody for any leaks - checked belts, hoses, steering components, drive axle and exhaust - inspected brakes, wheel bearings, suspension, lights, alignment, etc. Some hoses and belts were replaced. Resurfaced rear drums and replaced brake shoes - replaced rear wheel cylinders - repacked front wheel bearings - replaced left front directional light socket and right rear back-up light socket - replaced fuel filter - aligned front end and NYS inspection ($492.11 - receipt included).2) New Firestone P205/75 R14 whitewall tires all the way around. The tires are still in “like new” condition and have no dry rot. In fact, the warranty is still valid ($379.54 - receipt and warranty included).3) Had the body of the car professionally reconditioned and detailed at a premier body shop in Rochester. Including a light wet sand, polish, hand wax and matching paint touch up with an artist brush ($356.40 – receipt included).4) Replaced battery and thermostat ($126.54 – receipt included).5) Replaced motor mounts - replaced rear brake hoses - performed complete brake system flush - checked and topped off master cylinder ($299.15 - receipt included).6) Four new (special order) Monroe gas shocks ($452.80 – receipt included).7) Fresh oil change and lube annually and a few other small items replaced or repaired along the way. EXTERIOR: All of the paint on the car is original from the factory. With the exception of the hand touch up of rock chips and scratches done by the auto detailer. It shows well - though there is some slight fading on the bonnet and the boot. The body has no dents, rust or body rot. The fenders, fender walls, quarter panels, deck lid, floor panels, rocker panels, doors, door sills, etc. are all solid and rust free! For 1965, this model was designed with a concave rear window. Water tended to collect around the lower window seal. Oldsmobile found this to be a design flaw and corrected it for the 1966 model year. It had been repaired and sealed in the past with some sort of black rubber cement and it did not look good – I had the auto detailer remove all the rubber sealant around the rear window frame and touch it up with matching paint (see photos). That said; if you want to restore this to a show car – you would need to replace the metal panel between the rear window and the trunk. Also, moisture did make its way into the trunk over time and the trunk floor is rusty. I did not try to cover this up by painting it (see photo). Always garaged, so no moisture has made its way in there since I’ve owned it. Rubber around inside trunk lid has deteriorated and could be replaced. There are two spots on the lower lip of the bonnet where it has rusted (see photos). The auto detailer touched it up with matching paint. However, no fiberglass was put in – in fact there is no fiberglass or Bondo anywhere in or on this car - really. Again, if you want to restore this car to show condition; this area of the hood would need attention. All of the bright work and chrome are in very good to excellent condition with the exception of the front bumper. There is some pitting and a couple of condition issues on the lower portion (see photos). I’ve been told this can be repaired and re-plated or simply replace the entire bumper if it’s that important to you. All of the glass is in very good to excellent condition. The outside antenna is in great condition and extends properly. ENGINE / MECHANICAL: The “Jet Rocket” 330 v8 runs excellent – no knocks, pings or any noises at all! Runs like a new engine and cruises at 70mph effortlessly - very stable on the road and rides nice. It does not burn any oil and there is no discoloration out the exhaust. Did I mention how powerful the engine is? It’s like a Rocket! (no pun intended) – And the rumble sound of the v8 exhaust is killer. The brakes are outstanding. In fact; they are the best drum brakes I’ve ever experienced – stops on a dime with no pulling to the left or right. The car handles very well and feels stable around corners, bumpy roads or at high speeds. Keep in mind this is relative to a 50 year old car and the handling is that of the era. Automatic transmission shifts smoothly and does not burn any fluid. However, each spring when I first take it out, there is a spot of red fluid on the garage floor. Once, I start driving it and the gaskets moisten up the issue goes away. Every exterior light operates and functions as it should. All of the gauges, speedometer, gas gauge, heater, defroster, interior lights, exterior lights, wipers, horn, radio, etc. work properly. The original AM radio plays loud and crystal clear. One of our favorite stations to listen to is broadcast out of Toronto, Canada and it comes in perfectly. And that’s in another country over 200 miles away! Although, the low mileage is evidenced based on the condition of the body, engine, brake pedal wear, etc. – I also called the dealership where it was purchased and traded in. The man I was transferred to knew the car and said that sounded about right. However, he would not offer up any other information to me. I called the dealership more than once trying to convince them to give me any documentation or service records for the car but, was routinely told it was against their policy. INTERIOR: The dash board is in good condition with no cracks or tears and is still soft and supple. The window pane in front of the speedometer and gauges is crystal clear and in excellent condition with no scratches or cracks. The chrome around the heater controls, radio and ashtray shows like new. The original carpeting is intact and in good condition. The vinyl seats and seat back are in great condition with the exception of the chocolate brown inserts. They have started cracking and separating from the vinyl. Since we like original, we repaired them just enough to retard any further separation. To bring the interior back to show condition, the chocolate colored inserts inside of the vinyl would need to be replaced. All four of the chocolate brown door panels are in good condition and show well. The cushion part of the arm rest on the drivers side has deteriorated and could use replacement. The headliner and moldings are in good condition; with the exception of the molding around inside rear window - it is brittle and deteriorating from the past moisture problem I spoke of earlier. Original seat belts intact and function properly. INCLUDED IN THE SALE: (2) Sets of original keys, spare tire, original jack, owner’s manual, original 1965 Oldsmobile sales brochure, a quality car cover, original whisk broom from the Georgia Factory for the Blind and repair receipts. NOTE: Clear New York State Registration for transfer of ownership - New York did not start issuing titles for proof of ownership until 1973. Why are we selling the car you ask? First of all; we love the car and it was a very difficult decision. However, we are down-sizing and recently purchased our retirement home. Since we’re going from a (4) car garage to a (2) car garage – it’s time for the Olds to find a new home. If I were not selling the car – what would I do to it? Absolutely Nothing! – “They’re only original once.” We have spent many evenings and weekends discovering new places along back country roads as well as many enjoyable long drives along the lake. We have great memories of driving it to the Adirondacks for vacation and she drove like a dream – very reliable and dependable. It gets lots of looks when driving down the road and if we stopped along the way, people would go crazy over the car. We took it to many car shows - once we entered it in the judging and it won best in class for original condition. Once you start cruising around in the Olds, a feeling comes over you like you just wandered back in time. It’s as if Mama Cass is going to jump out of the back seat at any moment and start singing “California Dreaming!” The Olds triggers your senses about the recollection of feelings, experiences and places that once brought a sense of excitement. It will make you want to adventure and explore again… and definitely puts a smile on your face.
