Vehicle Detail

For sale by owner, 1994 Volvo 940 Turbo Wagon 177,500 miles. Clean title in hand. Just inspected this past 12/14, so you have nearly a year before next due, (in VA). Car passed it with flying colors. There is allot to this nice, interesting old Volvo. Please read all of the below, if it's for you and you need more info, call or text (434)645-2007 . I am very honest, and am a open book, I love this car and will try to answer any question you may have. Here are some preliminary photos. If it does not sell by the weekend, I will have many more photos and more details. Ask me anything. Sorry for the numerous caps below, not yelling -- just emphasis instead of bold letters. Good glass all the way around, comfortable, interior is pretty nice, aged with a few cracks and wear from 177k and 18 years of age. Dash is nice, no cracks. Has many minor cosmetics issues. Car looks nice in person. UP CLOSE COSMETIC FLAWS: --Cherry size dent on pass side top fender edge (minor). -- Peeling clear coat, on hood and roof, original paint. -- DRIVER's SEAT, aged, one small hole, has not grown in years. It's OVERALL very nice and comfortable. this is a TURBO model, so driver's side is POWER six WAY. --- NUMEROUS interior flaws (CALL ME FOR MORE INFO), though more photo's are coming this weekend. -- the interior of this car is COMFORTABLE. More so than any Buick or Cadillac. Extra Options: ALLOY RIMS, CRUISE CONTROL, POWER DRIVER's SEAT, and POWER TILT / SLIDE SUNROOF. PERSONAL SERVICE / UPGRADE HISTORY Purchased 6/2010 --116,500 miles -- New Lift Gate Shocks -- 8/ 2010 Coolant flush with Zerex green -- MPG check … 25.77 mpg mixed driving -- 119,650 miles NEW Vented, cross-drilled Brake rotors, with semi metallic pads .. all 4 wheels -- I could tell the difference! -- 120,000 miles, fresh tires, with 4 wheel alignment, NEW NGK plugs, NEW Volvo Intercooler hose, NEW Fuel filter -- 6/15/11 -- ALL NEW BELTS, kevlar, TOP COG premium. AC/ALT/PS/WATER. A/C system charge up -- NEW 5000 kelvin HID, High / Low Beam dual ballast 35 watt light system Phenominally bright! (see photos) -- AMSOIL 10w40 oil change, routine, added MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG. @125,600 miles -- (oil regularly changed since then (about every 3000-5000 miles) with fully synthetic Rotella T, 10w40, and German made MANN filters and -- 133,511 added ANOTHER HID lighting system (the first was so geat) this time in the factory FOGLIGHT housing). The brightest real EURO SPEC GLASS HEADLIGHTS you'll ever see!! These are 2-3 times brighter all together than even a new LEXUS or BMW can deliver, but still don't blind other drivers! Also about this time, took it to Paul's Volvo. They did about $900 in labor, cleaning throttle body, new PCV system, and a new intercooler hose. -- CREE LED Brake / Backup lights! -- SMD 3 watt interior dome lights (really bright) -- 3/8/2012 @ 133, 991 miles --- FULL TUNEUP with IPD kit, NGK plugs, DIST CAP & BUTTON / ROTOR and BOUGICORD WIRES! , new THERMOSTAT HOUSING and Thermostat (prev. maintenance sake), NEW OXYGEN SENSOR. --- NOW for the real upgrades!! @ 135,000 miles: -- New IPD Performance (normal ride level) SPRINGS, FRONT . -- NEW IPD REAR HD springs REAR. -- New Koni type (from a repected mfr in Lithuania) front struts, new quality bushings & strut bearings etc. --- NEW MONROE adjustable load AIR - REAR SHOCKS with fitting, so you can tune the ride and carry lots of weight without sagging. --- NEW FRONT & BACK Blue IPD (famous oversized type, google them) SWAY BARS, with POLYURETHANE BUSHINGS. EXTRAS if you want… -- heavy duty rail mount Roof Rack, quick release style. ( IN PHOTO but NOT INCLUDED. I WILL KEEP these unless buyer wants for for something extra) -- ADDED a BLUETOOTH / IPOD / IPHONE 4 compatible media center, DUAL BRAND, very nice. IF YOU DON"T want, I will deduct -- or add + $40. The above work, parts and labor cost around $1800 above. All of these parts have fewer than 5k miles on them, car rides firm but not stiff. And handles flat, like your Dream Volvo wagon could!! (Much like a rally car) Not "cheating" like a lowered import would be. This car handles AND has real ground clearance. 7/1/12: @ 139,400 New Timing Belt (Continental Conti-Belt), new timing cover, cam seal, and engine re-timed. 9/15/12 @ 143,500 New Alternator bracket bolt, upgraded with IPD urethane bushings. 10/20/12 New Autocraft GOLD, sealed cell battery, with max CCA and a 3 year replacement warranty (as of this year 2/2015, there is stil almost a year of warranty left, and I had it tested, it's doing fine. also replaced new vapor lines to fuel cannister. 11/20/12 146,500 New Bosch water pump, Spectra radiator (preemptively replaced to avoid any type of failure), new upper, lower and overflow radiator hoses, and a new OEM Volvo coolant tank and overflow, changed out because the old one looked dirty. -- New radiator fan electric relay (OEM from Germany) replaced at same time as radiator -- Transmission Drain and refill with full Synthetic Valvoline MaxLife 12/1/12 148,000 Another transmission Drain and refill with synthetic MaxLife 12/12 148,000 -- Installed new lower control arms with specially fitted IPD urethane bushings. And, had front end aligned. 