Vehicle Detail

Up on the auction block is a rare 1984 Volvo 244DL wagon with a Volkswagon D24 diesel engine. I absolutely loved this old girl but I’m moving in a few months and unfortunately she can’t come with me. First let me state, this vehicle has a soul unlike the shite manufactured today and I want nothing more to see her eating up the miles again. At 259,466 miles, she needs some attention all around but this is a great project car for 2 reasons. The body is rust free and anyone technically savvy can work on this rig. Because the diesel engine requires no spark and is mechanically injected, there is one 12 volt DC fuel on solenoid required for operation. The rest is all mechanical. The last time I drove her, I lost the injection pump belt. I have the replacement belt but have not had time nor garage space to install. I will supply the manuals/procedures to complete as well as the injection pump timing tool. I also have 6 German made Monarch injection nozzles to install. If you’re in the know with Mercedes and VW diesels, these are the best nozzles out there. I’m also including an injector nozzle shim kit, pop pressure tester so you can set your own desired opening pressure. I also have 5 glow plugs and 7 heat shields. What to expect Engine – The injection pump belt will need to be installed. The injection pump timing will need to be set. These 2 tasks are not going to be simple but if you’re mechanically inclined should be no problem. I would suggest replacing the glow plugs at this time. Engine should run strong following these repairs/upgrades. Electrical – The blower motor resistor that controls motor speed burnt up along with the motor. I replaced the motor and removed the resistor but did not have a replacement resistor at time. I have a new resistor that will need to be installed. The cruise control does not work. Rear windshield wiper does not work, wires are open at the tail gate hinge. Passenger front electric door lock does not work. Stereo does not work, have original stereo and wiring harness. Cab lighting may be intermittent. Mechanical – The front passenger door window does not roll down. Glove box hinges need rebuilt. Wheel bearings, drive shaft bearing, and rear axle bearings need to be replaced sooner than later. No power brakes, not sure if the brake booster needs to be replaced or what but she engine brakes nicely. Hood hinges need to be rebuilt. Front bumper is hanging on the driver side. Have all trim for front bumper to install. Deep scratch at passenger rear wheel well and driver side front wheel above bumper. .5” chip in windshield on driver side. Upgrades/Repairs Cold start thermostat never worked and impossible to find new so installed a push pull cable to manually advance timing and throttle position during cold starts. Timing belt is less than 40,000 miles old. Volvo 240 turbo hood (previous owner), installed turbo headlights and grill to fit hood. Have original (estate) headlights as well. Volvo virgo wheels with 20% tread yokohama’s and also have original steel wheels and tires. Rebuilt Laycock J type overdrive unit with new cone clutch, springs, gaskets, and o-rings. Rebuilt overdrive relay and solenoid. New thermostat, coolant flush, fuel filter, 5k mile oil and filter changes with Amsoil Synthetic 15W-40. New windshield wiper motor. Thule roof racks. there are plenty of other problems so as a disclaimer let me assure you there is most likely something wrong or not quite right with every component comprising this vehicle. That being said, the way she drives is one in a million, like a tank with that M46 transmission coupled to that rugged rough diesel; they just don’t make cars like this anymore. No reserve and hope someone has the garage space and time to get her back on the road. Winning bidder must pick up in Milwaukee. On Apr-02-15 at 18:23:13 PDT, seller added the following information: 4/2/2015 Description Update: Correction, I do not have all tooling required to complete the injection pump timing belt replacement. You'll need special tools 5199 and 5201. I was planning on fabricating my own. The vehicle has been repainted. The original color was a maroon Correction, In the description I suggested replacement of glow plugs; I meant to say "I would suggest replacing Injector Nozzles with new Heat Shields at this time." If a glow plug fails resistance test, it would be advantageous to replace at this time as well. Thanks
