Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is my 1970 Plymouth Road Runner 2 door hardtop. This is a real “RM” car and real “V” code car. It features the rare 440-6 barrel and is number matching Road Runner. That is correct - it has the original engine and transmission! All of the numbers match including engine block, transmission, core support, door sticker, dash VIN tag, fender tag and trunk lip. This is a real E87 “V” code Road Runner in excellent condition. It has EB5 blue fire metallic exterior, white bucket seat interior, and console automatic. It shows 107,710.2 miles on the odometer. This is 1 of 433, 1970 440+6 two door hardtop Road Runners produced. That works out to be less than 9 cars per state. It is definitely a rare car in its own right. This car draws crowds at every car show and cruise night I go to. I have won many awards through the years. The car is registered with Galen Govier in the Chrysler Registry. I completed a several year non rotisserie restoration between 2001 and 2004. Some of the work was done after 2004 like the transmission rebuild and the addition of the ‘sure grip” to the 8 ¾ “rear end. This car is not a trailer queen show car, but it is in excellent condition- cosmetically and mechanically. It is a very high end driver that I show. The car is stored and covered in my basement garage/work shop. As I was restoring the car, I removed the right side bucket seat back to find a broadcast sheet. I was excited as I know these add value to the car. Upon careful examination, I found this to be for a 1970 convertible Road Runner 440 six barrel, plum crazy purple, white bucket seat interior car. I later found out that at the St. Louis assembly plant, many broadcast sheets found their way into the incorrect car. That is evidently what happened here. I have this broadcast sheet on file with Galen Govier. He has a color copy of the broadcast sheet. I still have the original that will be included with the sale of the car. Galen never located the correct broadcast sheet for my Road Runner. Since owning this car I have replaced or restored the following (this is not an inclusive list, but will give you some indication of the work done and money invested): Replaced both quarter panels Rebuilt both window corners Replaced the rear cross member behind the rear bumper Installed partial front floor pans (small patches) Replaced trunk pan Replaced trunk mat Completely stripped and painted car with factory EB5 “blue fire metallic” (base coat/clear coat) BF Goodrich tires Rallye wheels New chrome wheel bands Installed KYB shock absorbers Replaced leaf spring rubber bushings Replaced front windshield Replaced body decals (traverse stripe, both Road Runners and both 440+6) Replaced Road Runner side emblems Replaced under hood decals/emblems Replaced Pentastar emblem Rechromed front and rear bumpers Replaced front bumper rubber Replaced exhaust tips Replaced exhaust tip hangers Replaced door handles (inside and outside) Replaced door rubber Replaced side mirrors Replaced antenna Replaced rocker panel moldings Replaced wheel opening moldings Replaced white bucket seat interior Replaced door panels Replaced glove box insert Replaced inside chrome door handle bases Replaced the dash pad Added tic-toc-tach (all works/tach not wired now due to Pertronix conversion) Replaced package tray Replaced seat divider and jute pad Replaced carpet Replaced chrome door scuff panels Installed hidden car stereo Rebuilt the engine back to stock specifications (new everything) @ 105,117.8 miles Installed Flowcooler aluminum water pump Rebuilt transmission Added new “sure grip” to the 3.23:1 gears Rebuilt all 3 original carburetors Installed ceramic coated Hooker headers Installed aluminized dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers Replaced factory starter with small high torque (Mopar Performance) starter Rebuilt alternator Rebuilt steering gear Replaced voltage regulator Restored windshield wiper Replaced factory coil Converted factory dual points distributor to Pertronix electronic ignition (2011) Replaced fan shroud Cleaned, flushed and painted the factory radiator Restored the “beep beep” horn Replaced window washer motor Replaced window washer tank Rebuilt/restored master cylinder Replaced brake lines from front to rear Replaced emergency brake cables Replaced fuel lines Replaced gas tank Replaced worn front end components Restored the grill to factory specifications Replaced front head light bulbs Replaced battery box Installed group 27 red cap sealed battery I have a neatly kept book of receipts for the restoration parts, labor, and anything related to the restoration process. This book will be included with the car purchase. There are several hard to find extras that will come with the sale of this car. They are a part of the history of the Road Runner. I have collected an original 1970 Belvedere sales brochure, 1970 Rapid Transit brochure, 1970 Superbird brochure, several Plymouth magazine ads from the correct 1970 time period and two 1970 magazines (Hot Rod and Hot Rodding) that have articles covering the new 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. I will also include an original 1970 Plymouth Chilton’s service/repair manual. The car originally came with a full white vinyl top. I have a new white vinyl top and the chrome sail panel chrome strips that will go with the sale. I have the original starter that I will let go with the sale as well. I bought this car in Alabama and it did not come with a title. Years ago in the Southeast, I think after a car reached 20 years old, you were not required to pass the title along with the sale. All that was required was a “bill of sale”, and that is what evidently happened here. I have tried to obtain a title from the State of Georgia, but they tell me once the title chain is broken they will not issue a title. I have the original notarized “bill of sale” when I purchased the car in July of 2000. The bill of sale will go with the sale of the car. I will fill out a new “bill of sale” for the new owner and I will sign the tag receipt/registration over to the new owner. This should be all you need to complete the transaction and for vehicle registration. I have been involved with Mopars for over 35 years. I have kept up with values and what these cars are bringing. After some careful consideration, I have decided to price the Road Runner at what I think is fair for the condition of the car and for where I think the market is currently. I feel the car’s condition is between average and high, but closer to the high end. I will set a reasonable reserve to protect my investment and let the market be the judge. The first real and fair offer will buy the car. Please, no low ball offers! Just to be fair, I need to let everyone know my Road Runner is now for sale locally as well as listed on Ebay. This vehicle will be removed from the Ebay listing if it sells locally. If there are bids and the car sells locally, I will cancel all bids and end the auction. This Road Runner is sold “as is, where is with no warranties expressed or implied.” The NADA list the following: 1970 Road Runner 440 six barrel, 2 door hardtop Low retail $22,300 Average retail $51,000 High retail $68,800 Feel free to see for yourself at the NADA web site below. http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1970/Plymouth/Road-Runner/2-Door-Hardtop-440-3x2/Values These are the options from the fender tag and associated cost back then.
