This car was completely frame-off restored about 15 years ago and stored inside since. It has about 5k miles on the rebuilt, upgraded and more powerful 1973 (“AK” VIN 48 bhp DIN, 46 hp SAE-net) 1600cc dual intake port engine (rebuilt by Don's Volkstech in Burlington, NJ). The shop was run for years by Don Reinhardt, known for having one of the best VW shops in the area. At time of rebuild, the car had all the rust repaired, a new interior, new top (the top alone cost $3,000), new wiring harness, etc. The electrical system has been upgraded from a 6 volt system to a more reliable and safe 12 volt system. Oil Temp, Voltage and Oil Pressure gages added for increased reliability and safety. It has been painted a “mod-period” Metallic Amethyst, that is striking. A full spray can of custom matched touch up paint is included. Everything that was worn was replaced with new, such as the brakes, shocks, torsion tubes, and brand new Remington Hi-Max II radial tires (still have the new “nibs” on the sidewall!). The front seats have been upgraded with safer, more comfortable 1973 Karmann-Ghia seats. It is sitting on a rust free, fully undercoated, never patched IRS pan from California. Recent improvements include: New voltage regulator, new distributor cap, new window cranks, original generator has been properly polarized and charges at 14 volts, new carpets, new spare tire, new 1967 correct wood grain dashboard with restored and locking original glove box (that is even lit!), new MP3/I-Pod ready am-fm, 50w/channel radio and dual voice coil dash (original style) speaker from Woody’s Custom Sound, all new body side moldings, new carburetor, new heavy duty battery, full tune up, new door cards and handles, rear floor heater vents repaired, front dash heater vents repaired. Original clock works and keeps correct time, windshield washer with the unique spare tire valve repaired and works, and the wiper motor has both high and low speed, and parks the blades in the correct position on the windscreen. All gauges and lighting is operational and functioning as it did from the factory. Bumpers are brand new stainless steel (14/10), including the bumperettes and the towel racks. Stainless steel bumpers will never tarnish, dull or corrode/rust, even if scratched or nicked. Brand new convertible top boot in contrasting Saddle Tan. Brand new turn signal lever assembly. A 1/18 scale diecast model is included, as well as an official VW shop manual, and history book of the Karmann-Ghia.