11/13 163,100 Transmission Overdrive solenoid replaced because it was leaking. 3 (new) Stainless Steel, braided brake lines, and a full brake fluid flush with European DOT 4 fluid. 11/13 New Akebono ceramic pads, all the way around, because I wanted better brake feel than the semi-metalics, (which still had plenty of life, because I drive like a Granny). The Akebono pads had better stopping power too. 11/13 -- The Bosch waterpump I installed many miles ago turned out to be subpar, so I replaced with a top quality, Haepu (made in Germany) water pump -- which is tight and runs much smoother. 3/30/14 New NGK Iridium spark plugs and fresh premium silicone plug wires. Also, a brand new OEM Volvo PVC breather box, with fresh O ring. 12/14 168,000 Brand new set of the best tires, Continetal DWS (all season, winter, handling tire, made in Germany with special polymide compounds) mounted to a vintage set of Volvo's OEM 16" sport wheels, which are quite scarce, and hard to find. The tires handle well and have amazing winter grip, and they are quiet. HISTORY: --- I am the 3rd owner. All previous owners NON-SMOKERS. Car has a pretty solid history. Owner 1, was a perfect Volvo person. Dealer service all the way. I have some of the original records. Owner 2 used as a work vehicle, had kids, but was OK about upkeep. Some dings and and broken plastic minor parts as result. 3rd owner (me) -- non smoker, I like a car that handles, but I drive like an old lady (adult). I never dip into the Turbo more than half way! NON SMOKER, NO TOWING. -- Engine, transmission, interior, paint ALL ORIGINAL. (many, many, many cosmetic flaws -- not a car for the perfectionist in you) -- The engine & turbo are STRONG originals. The Head is a rebuilt one, due to an event with 2nd owner, who spent big bucks for a head gasket, and timing belt service @ 100k. PROBLEMS or UPCOMING CARE: [edit] Some of these re out of date, since all of this was written 2 years ago....since then this car has continued to amaze and delight me with it's reliability (2/15) -- Has a very tiny, tiny oil leak somwwhere, which loses about 1qt of OIL per 1000 miles. Always has, normal I hear for an older Turbo 4cyl Volvo of this mileage. -- Timing Belt, though it was done @ 140k, will be due again soon enough -- easy on these cars (1hr for any moderately skilled person) because it's right in front…far , far easier than other cares -- no special tools, and I had all of the old plastic parts and water pump has already been done. --- A/C is ICE COLD, but it's winter and I ahave not had it one. Tight system, no leaks that I know about -- Volvo's don't have the best AC, but this one has always been more than adequate. However, a quik to know... the switch panel is sometimes persnickety, and requires a tap to get the A/C to turn on...you can replace the switch panel, with the replacement I can include if need be. --- New as of 2014 -- needs a tune up, probably has a leaky fuel injector, o ring, which if i's been sitting, will rough idle for about 1 min exactly, and then completely go away... this has caused around town gas mpg to drop, to about 19-20mpg, winter driving. -- GAS GUAGE is intermittent, the SENDING UNIT is FINE. It's only a cold solder joint / connector. 1hr repair, directions on Google. I use the odometer, so have not to date bothered. -- If you brake really hard, there is a slight pulse, possibly a slightly warped rotor, or a needed pad shim,, very minor, needs no attention. -- in the next year, before inspection, you may want to replace (1) aging drivers side tie rod. -- In conclusion, this Volvo, like all other's has it's quirks and is in need of some catch up maintnence. I think, mine is a very good deal, as many of these IPD upgrades were expensive, not to mention all of the labor to install. This car now has 177,500 -- it's very reliable, and I would feel confident driving it to California on a lark, expecting to only put gas and maybe a little oil in it. Some of these photos (included the ones showing the white roof racks) are dated. I will be posting new ones as soon as possible. The car has not changed at all in appearance. The paint is rough, but very nice on the sides. --------------------------------This mini-essay below, contains general comments and pointers about any Volvo of this era ---- particularly the latest and greatest 940. Many of these comments over also apply to the older 740,, but in general not the even older 240 which I don't recommend nearly as much. No matter what, as a first car to learn ownership and maintenance for a new driver---- one could hardly recommend a better choice than a real wheel drive a Volvo station wagon from the 80s or 90s. It was in fact a favorite recommendation of the late and great NPR CarTalk show. Volvos are practical, safe, and actually pretty fun to drive! (especially with some of the upgrades that I made to mine.) Back in 2010 when I purchased this car I was well aware and fully educated of what I was getting into and I must say that this car met and exceeded all of my expectations. Volvos are not "low maintenance", but they are easy to keep on the road, and to quote a Volvo expert "run poorly, longer than most other cars run at all". I would say this Volvo has been more reliable than the many Japanese cars I have owned.