Vehicle Detail

Offered for sale a rare 1987 MB 560SL with both tops! This car has most if not all the options available for this model. New MSRP around $60000. This is a rescue vehicle. I purchased it 22 months ago with ideas of returning it to former glory. The car was basically intact and running but in very poor overall condition. I paid $2650 for it after having my local MB mechanic check it out. He said the motor is strong so I felt safe trying to fix it up. I drove it straight to his shop where they kept it for about 3 weeks. My goal was to get it road-worthy. I have spent roughly $10000 on it since purchase. A full list of repairs may be obtained. Here are the main things done less than 2 years ago I can remember...new OEM soft top installed last spring...new exhaust...new tires...new Billstein shocks...new belts and hoses...rebuilt gearbox...all fluid lines drained and flushed...much much more. Condition exterior...complete with damage...left front accessory light lens broken...slight body damage to right front fender and door...looks like it was rubbed hard enough to cause dents...needs paint...8-10" crack in windshield 3-4" crack in hardtop rear glass...and lots of nicks and bruises but from a few feet away it still looks like the beauty it is...I have spent hours cleaning on this car because I love it. Condition Interior...nearly complete with damage...Original dash has cracks(there is an inexpensive cover that could be re-installed. Front seats arm rest sun visors boot lid cover all need replaced but have covered temporarily with duct tape that matches? the middle red interior. The back seat is perfect with one seat belt strap missing...yes I said back seat. I believe it was a $400 option but you can legally put 4 people in this car....the 2 in the front can be full size adults but the back seat could hold 2 kids or flexible smaller adults(trophy wives?). A couple of trim pieces are off but present. I put an Alpine after-market radio in but I still have the Becker. I couldn't get it to work. Carpets ok but could be replaced. Glove box locks. Condition engine compartment...complete and in working order...hood release etc...clean clean clean. Condition trunk...complete and huge...lots of room in it...trunk lock works too...needs carpets replaced..spare wheel matches the 4 on the ground which appear to be original and in good condition...flat tire on spare...no tool kit and only some of the owner's manual stuff but I am not an expert...new battery 2 months ago and oil changed also. Known issues...odometer not working...no one knows when it quit...AC blows but not cold...left side instrument panel light is out...passenger side mirror switch handle missing...small leak rear main seal...small leak power steering...I keep a close eye on levels and on garage floor... Known quirks...this car is not for a tall person...I am 5'10" and it is perfect. If you are over 6 ft drive with the top down or the soft top up. If you have very long legs good luck...the hard top weighs 100 lbs and you need 2 people to put it on and off. I would only put it on to store but it looks great on and is quieter. The soft top is easy to manage but you need to learn the steps...takes about 5 minutes or less to learn and about 2 minutes once you learn. This car needs premium gas (93 octane). It wil run on anything but fuel economy drops way down which FYI is about 20MPG if you cruise. Do not buy this car to save on gas. General condition...this car looks good but up close it needs a ton of cosmetics. I spent my money on road-worthiness and driveability. I would be comfortable driving this car anywhere because I know everything has been fixed or checked on it. It has never broken down on me. History of 560SL...briefly...the R107 body style was made from 1971-1989. The 560SL was made from 1986-1989. This is a 5.6 liter V-8 and the car weighs a lot. It is the best engine MB made to move this body style. 279HP so it move. I am 60 so guess how much fun I had last summer when a black on black 12-cyl. Viper pulled up to the red light. He won but he knew I was there. Of course I backed off in about .5 seconds as he left me in a cloud of dust...my point is it was a race. Whoever buys this car will already or learn to appreciate that it is at once a work of art...a sports car...a luxury car...a classic premium collector car...ultimate MB reliability and engineering...coupe...convertible...hobby...fun. The best way to recognize it as a 1987 is the larger squarish 3rd taillight near the front edge of the trunk lid I turned 60 this year so guess how much fun I had last summer when a black on black 12 cylinder Dodge Viper pulled up to the red light. We revved our engines...the light changed and we both took off.