---------------------------------- All my life I have loved this style of Volvo wagon. This has been a great car, and continue's to be -- only with a heavy heart do I list it for sale ( I WILL regret this I am sure) . No particular reason, save for the fact I have decided I need a minivand for a modern child seat, and to save me time from needed routine maintenance (newer cars have wider maintenance schedules). With minor, driveway tune-ups and car, the Volvo 740 / 940 series are known to last in upwards of 300-400k miles. They are on of the most versatile, safest and durable / reliable cars ever designed. -- I am not kidding when I say these cars become a labor of love combined with unbeatable daily practical driving. They are really RARE to find fixed up like this! Read below to see all of the upgrades! I carry antiques sometimes and wanted the perfect stuff hauler that handles -- this car really delivers that promise. And this is a 1994 model -- it carries all of the twilight revisions that Volvo made to improve the already bulletproof series! Veteran Volvo fanatics know that the 740 / 940 series was really just a modernization of the incredible 240 series. Fixing innumerable insignificant shortcomings and culminating in 940 series perfection. Here are a few pointers about modern classic Volvo's (many more can be found via google). --- The "Last of the real Volvo's" were all RWD and the good ones are all 4cyl. The 5cyl engine is not really as neat, or as fun to work on. The 5cyl engines are interference designs, the 4cyl are not. Furthermore, the 960 6cyl (the Porsche designed "sewing machine" -- is not worth the trouble)! The 850 series lasted into Ford Motor company ownership. FWD Volvo's are NOT as bulletproof or as COOL!! --- If you have loved or owned a 740 or 240, RWD, 2wd Volvo car or wagon … this 1994-95 era 940, is the end of an era and the best-of-the-best. Wagon's are tough to find. Turbo Wagon's are really hard to find. Turbo Wagon's with reasonable low miles are like hen's teeth! --- Few Volvo nuts' know this safety freak factoid: The 1994-95 Vovlo 940 was the first & last to have the ALL MECHANICAL SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION. An ingenuous mechanical solution I feel could really save your bacon in a side impact. That was one little reason I searched far and wide for this model. In a wreck, the middle console, drink holder actually folds inward via rods that run under the seat! The modern cars only have air bags to protect. Just my IMHO, though I feel it's a VERY unique system -- an always made me feel allot better to have in an older car! This 1994 940 also features DRIVERS & PASS airbags. Volvo's were always way ahead with true safety innovation. They are also built very sturdily like a fortress with lot's of crush space! YOu can check of on this one -- as it may be mere myth… the Volvo 740 / 940 series did not have a driver- side death behind the wheel for a 10 year stretch --- this seems very hard to believe -- keep in mind this was the 80s/90s -- so before SUV's took over the road!! --- If you are a DiY upkeep car lover, and lust for the last of the simple, easy to work on cars … this is your baby … easiest in the easily hundred car's I have personally owne. TONS of room under the hood. Chang the oil, flush the tranny with ONE hose and a bucket .. that's ALL. -- the Turbo 940 *CAN* be VERY FAST. , not necessarily so in stock tune … (just 0-60 in 8 @ the meager 7psi stock). EASY to TWEAK for higher PSI --- then it would be SCARY FAST 0-60, with few (if any) upgrades. I drive slow & in the country, so STOCK is OK for me -- that's for the new owner to play with. --- So many modern cars have weak transmissions!! Not these classic Volvo's!! Sweden did not produce a good automatic -- so Volvo outsourced the best in the market… the TOYOT-AISN AW40 … a bus / van / truck transmission …. they last for ever .. they shift hard like the truck tranny they are !! Really, really strong. Usually outlast the cars .. even with normal care… 400k if you don't tow (this car did not tow). Knowing all of the above, after many hours of research .. I went looking. It took me 2 years to find this car… it was not perfect, but was the lowest mileage I've seen to date … 116,500 miles at the time of purchase -- a real rare bird. Not cosmetically perfect, but at that point I was not picky! --- The minute I got this car -- I started on a relentless upgrade path .. there are so many via IPD…. I have records and receipts for almost everything too. I have only put on (at time of writing this 22,500 miles in the 2.5 years of ownership I've had it (2nd car). Here is a brief synopsis of the upkeep & upgrading I did:I am omitting oil changes, I have been using SYNTHETIC AMSOIL / or MOBIL 1, later switching to ROTELLA T, 10w40 with MANN (german) filters and changing every 3-4k miles.
